Saltville, Virginia

The Preston House, also known as the Palmer House, was a historic home located at Saltville, Smyth County, Virginia. The original section was built about 1795. It was a two-story, gable-roofed, double-pile frame structure covered with beaded weatherboard. It consisted of a two-story, five bay center section flanked by later, and lower, two-story, three bay flanking wings. The house was built by lawyer and politician Francis Preston (1765–1836), whose family owned the salt works. The house was destroyed in 1978. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

Saltville Historic District is a national historic district located at Saltville, Smyth County, Virginia. The district includes 104 contributing buildings and 3 contributing sites in the central business district and surrounding residential areas of Saltville. It includes a variety of residential and commercial buildings primarily dating from the late-19th to mid-20th centuries. Notable buildings and sites include Well Fields, Saltville Golf Course, Office Building (1850), Mathieson Alkali Office Building (1894), company store (1895), First National Bank of Saltville, St. Paul's Episcopal Church (1896), Gothic Revival style Madam Russell Memorial United Methodist Church, Duplex House (1894), Saltville Post Office (1931), Piggly-Wiggly Store, Saltville Savings Bank (1920), and Saltville Town Hall (1949). It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

Saltville Battlefields Historic District is a historic American Civil War battlefield and national historic district located around Saltville, in Smyth County and Washington County, Virginia. The district includes 3 contributing buildings, 31 contributing sites, 4 contributing structures, and 1 contributing object near Saltville. It encompasses the core areas of two battles, fought on October 2 and December 20, 1864, known as the Battle of Saltville I and Battle of Saltville II, where Confederate and Union forces contested control of the South's most important salt production facilities. Notable resources include the sites of salt furnaces, Well Fields, Fort Statham, Lover's Leap Defenses, Saltville Gap Overlooks, Mill Cliff gun emplacements, Fort Breckinridge, Fort Hatton, Sanders’ House/Williams Site Battlefield/field hospital, William A. Stuart House, and the Elizabeth Cemetery. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

The Second Battle of Saltville (December 20–21, 1864), was fought near the town of Saltville, Virginia, during the American Civil War. The battle was a Union victory, and marked the end of a Union excursion known as Stoneman's 1864 raid or Stoneman's raid into Southwest Virginia. The Union objective at Saltville was to destroy a salt works that produced over half of the salt used by the Confederacy to preserve meat—including that used to supply the Army of Northern Virginia. After the defeat of Brevet Major General Stephen G. Burbridge's expedition against Saltville (First Battle of Saltville) earlier in the year, Union Major General George Stoneman reassembled a force to again try to destroy the saltworks there. Stoneman's force included Burbridge's Division and a brigade under Brigadier General Alvan C. Gillem. Starting in Tennessee and moving to Southwestern Virginia, Stoneman defeated a Confederate force in Virginia's Battle of Marion on the December 17–18. In that battle, Union forces drove away a Confederate force commanded by Major General John C. Breckinridge. After the action at Marion, Stoneman's force advanced to Saltville. Breckinridge was not present, but he had 500 men at Saltville under the command of Colonel Robert Preston. Union Brigadier General Gillem led the Union advance and attacked first. Burbridge joined the fight shortly afterwards, and the two Federal columns overwhelmed the town's defenses. Colonel Preston ordered a retreat, and Stoneman's troops entered the town and severely damanged the saltworks, accomplishing the objective of the Union raid. After the fight, Union troops returned to Kentucky and Tennessee while suffering losses from severe cold and harassment by a brigade commanded by Brigadier General Basil W. Duke.

Lick Skillet is an unincorporated community in Smyth County, Virginia, United States. According to local legend, Lick Skillet's name is derived from the roads around the community which form the appearance of a skillet.

Glade Spring Commercial Historic District is the downtown core of the Town of Glade Spring, a community of 1,500 residents in northeastern Washington County, Virginia, less than three miles southwest of the Smyth County line. Located on the gently rolling floor of the Valley of Virginia (trending southwest–northeast), the town is surrounded by agricultural lands interspersed with clumps of woodland. The rugged southwest end of Walker Mountain is one mile to the northwest and Little Mountain four miles farther; the Iron Mountains define the opposite side of the Valley about seven miles to the southeast. On May 28, 2013, the "Town Square" was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Glade Spring Commercial Historic District includes twenty-four primary resources and two secondary resources. Of the twenty-four primary resources, twenty-one are contributing and three are non-contributing to the eligibility of the historic district. Primary resources include sixteen commercial buildings (only three of which are noncontributing), one warehouse, one bank, one office building, one hotel, one meeting hall, one town hall, one post office, and one multiple dwelling. Secondary resources consist of one walkway and one shed (both contributing).

Glade Spring is a town in Washington County, Virginia, United States. As of the 2020 census, Glade Spring had a population of 1,367. It is part of the Kingsport–Bristol (TN)–Bristol (VA) Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area – commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region. I-81 runs through Glade Spring. It is located at exit 29.

Blackwell is an unincorporated community in Washington County, in the U.S. state of Virginia. Crabtree-Blackwell Farm was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Crabtree–Blackwell Farm is a historic farm located near Blackwell, Washington County, Virginia. The main house is a "saddlebag" type building with 2 1/2-story pens connected by a central limestone rubble chimney stack. The remaining Appalachian vernacular contributing resources are a spring house or milkhouse and log hay barn. The farm is representative of mountain folk culture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Emory is a census-designated place (CDP) in Washington County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,237 at the 2020 census down from 1,251 at the 2010 census. The community is named for and is the location of Emory and Henry University. It is part of the Kingsport-Bristol-Bristol, TN-VA MSA, which is a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area – commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region. The Emory post office was established in 1847.

It was built in 1960 as a result of the consolidation of Glade Spring High School and Meadowview High School and named after Founding Father Patrick Henry. The school is located on a 32 acre campus in Glade Spring, Virginia. .
