Aby, Lincolnshire

Aby for Claythorpe was a railway station on the East Lincolnshire Railway which served the hamlets of Aby and Claythorpe in Lincolnshire between 1848 and 1961. It originally opened as Claythorpe, but was renamed in 1885. Withdrawal of goods facilities took place in 1961, on the same day that the station was closed to passengers. The line through the station is closed.

Claythorpe is a hamlet about 5 miles (8 km) north-west from the town of Alford, Lincolnshire, England, most notable for its water mill. The population is now included in the civil parish of Authorpe. Claythorpe Mill was for a time a restaurant but is now a visitor attraction with wildfowl gardens, animals and a cafe. It was known previously as Empire Mills when it was built as a corn mill in the 18th century. It was largely rebuilt in the 19th century, and the top floor was destroyed by fire and rebuilt again in 1890. Originally powered by a water wheel it has worked using a turbine since 1890, which is housed at the rear of the building. The steel wheel and gearing are still there, and it is a Grade II listed building. It was the last regularly working water mill in Lincolnshire, although it has not been in use since 1977.Claythorpe Manor (formerly Claythorpe Hall) is a Grade II listed red brick farmhouse dating from the 18th century.

Beesby is a village and (as Beesby in the Marsh) a former civil parish, now in the parish of Beesby with Saleby, in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. The village is situated approximately 4 miles (6 km) south-west from Mablethorpe, and just to the east of the A1104 road. In 1961 the parish had a population of 100. On 1 April 1987 the parish was abolished to form "Beesby with Saleby".The Grade II listed parish church is dedicated to St Andrew.

Belleau is a hamlet and civil parish in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated approximately 7 miles (11 km) south-east of Louth, and 4 miles (6 km) north-west of Alford. The parish of Belleau includes the hamlet of Claythorpe. According to the census of 2001, the population of Belleau in that year was eighteen, living in eight households. At the time of the 2011 census, the population remained fewer than 100 and was included in the civil parish of Authorpe. The name of the village is taken from the spring of the rivulet Eau which rises there.The Grade II listed parish church of Belleau is dedicated to St John the Baptist. The church was almost entirely rebuilt in 1862. Near the church are the remains of an old manor house, the former home of the Earls of Lindsey. Other Bellau listed buildings are a pigeoncote and barn at Manor Farm. A notable Belleau resident was the Puritan leader Henry Vane the Younger. Vane bought the Belleau estate after his marriage to Frances, the daughter of Sir Christopher Wray. Roger Williams, the founder of the American state of Rhode Island, dedicated one of his books to Frances after he came to stay at Belleau; he shared an interest in religious liberty with Vane. Vane employed the radical clergyman John Wheelwright as a chaplain. England international footballer Beaumont Jarrett was Rector of Belleau from 1895 to his death in 1905.

Greenfield Priory was a Cistercian priory in Greenfield, near Aby, Lincolnshire, England. It was founded before the year 1153 by Eudo of Grainsby and Ralf of Aby, and his son, Ranulf earl of Chester was also a benefactor of the house. The bishop visited the priory in 1294 and asked the prioress to resign. Her successor, Cecily de Parys, was not much better, for in 1303 Bishop Dalderby heard that she had been absent from her house for two years, and that it was in danger of serious loss. She resigned in 1305. A moat, which is nearly complete and mainly water filled, is believed to have surrounded the priory remains, and traces of other earthworks are visible on air photographs.

It is situated between the A16 and the A157 roads, 6 miles (10 km) south-east from Louth and 4.5 miles (7 km) north-west from Alford. Authorpe is mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book as "Agetorp", in the South Riding of Lindsey Hundred of Louthesk. Noted are 5 villagers, 1 smallholder and 4 freemen, with 3 ploughlands and 8 acres (0.03 km2) of meadow. In 1066 Godric was Lord of the Manor, by 1086 transferred to Ansgot of Burwell, who was also Tenant-in-chief.The former church of Saint Margaret was built of greenstone, dated from the 15th century and was restored in 1848. It was declared redundant by the Diocese of Lincoln in July 1980, and demolished in 1982. Authorpe Hall Farm is a Grade II listed building built of red brick, dating from the 16th century with 18th-century additions, and 19th-century alterations.Authorpe railway station served the village between 1848 and 1964. Authorpe Hedgehog Care Centre is in the village.

It is situated about 6 miles (10 km) south-east from Louth, and about 5 miles (8 km) north-west from Alford. In 1971 the parish had a population of 30. On 1 April 1987 the parish was abolished and merged with "Withern with Stain".

Ailby is a hamlet in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated less than 1 mile (1.6 km) north-west from Alford, and forms part of the civil parish of Rigsby with Ailby. The village does not possess a place name sign, and its only service is a small garden centre and a livery yard. The ecclesiastical parish is Rigsby with Ailsby, part of the Alford Group of the Deanery of Calcewaithe & Candleshoe. The parish church is St James at Rigsby.

Withern is a village in the civil parish of Withern with Stain, in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated on the A157 road, and 7 miles (11 km) south-east from Louth. Stain was once an independent parish but was combined with Withern when the old church of St John the Baptist was destroyed some centuries ago. According to A Dictionary of British Place Names, the Withern name is derived from the Old English Widu or wudu, with oern, meaning "house in the Wood". Another source gives the name as deriving from Old Norse vithr "wood" + OE aerne "house", meaning "the house in the wood", giving 'Witheren' in the 14th century. In the 1086 Domesday Book, the village name is given as Widerne. The parish was in the ancient Calceworth Wapentake in the East Lindsey district in the parts of Lindsey. After the Poor Law Amendment Act reforms of 1834, the parish became part of the Louth Poor Law Union. The common lands, some 600 acres (2.4 km2), were enclosed in 1839. The now redundant church of St Margaret's is the burial place of Auguste Pahud and Annie Pahud, whose love story is the raison d'être for the local Hubbard's Hills park. St Margaret's was rebuilt in 1812. A Wesleyan Methodist chapel was built in 1875, though the congregation dates from about 1811. A Public Elementary School was built in the hamlet of Stain in 1850 and enlarged in 1858 to hold 100 children. The Wesleyans built a school in 1875. The manor house was the seat of the Fitzwilliam family. It was occupied as a farmhouse in 1900, but the moat still exists. The Grant family lived in the house at one time, their daughter being Annie Pahud.

South Reston is a village in the civil parish of Reston, in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated on the A157 road 5 miles (8.0 km) south-east from the town of Louth. In 1971 the parish had a population of 144. The parish of South Reston was enlarged by the abolition of the parish of Castle Carlton on 1 April 1936. On 1 April 1987 the parish was abolished and merged with North Reston to form "Reston".South Reston parish church was dedicated to Saint Edith; it was declared redundant by the Diocese of Lincoln in 1980, and demolished in 1982. The 15th-century octagonal font remains in the churchyard, as a sundial, and is Grade II listed.The Hall is a Grade II listed brick farmhouse dating from the 17th century.South Reston school was built in 1858 and survived long enough to celebrate its centenary.There is also a Methodist church and a public house, the Waggon and Horses.
