Tothill

Withern is a village in the civil parish of Withern with Stain, in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated on the A157 road, and 7 miles (11 km) south-east from Louth. Stain was once an independent parish but was combined with Withern when the old church of St John the Baptist was destroyed some centuries ago. According to A Dictionary of British Place Names, the Withern name is derived from the Old English Widu or wudu, with oern, meaning "house in the Wood". Another source gives the name as deriving from Old Norse vithr "wood" + OE aerne "house", meaning "the house in the wood", giving 'Witheren' in the 14th century. In the 1086 Domesday Book, the village name is given as Widerne. The parish was in the ancient Calceworth Wapentake in the East Lindsey district in the parts of Lindsey. After the Poor Law Amendment Act reforms of 1834, the parish became part of the Louth Poor Law Union. The common lands, some 600 acres (2.4 km2), were enclosed in 1839. The now redundant church of St Margaret's is the burial place of Auguste Pahud and Annie Pahud, whose love story is the raison d'être for the local Hubbard's Hills park. St Margaret's was rebuilt in 1812. A Wesleyan Methodist chapel was built in 1875, though the congregation dates from about 1811. A Public Elementary School was built in the hamlet of Stain in 1850 and enlarged in 1858 to hold 100 children. The Wesleyans built a school in 1875. The manor house was the seat of the Fitzwilliam family. It was occupied as a farmhouse in 1900, but the moat still exists. The Grant family lived in the house at one time, their daughter being Annie Pahud.

Gayton le Marsh is a village and civil parish in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England It is situated 6 miles (9.7 km) south-east from the town of Louth and about 6 miles (9.7 km) north from Alford. The population of the civil parish was 155 at the 2011 census.Gayton le Marsh parish church was dedicated to Saint George. It had a western tower, was rebuilt in 1847, and was demolished in 1971.A red-brick drainage pumping station was built here about 1850, which is now a Grade II listed building.Gayton le Marsh CE School was built as a National School in 1837, and closed in 1924.

South Reston is a village in the civil parish of Reston, in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated on the A157 road 5 miles (8.0 km) south-east from the town of Louth. In 1971 the parish had a population of 144. The parish of South Reston was enlarged by the abolition of the parish of Castle Carlton on 1 April 1936. On 1 April 1987 the parish was abolished and merged with North Reston to form "Reston".South Reston parish church was dedicated to Saint Edith; it was declared redundant by the Diocese of Lincoln in 1980, and demolished in 1982. The 15th-century octagonal font remains in the churchyard, as a sundial, and is Grade II listed.The Hall is a Grade II listed brick farmhouse dating from the 17th century.South Reston school was built in 1858 and survived long enough to celebrate its centenary.There is also a Methodist church and a public house, the Waggon and Horses.

Great Carlton is a village and civil parish in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 136. It is situated 5 miles (8.0 km) southeast from the market town of Louth, Lincolnshire. Great Carlton is listed in the 1086 Domesday Book as "Magna Carleton". The name Carlton derives from the Old English 'Ceorlatun' meaning "the village of the free peasants", from the word 'ceorl' meaning "free peasant". There was a market granted to Great Carlton in 1275. The parish church is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, and was largely rebuilt in 1861 by James Fowler in 13th-century style, although it retains its 15th-century Perpendicular tower. It is a Grade II listed building.A notable land owner and freeman of Great Carlton was George Smith, father of Captain John Smith (1580–1631); the same John Smith who acquired great fame as President of the Virginia Company at Jamestown in North America. John Smith was likely born in this village on his father's farm, but his parents (mother Alice Rickard) had to travel south to St. Helena's Parish Church in Willoughby by Alford for his infant baptism on Saturday, 9 Jan 1580. George leased other property from Lord Willoughby de Eresby. Alice Rickard Smith descended from the Rickards of Great Heck, South Yorkshire.The Grade II listed church lychgate dates from 1871 and was erected by Canon Pretyman.Great Carlton Church of England School was founded in 1716 as Great Carlton Free School. It later became a National School, and by 1906 it was known as Great Carlton School. It closed in the summer of 1976.

Authorpe is a village and civil parish in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated between the A16 and the A157 roads, 6 miles (10 km) south-east from Louth and 4.5 miles (7 km) north-west from Alford. Authorpe is mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book as "Agetorp", in the South Riding of Lindsey Hundred of Louthesk. Noted are 5 villagers, 1 smallholder and 4 freemen, with 3 ploughlands and 8 acres (0.03 km2) of meadow. In 1066 Godric was Lord of the Manor, by 1086 transferred to Ansgot of Burwell, who was also Tenant-in-chief.The former church of Saint Margaret was built of greenstone, dated from the 15th century and was restored in 1848. It was declared redundant by the Diocese of Lincoln in July 1980, and demolished in 1982. Authorpe Hall Farm is a Grade II listed building built of red brick, dating from the 16th century with 18th-century additions, and 19th-century alterations.Authorpe railway station served the village between 1848 and 1964. Authorpe Hedgehog Care Centre is in the village.

Claythorpe is a hamlet about 5 miles (8 km) north-west from the town of Alford, Lincolnshire, England, most notable for its water mill. The population is now included in the civil parish of Authorpe. Claythorpe Mill was for a time a restaurant but is now a visitor attraction with wildfowl gardens, animals and a cafe. It was known previously as Empire Mills when it was built as a corn mill in the 18th century. It was largely rebuilt in the 19th century, and the top floor was destroyed by fire and rebuilt again in 1890. Originally powered by a water wheel it has worked using a turbine since 1890, which is housed at the rear of the building. The steel wheel and gearing are still there, and it is a Grade II listed building. It was the last regularly working water mill in Lincolnshire, although it has not been in use since 1977.Claythorpe Manor (formerly Claythorpe Hall) is a Grade II listed red brick farmhouse dating from the 18th century.

Aby for Claythorpe was a railway station on the East Lincolnshire Railway which served the hamlets of Aby and Claythorpe in Lincolnshire between 1848 and 1961. It originally opened as Claythorpe, but was renamed in 1885. Withdrawal of goods facilities took place in 1961, on the same day that the station was closed to passengers. The line through the station is closed.

Castle Carlton is a hamlet and former civil parish, now in the parish of Reston, in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is approximately 5 miles (8 km) south of Louth, and just north of the A157 road. In 1931 the parish had a population of 23. On 1 April 1936 the parish was abolished and merged with South Reston.At Castle Carlton, there is a wide moat surrounding a mound on which stood a twelfth-century motte and bailey castle, most likely wooden, founded by Justiciar Hugh Bardolph, who is said to have slain a monster.The village had established itself as a commercial centre by the thirteenth century, reputedly after Hugh Bardolph developed it as a "new town", and it was sometimes known as Market Carlton. Today, it is considered a deserted medieval village, or DMV.The church was dedicated to the Holy Cross and was a small Perpendicular building. It was demolished in 1902.

Beesby is a village and (as Beesby in the Marsh) a former civil parish, now in the parish of Beesby with Saleby, in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. The village is situated approximately 4 miles (6 km) south-west from Mablethorpe, and just to the east of the A1104 road. In 1961 the parish had a population of 100. On 1 April 1987 the parish was abolished to form "Beesby with Saleby".The Grade II listed parish church is dedicated to St Andrew.

Authorpe was a railway station on the East Lincolnshire Railway, which served the village of Authorpe in Lincolnshire between 1848 and 1964. The station was closed to passengers in 1961, and withdrawal of goods facilities took place in 1964. The line through the station is closed.

Castle Hill is the name given to the once substantial motte and bailey, perhaps double bailey, apparently associated with the then new town of Castle Carlton in the county of Lincolnshire, some 7 miles south-east of Louth, between the villages of North and South Reston (grid reference TF395836). It was founded in the 12th century by Hugh Bardolf.
