Mile Elm

Stock is a small settlement and former ecclesiastical parish, now part of Calne Without civil parish, in the ceremonial county of Wiltshire, England. It lies about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of the town of Calne. Samuel Lewis said in A Topographical Dictionary of England (1848): STOCK, a tything, in the parish, union, and hundred of Calne, Chippenham and Calne, and N. divisions of Wilts; containing 328 inhabitants. It is situated on a tributary of the river Avon, and to the south of the road leading from Droitwich to Alcester. Stock was part of the Calne hundred, and its history is included in the parish history of Calne in the Wiltshire Victoria County History's Volume XVII (2002). Although Stock had open fields and common pastures, it did not have a nuclear settlement. Before the Norman Conquest of England and still in 1086 the land at Stock was almost certainly part of the royal estate of Calne. Land at Stockley lies to the south, and the boundary between Stock and Stockley is uncertain. Land at Stock had been granted away from Calne by 1144, although the area it then covered is unknown. Some of it was probably granted to Fulk de Cauntelo about 1199, and from 1763 on Stock was inherited with the manors of Calne and Calstone as part of the Bowood House estate. In 1728 Stock was divided between Hollow Ditch farm (now called Holly Ditch) and a farm now gone, with buildings near Quobbs Farm, on the west side of the road from Devizes to Calne (now the A3102). As part of the Bowood estate, the land of those two farms, and other land at Stock, totalling about 350 acres, was inherited by Charles Petty-Fitzmaurice, 9th Marquess of Lansdowne, in 1999.The Ordnance Survey map surveyed in 1884 shows a roadside hamlet named Stock Street near Stock Street Farm, and another named Mile Elm, further south along the road and near a farm of the same name which lies between Quobbs and Holly Ditch. Modern maps show only Mile Elm.

Kingsbury Green Academy is a mixed secondary school and sixth form in Calne, Wiltshire, England for pupils aged 11 to 18. The school's present site to the south of the town was the last home of the former Bentley Grammar School, from 1957 to 1974, and the present school was called The John Bentley School when it was created as a new comprehensive in 1974. The school's name was changed to Kingsbury Green Academy in 2019, after it joined the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy Trust.

Bentley's School, Calne, in Calne, Wiltshire, England, was a school founded in 1660 by John Bentley and closed in 1974 by Wiltshire County Council. At different times it was known as the Bentley Grammar School and Calne County School.

Calne railway station was opened on 3 November 1863 by the Great Western Railway as a terminus for their 5 miles (8.0 km) Chippenham and Calne branch line from the Great Western Main Line at Chippenham, England. It was a short distance from Calne town centre and had one platform. The station, when first opened, had its own engine shed. In the early years, the seven sidings were usually full due to the amount of traffic arriving from the nearby Chippenham station. Following closure in 1965 as part of the nationwide Beeching Axe, the buildings were left to be vandalised but were eventually taken down. A few years later the Station Road Industrial Estate was built on the site, which in turn was replaced by a housing development in 2014.

Calne Town Hall is a municipal building in The Strand, Calne, Wiltshire, England. The town hall, which is the meeting place of Calne Town Council, is a grade II listed building.

Calne () is a town and civil parish in Wiltshire, southwestern England, at the northwestern extremity of the North Wessex Downs hill range, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Calne is on a small river, the Marden, that rises 2 miles (3 kilometres) away in the Wessex Downs, and is the only town on that river. It is on the A4 road national route 19 mi (31 km) east of Bath, 6 mi (10 km) east of Chippenham, 13 mi (21 km) west of Marlborough and 16 mi (26 km) southwest of Swindon. Wiltshire's county town of Trowbridge is 15 mi (24 km) to the southwest, with London 82 mi (132 km) due east as the crow flies. At the 2021 Census, Calne had 19,074 inhabitants.

St Mary's Church is the main Anglican church in the town of Calne, Wiltshire, England. The church is large and cruciform, with a tall north tower; it stands in a triangular churchyard at the heart of the town. Begun in the 12th century, it is described by Pevsner as "the proud church of a prosperous clothiers' town". The church is a Grade I listed building.

Adam House is a Grade II* listed house at 13 The Green, Calne, Wiltshire, England. The house dates from the seventeenth century and was refronted around 1740. It also includes nineteenth and twentieth century interior and rear additions. It was said by Lord Shelbourne to be named after the architect Robert Adam, who lived there while working on Bowood House.

St Mary's School is a private day and boarding school in Calne, Wiltshire, England, for girls aged 11 to 18. The school is a registered charity.In 2023, the school's A Level results ranked third in the UK and joint second in the south-west of England.

Calne Without is a civil parish in Wiltshire, England. It is a rural parish surrounding the town of Calne, extending west to the Avon and south to the Roman road from London to Bath. Settlements in the parish are the village of Derry Hill; the small villages of Calstone Wellington, Sandy Lane, Stockley and Studley; the dispersed settlement of Stock; the hamlets of Blackland, Broad's Green, Buck Hill, Mile Elm, Pewsham and Theobald's Green; and part of the hamlet of Ratford. The parish also encompasses the former tithing of Calstone, and the country house estates of Bowood and Whetham. The parish was created in 1890 when the large Calne parish was divided. The municipal area became Calne Within parish and the remainder formed Calne Without, together with the land of the abolished Blackland and Calstone Wellington parishes and the liberty of Bowood, and a small area of Bremhill parish. In 1934, Calne Without was reduced in size by transferring to Calne Within an area with a population of around 900, and transferring a smaller area to Cherhill. Finally, when Pewsham parish (to the west) was abolished in 1984 its rural area was transferred to Calne Without.The River Marden flows through the parish from its source near Calstone Wellington.

Black Dog Halt is a former railway station on the Chippenham and Calne line in Wiltshire, England. Originally created in 1863 as a private stop for Lord Lansdowne of Bowood House, it became a public request stop after the formation of British Rail. The halt was closed and demolished in 1965, and today it is part of National Cycle Route 403.

Stockley is a small village 4 km (2 mi) south of Calne in Wiltshire, England. It lies about 3⁄4 mile (1.2 km) north of the larger village of Heddington, at the foot of the western extremity of the North Wessex Downs. No settlements were recorded in Domesday Book, and the area was part of the king's large Calne estate. Stockley, together with Stock to the north, anciently formed a triangle of farmland to the south of Calne town; Stockley's southern boundary was the Roman road, and the boundary with Stock is uncertain. The Wiltshire Victoria County History recounts the history of the farmsteads, most of which were along the roads at the edges of the triangle. From 1763 some of the farms were part of the Bowood estate; most of that part was sold by the Marquess of Lansdowne in 2001.Two farms lent their names to present-day hamlets: Broad's Green and Mile Elm. The village is within the civil parish of Calne Without. Wiltshire Council is the unitary authority, which is responsible for all significant local government functions. In 1841 a Primitive Methodist chapel was built at Stockley. It closed in 1966 and has since been demolished.Stockley was transferred from Calne ecclesiastical parish to Heddington in 1887; today the parish is part of the Oldbury grouping.
