Downtown is the central business district of Roanoke, Virginia, United States. Developed after the completion of the Shenandoah Valley Railroad in 1882, the Downtown core forms the geographic center of the city and the center of business for the Roanoke Valley and Southwest Virginia, the Roanoke City Market, the Roanoke Downtown Historic District and many other attractions and amenities.

Roanoke City Market Historic District, also known as City Market District, is a national historic district located in the Downtown Roanoke area of Roanoke, Virginia. The district's history dates to 1882, when the Norfok and Western Railway (N&W) began the process of locating its headquarters to the small town of Big Lick. That decision precipitated a name change for the town to Roanoke, as well as a migration of the town's business district southeast towards the new railroad depot and hotel being built by the N&W. A town square along Campbell Avenue began seeing use as a makeshift open-air market, and in 1884 the new City of Roanoke's original charter provided for the construction of a municipal market. Completed in 1886, the original market building occupied the northwestern portion of the square; when that building was destroyed by fire it was replaced in 1922 with the current building and its centered arrangement.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, with an area roughly bounded by Williamson Rd., Norfolk Ave., S. Jefferson St., and Church Ave. The district area was increased to include 302 Campbell Ave., SE, and 9 Church Ave, SE, in 2002. The district encompasses 51 contributing buildings and 1 contributing object. The focal point of the area's grid-plan is the City Market Building (1922) set in the middle of the central Market Square. Other notable buildings include the Hartsook Building (1897), Lampros Building (1909), the McGuire Building (1914), and the Goria Brothers Grocery Building (1924). Located in the district is the separately listed Fire Station No. 1.

Mill Mountain Theatre (MMT) is a professional equity theatre located in Roanoke, Virginia. Originally opening as Mill Mountain Playhouse as a “not-for-profit, non-Equity resident stock theatre”, the location burned down in 1976, leading to a re-opening and renaming at the Center in the Square in 1983. The theater is named after the nearby Mill Mountain, which is a popular theme for the naming of Roanoke landmarks and organizations, including the Mill Mountain Star, Mill Mountain Zoo, and Mill Mountain Coffee and Tea.Mill Mountain Theatre also has a longstanding relationship with Hollins University and the Hollins Theatre Institute.

The Taubman Museum of Art, formerly the Art Museum of Western Virginia, is an art museum in downtown Roanoke, Virginia, United States. It was designed by architect Randall Stout.

Colonial National Bank, also known as the Colonial-American National Bank and the Colonial Arms Building, is a historic bank and office building located at Roanoke, Virginia. It was built in 1926–1927, and is a 12-story, granite and gray-enamel brick building in the Neoclassical style. The building's design echoes that of a classical column; its first three stories compose the base, its shaft is composed of the next seven stories of unornamented brick, and the top two stories of ornamented brick are the capital. The building has a three-story annex built in two stages in 1949 and 1959. The structure was Roanoke's tallest building for almost fifty years. The office building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It has been renovated numerous times, and as of 2018 housed a bank in its lower floors and upscale apartments in the upper portion.

The Wells Fargo Tower (formerly named Dominion Tower, First Union Tower and Wachovia Tower) is a 21-story, 320-foot (98 m) office building in Downtown Roanoke, Virginia. Completed in 1991, this stands as both the tallest building in Roanoke and the tallest building in Southwest Virginia.

The O. Winston Link Museum is a museum dedicated to the photography of O. Winston Link, the 20th-century railroad photographer widely considered the master of the juxtaposition of steam railroading and rural culture. He is most noted for his 1950's photographs of steam locomotives at night, lit by numerous flashbulbs. He carefully planned the lighting and the staging of these photos, placing human subjects in many.Opened in January 2004, the museum is housed in a former Norfolk & Western Railway passenger train station in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. Originally built in 1905, the building was renovated in 1949 by industrial designer Raymond Loewy, and is one of three contributing structures to the Norfolk and Western Railway Company Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.It displays hundreds of photographic prints and has several interactive displays, including audio that provide information on Link's photographic subjects. Also displayed is some of the equipment that Link used to create his nighttime photographs.

First National Bank, also known as People's Federal Building and Liberty Trust Co., is a historic bank and office building located at Roanoke, Virginia. It was built in 1910, and is a seven-story, granite and buff-colored brick building in the French Renaissance style. It features a Roman Ionic columned main entrance and Doric columns in the main banking hall derived from the Temple of Apollo at Delos.The first director of the bank was Tazewell M. Starkey (1829-1901). In 1926 the bank merged with the National Exchange Bank, and took that name. "When the community opened up, there were a lot of members of the Jewish community who have served on various organizations. For instance, Arthur Taubman was on the board of the First National Exchange Bank, on the board of trustees. When that became Dominion Bank, his son, Nicholas F. Taubman, served on that board of trustees, too."It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Fire Station No. 1 is a former fire station listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the Downtown neighborhood of the independent city of Roanoke, Virginia, United States. Modeled after Philadelphia's Independence Hall, Fire Station No. 1 served as one of the longest continuously operating fire stations in the Commonwealth of Virginia from its completion in 1907 through the opening of a replacement facility in 2007. Designed by the Lynchburg firm of Huggins and Bates, No. 1 still stands as a monument to the civic pride of early Roanoke. It is located in the Roanoke City Market Historic District.

The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center is a historic hotel located in the Gainsboro neighborhood of Roanoke, Virginia. Originally built in 1882, the hotel has been rebuilt and expanded many times. The central wing dates to 1938. The hotel is currently owned by Virginia Tech and operated under the Curio Collection by Hilton brand. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

The Boxley Building is a historic commercial building located in Roanoke, Virginia. It was built in 1922, during a wave of post-World War I construction in the city. The building is eight stories, and follows a pattern set by other skyscrapers of the time in consisting of three sections similar to a classical column. The bottom section, or pedestal, is one story fronted with granite; the middle section, or shaft, consists of the next six stories built with beige enameled brick; the top section, or capital, is the eighth story fronted with richly decorated terra cotta panels topped with a finely detailed copper cornice.The building was commissioned by William Wise Boxley, a local builder and developer who was Roanoke's mayor at the time of construction. Boxley was an influential figure in the city, having played a significant role in the founding of the Shenandoah Life Insurance Company and Colonial American Bank as well as sitting on the boards of both Roanoke College and Virginia Military Institute. Boxley was elected to the Roanoke City Council in 1918, and the following year was appointed the city's first mayor under its new council-manager form of government.: 552  The building's architect was Edward G. Frye, whose firm had previously erected the Roanoke Times building, the city's municipal building, and would complete Roanoke's new market building in the same year as the Boxley.: 500, 504, 586 Boxley's building materials company was one of the original tenants of the building, and remained headquartered there until vacating in 2005. The building was empty from the late-2000s until being purchased by a local developer in 2016. The building's offices were converted into residential space, with the bottom four floors used as dormitory housing for international students of two Roanoke-area parochial schools, and the top four floors converted into luxury apartments.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, and it is a contributing structure to the Roanoke Downtown Historic District.

Norfolk and Western Railway Company Historic District is a national historic district located in Roanoke, Virginia. It encompasses three contributing buildings constructed by the Norfolk and Western Railway (N&W). They are the Neoclassical Revival style General Office Building–South (1896, 1903); the Art Deco period General Office Building–North (1931); and the Moderne style Passenger Station (1905, 1949).
