Headley, East Hampshire

Headley Grange is a former workhouse in Headley, Hampshire, England. It is a Grade II listed historic building. It is best known for its use as a recording and rehearsal venue in the 1960s and 1970s, by acts including Led Zeppelin, Genesis and Help Yourself.

Headley Water Mill is a water mill used for the milling of flour and situated near the village of Headley on the outskirts of the village of Lindford in the east of the English county of Hampshire. It is likely that there was a mill on this site in 1086 at the time of the Domesday Book. The west end of the current mill is considered to date from the 16th Century, whilst the central section is older. The mill is powered by the south branch of upper reaches of the River Wey and is the last commercially productive water mill in Hampshire. The mill with its adjoining house is a Grade II listed building.The mill has four pairs of stones, three for grinding flour and one for grinding barley or oats for animal feed. Two pairs of stones can be driven by the breast shot wheel at any one time.

The village began with a few buildings in the 1870s and became a thriving community that in the 20th century outgrew the parish centre of Headley. Headley Down is 36 miles (58 km) south west of London and 1 mile (1.6 km) east of Headley village centre. Nearby are the villages of Grayshott to the east and Churt to the north.

The Longmoor Military Railway (LMR) was a British military railway in Hampshire that was built by the Royal Engineers from 1903 to train soldiers on railway construction and operations. The railway ceased operation on 31 October 1969.

Sleaford is at the edge of Broxhead Common, a part of the belt of heathland on the Surrey-Hampshire border from Berkshire to West Sussex, which the British Army found attractive for training. There are numerous military colleges, camps and training grounds in the region which extends in a zone southwards from Windsor, through Camberley, Frimley and Aldershot to Bordon (near Sleaford), Woolmer and Longmoor Military Camp (grid reference SU795310). The last two were set up to train engineers to run railways, a very important skill in the Great War period.
