Chedworth

The Anglican Church of St Andrew at Chedworth in the Cotswold District of Gloucestershire, England was built in the late 12th century. It is a grade I listed building.

Chedworth Roman Villa is located near Chedworth, Gloucestershire, England and is a scheduled monument. It is one of the largest and most elaborate Roman villas so far discovered in Britain and one with the latest occupation beyond the Roman period. The villa was built in phases from the early 2nd century to the 5th century, with the 4th-century construction transforming the building into an elite dwelling arranged around three sides of a courtyard. The 4th-century building included a heated and furnished west wing containing a dining-room (triclinium) with a fine mosaic floor, as well as two separate bathing suites: one for damp-heat and one for dry-heat. The villa was discovered in 1864, and was excavated and opened to public view soon afterwards. It was acquired in 1924 by the National Trust who have conducted a long-term conservation programme, with new on-site facilities and cover-buildings. Historians have debated whether Chedworth was a villa rustica or a religious sanctuary and hostel, as evidence has been found in support of both arguments. Most currently believe, however, that Chedworth was the former, inhabited by a very wealthy Romano-Briton.

Royal Air Force Chedworth or more simply RAF Chedworth is a former Royal Air Force satellite station located near Chedworth, Gloucestershire, England. It was used mostly for training during its existence and has been inactive since the 1980s.

Chedworth Nature Reserve (grid reference SP048143) is a 6-hectare (15-acre) nature reserve in Gloucestershire. The site is listed in the 'Cotswold District' Local Plan 2001-2011 as a Key Wildlife Site (KWS). The Chedworth Nature Reserve is owned and managed by the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and was purchased in 1969. It was one of the earliest acquisitions of the trust which was formed earlier in the decade in 1961. Related sites Chedworth Railway Tunnel and Chedworth Woods are also listed in the 'Cotswold District' Local Plan 2001-2011 as Key Wildlife Sites (KWS). Chedworth Cutting Fault, Chedworth South Villa Cutting and Chedworth Tufa Site are listed in the 'Cotswold District' Local Plan 2001-2011 as Regionally Important Geological Sites (RIGS).

Foss Cross railway station was on the Midland and South Western Junction Railway in Gloucestershire. The station opened on 1 August 1891 with the section of the line between Cirencester Watermoor and the junction at Andoversford with the Great Western Railway's Cheltenham Lansdown to Banbury line, which had opened in 1881. Foss Cross was an isolated station, and the nearest village was Chedworth, over a mile away, and that petitioned successfully for its own station, which opened just a year later. Other villages such as Bibury were up to four miles away. The result was that the station was very lightly used for passenger traffic and towards the end of its life only one passenger a day used it regularly.However, what it lacked in passengers it made up in goods traffic. The station handled much agricultural traffic until the 1930s and there was also a set of sidings leading to stone quarries. Some of the stone was used by the railway, and water from the large water tower at Cirencester Watermoor station was hauled regularly to Foss Cross sidings in rail-mounted tankers to supply the stone crushing equipment located there. Foss Cross station closed to both passengers and goods when the line closed to all traffic in 1961. The main station building and part of the platform remained in 2013, along with a cattle dock, two huts and foundations of the goods shed. In 1929 a train consisting of 67 wagons with a weight of 475 tons conveyed the dismantled Rose Cottage from Chedworth from Foss Cross to Brentford on the first part of its journey to Michigan where it was rebuilt on the instructions of Henry Ford. Today the platform remains along with two structures (see the picture of this article). The main building is very overgrown but you walk along the tree covered platform and enter via the middle door. Inside are some faded signs on the door and some men's urinals at the far end. The whole area is very overgrown but you can still see the station very clearly.

Foss Cross Quarry (grid reference SP056092) is a 0.67-hectare (1.7-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Gloucestershire, notified in 1972. The site is listed in the 'Cotswold District' Local Plan 2001-2011 (on line) as a Key Wildlife Site (KWS) and a Regionally Important Geological Site (RIGS).

Compton Abdale is a small village in Gloucestershire, England, on the Roman "White Way", which ran North from Cirencester ("Corinium"). The village lies about 9 miles North of Cirencester, 1 mile South of the A40 London road. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol. Value, £81. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Bristol. The church was repaired in 1859.The Anglican church building, St Oswald's, situated at the top of a steep hill, dates back to the 13th century and features unusual gargoyles. At the foot of the church path in the centre of the village a spring-fed brook emerges from a "crocodile" head constructed from stone by a local mason in the mid-19th century. This brook flows through the village before eventually joining the River Coln at Cassey Compton, which in turn joins the Thames near Lechlade. The remains of a Roman villa to the South of the village, in a wood now called Compton Grove, were known to local people in the 19th century, when some surviving materials were removed. The villa site was excavated in 1931 by a schoolmaster and pupils from Cheltenham Grammar School, but the principal trench left by their excavations was later filled from the brook by the landowner to form a swimming pool.

The Anglican Church of St Michael at Withington in the Cotswold District of Gloucestershire, England was built in the 12th century. It is a grade I listed building.

Withington is a Cotswold village and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England, about 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Cheltenham and 8 miles (13 km) north of Cirencester. The River Coln runs through the village. The parish includes the hamlets of Hilcot, Foxcote and Cassey Compton. The parish population taken at the 2011 census was 532.The site of a Roman villa lies to the south of the village. Remains of the villa were rediscovered in 1811 by Samuel Lysons, and investigations by the Time Team television programme for an episode first broadcast in 2006 found further Romano-British buildings east of the villa, towards the river.The origin of the name is unclear but it is found in records as early as 737 AD (Wudiandun, which would mean the hill of Wudia: Wudia may be a real settler or the legendary Germanic hero Witege). The other English places called Withington may have different origins. In his 1955 work, H. P. R. Finberg argued for continuity between Anglo-Saxon Withington and an earlier Roman settlement. During Saxon times there was an important monastery at Withington. The parish church of St Michael and All Angels dates from the 12th century and is a Grade I listed building. The church was altered in the 15th century when the Perpendicular clerestory and higher tower were added, and has been described as "a typical example of an important Cotswold church".From 1891 to 1961, Withington had a railway station on the Midland and South Western Junction Railway which ran between Cirencester and Cheltenham. The Mill Inn, now the only public house in Withington, is credited locally with creating the popular "chicken in a basket" fried chicken and chips meal in the 1960s.The 2000 Trees music festival is held annually at Upcote Farm, near the village. From April to May 2021, it was filmed as the fictional village of Cotson for the folk horror film Men, released in 2022 and directed by Alex Garland.

Withington railway station was on the Midland and South Western Junction Railway serving the village of Withington in Gloucestershire. The station opened to passengers on 1 August 1891 with the opening of the section of the line between Cirencester Watermoor and the junction at Andoversford with the Great Western Railway's Cheltenham Lansdown to Banbury line, which had opened in 1881. The station was originally called just "Withington", but was renamed after the Grouping of 1923 allocated the M&SWJR to the GWR, which already had a Withington station at the village of the same name in Herefordshire. Its official name after 1924 was "Withington (Glos)". The station was always lightly used and from 1956 staffing was withdrawn and it was downgraded to halt status. The line closed to all traffic in 1961 and the station buildings were demolished, though traces of one of the platforms remain. An enamel station sign for Withington station is at Winchcombe Railway Museum.

The Anglican Church of St Peter within the grounds of Rendcomb College at Rendcomb in the Cotswold District of Gloucestershire, England was rebuilt in the 16th century. It is a grade I listed building.

Rendcomb is a village in the Cotswold local authority area of the English county of Gloucestershire. It is about five miles north of Cirencester in the Churn valley.
