Washington Heights is a Roanoke, Virginia neighborhood located in northwest Roanoke, bound to the west by Virginia State Route 117. It borders the neighborhoods of Peachtree/Norwood on the west, South Washington Heights on the south, Villa Heights on the east and Westview Terrace on the north. The neighborhood sees both a mix of residential development throughout its area spanning a more traditional grid street network in addition to more typical suburban ranch style construction.

WAWX is licensed to Lynchburg, Virginia, serving the Lynchburg metropolitan area. WLRX plays a Contemporary Christian radio format from the "K-Love" national network, while WAWX airs a Contemporary Worship format as a network affiliate of "Air1."Both stations are licensed for commercial operation. But K-Love and Air1 are listener-supported and run no commercials. In addition, EMF owns 106.9 WLGX in nearby Bedford, Virginia. WLGX also carries K-Love programming.

It borders the neighborhoods of Peachtree/Norwood on the west, Villa Heights and Washington Heights on the south and Miller Court/Arrowood on the north and east. The neighborhood is predominantly residential in character throughout its area with limited commercial development along its Virginia State Route 117 (Peters Creek Road) frontage. Its development patterns typical of those experienced for an American city during the mid-20th century with low-density housing.

The Villa Heights house, also known as the Compton–Bateman House, is a historic house in Roanoke, Virginia, USA. Built in 1820, it was originally the home of Elijah McClanahan, a lieutenant-colonel in the War of 1812. It has been substantially renovated and restored over the years, including after a 2011 fire, and it is the namesake of the neighborhood of Villa Heights, Roanoke, Virginia. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018, and as of 2023 houses assorted non-profit groups.

William Fleming High School is a public school, one of the only two public high schools in the Roanoke City area school division, the other being the Patrick Henry High School. The English Gardens Apartments is a historic complex of apartment buildings located in Roanoke, Virginia. The complex was designed by the Richmond-based architect E. Tucker Carlton, and was built in two phases. The first, completed in 1947, consists of nine building of three stories each, while the second, finished in 1950, consists of eight buildings of two stories each. The complex was designed in the Colonial Revival style, and all buildings are constructed of concrete blocks fronted with brick. The English Gardens was designed as a garden apartment complex, arranged to create courtyards between the buildings in order to maximize green space and ventilation. The Federal Housing Administration provided financing for the project, which was aimed primarily at middle-class World War II veterans and their families. The complex was listed to the National Register of Historic Places in 2022, and as of 2023 was in the process of reopening after a renovation.

Salem Veteran Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) is a VA hospital located in Salem, Virginia. Health care services are provided to veterans living in a 26-county area of southwestern Virginia. In addition to the main facility in Salem, there are affiliated services in three community-based outpatient clinics. These clinics are located in Danville, Virginia, Lynchburg, Virginia, Tazewell, Virginia, Wytheville, Virginia, and Staunton, Virginia.

Lakeside Amusement Park was an amusement park located in Salem, Virginia, neighboring Roanoke, at the intersection of U.S. Route 460 (East Main Street in Salem) and State Route 419 (Electric Road in Salem). The park was named after a very large (300 feet long, 125 feet wide) swimming pool which was opened on the site in 1920. The pool was surrounded by a beach and quickly became a favorite summer retreat for residents of Roanoke and Salem. Amusement park rides were added to the facility within a few years of its opening. The park also included a pavilion, which hosted celebrity concerts. Frequent performers included country artists Tom T. Hall and Conway Twitty. Nearby Roanoke College also had use of the park when it was closed in the winter as an area for its men's lacrosse team to use for practice.
