The Athens 2004 Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (Greek: Οργανωτική Επιτροπή Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων Αθήνα 2004), commonly abbreviated to ATHOC, was the organising committee for the 2004 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. Their headquarters was in Nea Ionia – about 7 km (4.3 mi) north of Athens, and 2.1 km (1.3 mi) west of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA). The President of ATHOC was Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki.

Nea Ionia (Greek: Νέα Ιωνία) is a metro station in the municipality of Nea Ionia in the regional unit of North Athens, Attica, Greece. It is located 17.923 km (11.137 mi) from the datum point in Piraeus. It was previous a train station operated by Attica Railways that served Lavriou Square and Strofyli, it was 7.340 km (4.561 mi) from Lavriou Square. The first station on this site was open from 1922 to 1938. This station was named Podarades (Ποδαράδες) for an older name of the settlement which later became the city of Nea Ionia, named for refugees from an area formerly called Ionia in Asia Minor. The present Metro station was opened on 14 March 1956 under its present name. It was the northernmost terminus of Line 1 until March 4, 1957. The station, which features two side platforms was renovated in 2003–4.

Irakleio (Greek: Ηράκλειο, lit. 'Heraklion'), also known as Iraklio on signage, is an Athens metro station in the municipality of Irakleio in the regional unit of North Athens, Attica, Greece. It is marked at the 19.246 km from the starting point in Piraeus station of Line 1. Initially, the station served the Athens–Lavrion Railway and Lavrion Square-Strofyli railway, ran by the Attica Railways. From 1929 the Lavrion branch was operated by Piraeus, Athens and Peloponnese Railways. The station was closed in 1938 for Kifissia traffic but remained open for Lavrion trains until 1957/1962. At the same location, the present station of EIS was opened on 4 March 1957, using the same name. It was the northernmost terminus of EIS until Kifissia station was reopened on 10 August 1958. The station has two passenger platforms and a reversing siding.

Pefkakia (Greek: Πευκάκια) is a metro station in the municipality of Nea Ionia in the regional unit of North Athens, Attica, Greece. It is marked at the 17.231 km from the starting point in Piraeus. The station is founded by the limits of Nea Ionia and is named after the neighbourhood of Pefkakia. It was first opened on 5 July 1956 and was renovated in 2004. It has two platforms. Between the 1990s and 2002, the station was known as Pefkakia-Inepoli, the second name originated from the neighbourhood of Inepoli, the name of the station dropped the second name during the start of the construction and is the current name since that time.

Nea Ionia Municipal Indoor Athletic Center (Greek: Δημοτικό Κλειστό Γυμναστήριο Νέας Ιωνίας), is an indoor sporting arena that is located in Volos, Greece. The arena is mainly used to host basketball and volleyball games. The seating capacity of the arena is 1,964 people.

Omorfokklisia (Greek: Ομορφοκκλησιά, "beautiful church") is a 12th-century Greek Orthodox church in Galatsi, a northeastern suburb of Athens, Greece. This church dedicated to Saint George is considered one of the landmarks of the area.

Nea Ionia (Greek: Νέα Ιωνία, meaning New Ionia) is a town and a northern suburb of the Athens agglomeration, Greece, and a municipality of the Attica region. It was named after Ionia, the region in Anatolia from which many Greeks migrated in the 1920s as a part of the population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Many of the town families originated from the town of Alanya which is currently a part of Turkey. Nea Ionia is 7 km northeast of Athens city centre. The municipality has an area of 4.421 km2. It is served by three Line 1 metro stations: Nea Ionia, Pefkakia and Perissos.

The Galatsi Olympic Hall is a multi-use indoor arena that is located in Galatsi, Athens, Greece. It was the site of table tennis and rhythmic gymnastics at the 2004 Summer Olympics. The Galatsi Olympic Hall has a seating capacity of 6,200, which includes 5,141 permanent seats in the upper tier, and the removable lower tier seats.

On 1 November 2013, two members of the Golden Dawn political party were killed and a third injured in a drive-by shooting attack outside the offices of the Golden Dawn in Neo Irakleio, Athens. The attack was claimed by anti-fascists in retaliation for the murder of Pavlos Fyssas, comments made by the investigating authorities coincide with this claim.
