Belmont Methodist-Episcopal Church is a historic church building, located in the Belmont neighborhood of Roanoke, Virginia. It was built as a Methodist Episcopal church between 1917 and 1921, and is a three-story, brick, late Gothic Revival-style church. It features a tall bell tower, complex roof form, steeply-pitched gables and parapets, large pointed arch windows, crenellated corner towers, buttresses, cast-concrete quatrefoils, and other detailing. Capacity within sight and hearing of the pulpit is 1,000, as the original auditorium (seats 440) was enlarged with an adjoining parlor (75), an adult assembly room (260), and a gallery (225).In a notice from 1917, H. L. Cain is named the architect of the church building, and the cost of the building was initially budgeted at $50,000.00.The building was sold in 2003 to the Metropolitan Community Church of the Blue Ridge, who used it as their sanctuary; that church has since vacated the building. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 2011. Since 2019, it has also been a contributing structure to the NRHP-listed Belmont Historic District.

The Belmont Historic District is located in the southeast section of Roanoke, Virginia, US. It consists of an irregularly-shaped 214 acres (87 ha) of primarily residential housing located to the east of the city's downtown and south of the Roanoke Shops. The district's history coincides largely with that of Roanoke City's industry. Its original housing served the employees of the recently arrived Norfolk and Western Railway beginning in 1888. Later development in the district was built to provide housing for workers at the American Viscose Plant after that mill opened in 1917. The district includes a wide range of architectural styles among its 809 contributing structures. Located within the district are three buildings previously listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the district itself was listed to the Register in 2019.

H. L. Lawson & Son Warehouse is a historic warehouse building located at Roanoke, Virginia. It was built in 1925, and is a four-story, utilitarian brick building. The banked site allowed for the unloading of freight from railcars directly into the third story of the warehouse. It was built by Harry Leland Lawson, a key figure in Roanoke's business community from the late 1910s to the 1940s.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 2008. Since 2019, it has also been a contributing structure to the NRHP-listed Belmont Historic District.

The Roanoke Valley ( ROH-ə-nohk) in southwest Virginia is an area adjacent to and including the Roanoke River between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and the Appalachian Plateau to the west. The valley includes much of Roanoke County, as well as the two independent cities of Roanoke and Salem.

Roanoke City Firehouse No. 6 is a historic fire station located in the Belmont neighborhood of Roanoke, Virginia. It was built in 1911, and is a two-story, three-bay, hipped-roof building. in an effort to blend the station into its residential surroundings, it was constructed to resemble an early-20th century American Foursquare dwelling embellished with Classical Revival details. A wide center bay and two large double doors distinguish it from the homes in the neighborhood. The station was one of three with the same design that were built by architect Homer M. Miller and all put into service on the same day in September of 1911. As of 2023, one of the other two stations survives and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011 as City of Roanoke Fire Station No. 5. The three stations were the first in Roanoke to be built for and equipped with motorized firefighting equipment. They were integrated into the neighborhoods they were built to serve, limiting their need to travel farther than 1.5 miles (2.4 km) in response to a call.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. After ceasing operation as a firehouse in 1979, the building was converted to use as a community center, and later as a satellite police station.

The Roanoke Shops (also called the East End Shops) is a railroad workshop and maintenance facility in Roanoke, Virginia. Between 1884 and 1953, the shops produced 447 steam locomotives, all for the Norfolk and Western Railway (N&W). The Roanoke Shops build the N&W's famous Big Three class steam locomotives; the 4-8-4 class J, the 2-6-6-4 class A, and the 2-8-8-2 class Y6. In late 1953, the Shops built their final steam locomotive, making it last standard gauge steam locomotive built for revenue service in the United States. In 2020, N&W's successor, Norfolk Southern abandoned the Shops and Genesis Rail Services acquired the property in July 2023.

The Taubman Museum of Art, formerly the Art Museum of Western Virginia, is an art museum in downtown Roanoke, Virginia, United States. It was designed by architect Randall Stout.

The O. Winston Link Museum is a museum dedicated to the photography of O. Winston Link, the 20th-century railroad photographer widely considered the master of the juxtaposition of steam railroading and rural culture. He is most noted for his 1950's photographs of steam locomotives at night, lit by numerous flashbulbs. He carefully planned the lighting and the staging of these photos, placing human subjects in many.Opened in January 2004, the museum is housed in a former Norfolk & Western Railway passenger train station in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. Originally built in 1905, the building was renovated in 1949 by industrial designer Raymond Loewy, and is one of three contributing structures to the Norfolk and Western Railway Company Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.It displays hundreds of photographic prints and has several interactive displays, including audio that provide information on Link's photographic subjects. Also displayed is some of the equipment that Link used to create his nighttime photographs.

The Science Museum of Western Virginia is a science museum located in Roanoke, Virginia. Exhibit themes include the environment and its health, healthy bodies, computer coding, the scientific method of engineering, and science through toys and amusements. The museum also features a maker space and a garden with a variety of plants with a focus on agriculture. In partnership with Virginia Tech, the Science Museum of Western Virginia sponsors the annual Virginia Science Festival.

Roanoke City Market Historic District, also known as City Market District, is a national historic district located in the Downtown Roanoke area of Roanoke, Virginia. The district's history dates to 1882, when the Norfok and Western Railway (N&W) began the process of locating its headquarters to the small town of Big Lick. That decision precipitated a name change for the town to Roanoke, as well as a migration of the town's business district southeast towards the new railroad depot and hotel being built by the N&W. A town square along Campbell Avenue began seeing use as a makeshift open-air market, and in 1884 the new City of Roanoke's original charter provided for the construction of a municipal market. Completed in 1886, the original market building occupied the northwestern portion of the square; when that building was destroyed by fire it was replaced in 1922 with the current building and its centered arrangement.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, with an area roughly bounded by Williamson Rd., Norfolk Ave., S. Jefferson St., and Church Ave. The district area was increased to include 302 Campbell Ave., SE, and 9 Church Ave, SE, in 2002. The district encompasses 51 contributing buildings and 1 contributing object. The focal point of the area's grid-plan is the City Market Building (1922) set in the middle of the central Market Square. Other notable buildings include the Hartsook Building (1897), Lampros Building (1909), the McGuire Building (1914), and the Goria Brothers Grocery Building (1924). Located in the district is the separately listed Fire Station No. 1.

Downtown is the central business district of Roanoke, Virginia, United States. Developed after the completion of the Shenandoah Valley Railroad in 1882, the Downtown core forms the geographic center of the city and the center of business for the Roanoke Valley and Southwest Virginia, the Roanoke City Market, the Roanoke Downtown Historic District and many other attractions and amenities.

Virginia Can Company-S.H. Heironimus Warehouse is a historic factory and warehouse complex located at Roanoke, Virginia. The U-shaped complex was built in 1912, and consists of an office and two factory buildings. All three of the buildings are two stories in height and are constructed of brick on a raised foundation of poured concrete. A second-story pedestrian bridge connects the two factory buildings and a brick hyphen connects the office building to the north factory building. The complex was built for the Virginia Can Company, the first and largest manufacturer of tin cans in Roanoke, Virginia. After 1951, it housed a clothing factory and then the Heironimus department store warehouse.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, and included in the Roanoke River and Railroad Historic District in 2013. It is located in the Virginia Landmarks Register listed Southeast Roanoke Historic District.
