Mercaston

Ravensdale Park is a civil parish in the Derbyshire Dales district of Derbyshire roughly 3 miles (5 km) WSW of Belper, Derbyshire, England, midway between Turnditch and Brailsford. The population of the civil parish as taken at the 2011 Census was less than 100. Details are included in the South Derbyshire civil parish of Dalbury Lees. It originated as one of the seven royal parks within Duffield Frith. In time it was the location of the chief hunting lodge for the Frith, and there are frequent entries in the records of the Duchy of Lancaster referring to it. John of Gaunt visited frequently. Parts of the former deer park are designated as a scheduled monument.

Mercaston Hall is a 16th-century timber framed farmhouse within the hamlet of Mercaston, near the market town of Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.The Kniveton family owned Mercaston from the 14th century. They were Kniveton Baronets from 1611 and several members of the family served as High Sheriff of Derbyshire. The present modest structure, altered in the 19th century, is thought to occupy the site of a former larger property. The present owners offer bed and breakfast accommodation.

Brailsford (52°58′16″N 1°37′26″W) is a small red-brick village and civil parish in Derbyshire on the A52 midway between Derby and Ashbourne. The parish also includes Brailsford Green. The civil parish population at the 2011 Census was 1,118. The village has a pub, a golf club, a post office and a school. There are many fine houses in the district including two 20th-century country houses: Brailsford Hall built in 1905 in Jacobean style, and Culland Hall.

Weston Underwood is an agricultural village and civil parish in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire. The population of the Civil Parish (comprising the Villages of Weston Underwood, Muggington and Muggington Lane End) as taken at the 2011 Census was 374. It is just over five miles (8 km) from Derby. Nearby places are Mugginton, Kedleston Hall and Carsington Water.

Cross o' th' Hands is a small area of settlement in Derbyshire, England, 10 miles (16 km) north-west of Derby on the A517 road between Hulland and Turnditch. The settlement is named after its original public house, near a gravel pit used for staging bare-knuckle fist fights, which was probably itself named after the sport.Despite the settlement's small size, it is well connected via public transport, served by two Arriva buses: the 109 and the Swift service between Derby and Ashbourne.Cross o' th' Hands' single through road, Intakes Lane, joins the A517 at the top of the hill, becoming Hillcliff Lane and joining up with the B5023 Wirksworth Road. The top of Hillcliff Lane has views across the open greenlands of Amber Valley.

Hulland Ward is a village and civil parish in the Derbyshire Dales district of Derbyshire roughly 6 miles west of Belper, Derbyshire England on the A517 road. The parish includes the hamlets of Biggin, Nether Biggin and Millington Green. Hulland Ward itself contains about 400 houses and has a population of just under 1000 inhabitants, being measured at 927 (and including Mercaston) in the 2011 Census.It is distinct from Hulland, the next village and civil parish immediately to its west. Originally, the village consisted of a few dwellings on the coaching road into the Duffield Frith, with the road being gated. This was known as Ward Gate and over the years, due to its proximity to Hulland Village was known as Hulland Wardgate. Sometime in the 17th century, the gate part was dropped, and the hamlet grew into the village now known as Hulland Ward. In the Domesday Survey Hulland Village is listed as Hoilant in the care of Geoffrey d'Alselin. It was part of the lands bestowed upon Henry de Ferrers after the Norman Conquest, and also became part of Duffield Frith, with two enclosed royal parks - Mansell Park and Ravensdale Park. The latter is now a civil parish in its own right.One of the earliest ore-stamping mills was built at Hulland Ward by Burchard Kranich in 1556.

Ednaston Manor is a country house in Ednaston, near Brailsford, Derbyshire, England. It was built in 1912–19 in a Queen Anne style by Edwin Lutyens, for William G. Player. It is a Grade I listed building. It was bought by free newspaper pioneer and former Derby County chairman Lionel Pickering in 1979. He improved the extensive gardens, which were open to the public during the summer, then sold the house to a local businessman shortly before his death in 2006.

Hulland is a village and civil parish in the Derbyshire Dales district of Derbyshire, England, adjoining the A517 road. It had a population of 215 according to the 2011 census. In the 1870s Hulland was described as: "Hulland, a village and two townships in Ashborne parish, and a chapelry partly also in Wirksworth parish, Derby. The village stands on an eminence, 5 miles E by N of Ashborne r. station; and has pleasant environs" Hulland should be distinguished from Hulland Ward, an adjacent village and civil parish immediately to its east.

Turnditch is a village and civil parish in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 Census was 301. It is around 10 miles (16 km) north of Derby on the A517 road from Belper to Ashbourne. It is built on both sides of the road halfway up the steep climb out of the Ecclesbourne Valley. Nearer to the brow of the hill is a place known as Cross o' th' Hands. In Norman times it was within Duffield Frith and part of the manor of Duffield. The Church of All Saints was built in the 13th century as a chapel of ease to Duffield, while a Congregational chapel with a Sunday school was erected in 1818.
