Ruardean Hill

Ruardean Woodside is a village in Gloucestershire, England, located in the Forest of Dean and tucked away behind Ruardean Hill and Brierley. There is a primary school and a village hall. The Roebuck was the last of the local pubs to close.

Harrow Hill is a village situated in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, England. It is contiguous with the larger village of Drybrook. Originally, the village was known as Harry Hill. "Until fairly recently the village was once called Harry Hill" The Harrow Hill church, Holy Trinity, was opened in 1817, and is known as The Forest Church. The village has its own football club, Harrow Hill F.C. The main route that bisects the village is Trinity Road. This links the village to Drybrook and the A4136 (Gloucester to Monmouth). At the halfway point of the road stands a battle weary red telephone box, which is sadly in a state of neglect. From here, there are good views across the valley to Ruardean Hill. The Football club can be found at the end of Larksfield Road, and is easily located by the floodlight towers that stand on the corners of the main pitch (a further pitch is located adjacent to the car park).

Little now remains of the village's industrial history, but once it was a centre for iron-ore smelting furnaces, forges and coal mines. The Norman castle, now little more than a mound, commanded the shortest route from Gloucester Castle to the Welsh Marches and the Wye Valley.

The site is listed in the 'Forest of Dean Local Plan Review' as a Key Wildlife Site (KWS).The site is managed by the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust under lease from the Forestry Commission since 1983.

Puddlebrook Quarry (grid reference SO646183) is a 0.7-hectare (1.7-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Gloucestershire, near Drybrook notified in 1986. The site is listed in the 'Forest of Dean Local Plan Review' as a Key Wildlife Site (KWS).The Quarry is north of Mitcheldean Meend Marsh which is a nature reserve.

Brierley is a village in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. It has one petrol station and a shop, both of which are both operated by Jet. Brierley was the birthplace of Winifred Foley (25 July 1914 – 21 March 2009) author of the autobiographical A Child in the Forest (1974), and other later works including No Pipe Dreams for Father (1977). The village was also the birthplace of her father, Charlie Mason, who led the hunger march to the workhouse of Westbury during the pit strikes of May 1926.

Drybrook Road is a closed station on the Cinderford to Coleford direct railway line in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, near the village of Drybrook. The former station was on the former Severn and Wye Railway system. It opened in 1875 and closed in 1929.In the early 20th century the station was used to load timber from the local forest. In 1903 a coal train was involved in an accident at Drybrook.

Ruardyn Castle was a manor house in the village of Ruardean. Its ruins have been scheduled as an ancient monument.It was originally a manor house built in Norman times, but because of its strategic importance it was crenellated in 1311 and became a castle. The surviving evidence suggests the site comprised a courtyard, flanked by short ranges of buildings to the north east and south west, with a tower in the western corner. A gatehouse stood to the south east, with a hollow way leading from it towards the parish church. The site was probably enclosed by a curtain wall. The castle suffered major damage during the English Civil war in the 17th century.Nowadays, little remains of the castle, just large mounds with some stone wall surviving on the steep bank side. By the size of the landscape that it once stood, it is suggested that it was of considerable size. Its ruins can be found in the field behind St. John the Baptist church.

Steam Mills is a village in the Forest of Dean, west Gloucestershire, England. During the 18th and 19th centuries there were local coal mines and a steam-powered mill, which lead to the name of the village. An engineering works was established in the 1880s to support the mining.Today the village has an industrial park for businesses (including Freeminers Brewery, named after the Forest of Dean custom of free-mining), a petrol filling station and a carpet shop. The village is home to Steam Mills Primary School designed by architect Alfred Smith. The 5 acres (2.0 ha) lake is used for angling with Carp, Bream and Brown Trout being caught.
