Ptuj Castle

Ptuj (pronounced [ˈptuːi̯] (listen); German: Pettau, pronounced [ˈpɛtaʊ̯] (listen); Latin: Poetovium/Poetovio) is a town in northeastern Slovenia that is the seat of the Municipality of Ptuj. Ptuj, the oldest recorded city in Slovenia, has been inhabited since the late Stone Age and developed from a Roman military fort. Ptuj was located at a strategically important crossing of the Drava River, along a prehistoric trade route between the Baltic Sea and the Adriatic. The area is part of the traditional region of Styria and it was part of the Austria-Hungarian Empire. In the early 20th century the majority of the residents spoke German, but today the population is largely Slovene. Residents of Ptuj are known as Ptujčani in Slovene.

The City Municipality of Ptuj (pronounced [ˈptuːi̯]; Slovene: Mestna občina Ptuj) is a municipality in northeastern Slovenia. The seat of the municipality is the town of Ptuj. The area is part of the traditional Styria region. The entire municipality is now included in the Drava Statistical Region. The population of the municipality is about 23,700.

The Orpheus Monument (Slovene: Orfejev spomenik) is a Roman monument in Ptuj, Slovenia, an almost 5 metres (16 ft) high and about 1.8 metres (5 ft 11 in) wide stele, carved of white Pohorje marble. It is located at Slovene Square (Slovene: Slovenski trg), the town's central square, in front of the Town Tower. It is the oldest public monument preserved in its original location in Slovenia, the largest discovered monument from the Roman province of the Pannonia Superior, and the symbol of Ptuj.The monolith was originally a grave marker, erected in the 2nd century AD to honor the memory of Marcus Valerius Verus, the duumvir (mayor) of Roman Poetovio. In the Middle Ages, it was used as a pillory. Criminals were tied to the iron rings attached to its lower part. Since March 2008, it has the status of a national cultural monument.The central relief illustrates scenes from the myth of Orpheus, who plays the lyre while mourning his lost love Eurydice. Other reliefs depict the Greek-Egyptian god Serapis, who symbolizes the hope of resurrection. The corners each contain a prone lion gnawing on a ram's head. Beneath this, a relief in the tympanum depicts the Moon goddess Selene, leaning over her dead lover Endymion. All the reliefs and inscriptions are badly eroded.

St. George's Church (Slovene: cerkev sv. Jurija) is a parish church in Ptuj, northeastern Slovenia. It was built in the 12th century and in the 15th century redesigned in the Gothic style. Viewed from Slovene Square (Slovenski trg, the southwest), it is located behind the monolithic Roman tombstone, the Monument of Orpheus, and the free standing Town Tower. There are Renaissance and Baroque gravestones on the exterior walls of the church. The paintings in the interior were made from the late 13th to the end of the 15th century. In 1863 the church became Provost.

The Battle of the Save was fought in 388 between the forces of Roman usurper Magnus Maximus and the Eastern Roman Empire. Emperor Theodosius I defeated Magnus Maximus's army in battle. Later Maximus was captured and executed at Aquileia.

Ptuj City Stadium (Slovene: Mestni stadion Ptuj) is a multi-use stadium in Ptuj, Slovenia. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium has a capacity of 1,592 seats.

The Puch Bridge (Slovene: Puhov most), officially the Bridge over the Drava River in Ptuj (Most čez Dravo na Ptuju), is an extradosed bridge over the Drava River near lake Ptuj in northeastern Slovenia. It is named after the inventor Johann Puch (1862–1914). It is 430 metres (1,410 ft) long and 18.7 m (61 ft) wide, and has an area of 8,097 square metres (87,160 sq ft). It was built from October 2005 until May 2007, when it was opened for traffic. Its architects were Peter Gabrijelčič and Viktor Markelj, who was also its constructor.

Spodnja Hajdina (pronounced [ˈspoːdnja xai̯ˈdiːna]) is a settlement in the Municipality of Hajdina in northeastern Slovenia. The area is part of the traditional region of Styria. It is now included with the rest of the municipality in the Drava Statistical Region.Part of the Roman settlement of Poetovio with Mithraic temples and a burial ground has been excavated at an archaeological site near the present-day settlement.

Mestni Vrh (pronounced [ˈmeːstni ˈʋərx], German: Stadtberg) is a settlement in the hills north of Ptuj in northeastern Slovenia. The area is part of the traditional region of Styria. It is now included with the rest of the Municipality of Ptuj in the Drava Statistical Region.

Lake Ptuj (pronounced [ˈptuːi̯]; Slovene: Ptujsko jezero) is a reservoir on the Drava River southeast of the town of Ptuj in eastern Slovenia. It is the largest reservoir in Slovenia and was created in 1978 when a dam for the Formin hydroelectric power plant was built on the Drava. It is still used as the reservoir for the power plant, but is also popular for rowing, sailing, and fishing.

Zgornja Hajdina (pronounced [ˈzɡoːɾnja xai̯ˈdiːna]) is a settlement and the administrative centre of the Municipality of Hajdina in northeastern Slovenia. The area is part of the traditional region of Styria. It is now included with the rest of the municipality in the Drava Statistical Region.The parish church in the settlement is dedicated to Saint Martin and belongs to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Maribor. It is a late 14th-century church that was greatly expanded in a rebuilding in 1874.A number of archaeological sites close to the settlement show that the area has been settled since prehistory. Of particular interest are the finds associated with the nearby Roman town of Poetovio.

Skorba (pronounced [ˈskɔːɾba]) is a village in the Municipality of Hajdina in northeastern Slovenia. The area is part of the traditional region of Styria. It is included with the rest of the municipality in the Drava Statistical Region.A number of archaeological finds close to the settlement, including a villa rustica, are associated with the nearby Roman town of Poetovio.
