Roundwood Colliery

Aldwarke Junction at Parkgate near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England is a major railway junction. It was constructed in 1965 as a part of the Sheffield district rail rationalisation plan.

Parkgate and Aldwarke railway station was a railway station situated in Parkgate a district of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England on the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway company's line between Rotherham Road and Kilnhurst Central. The station, opened in July 1873, was originally known as "Aldwarke", taking its name from the local manor house nearby which it served along with 8 or 9 servants cottages and a small farmstead. The principal reason for the building of the station, however, was its close proximity to two local collieries, Aldwarke Main and Roundwood. The stopping passenger service fitted in with the requirements of the shift workers at collieries and with many workers living in Rotherham it was recorded that over 100 men would arrive at the station for the early shift alone. The station was built in the M.S.& L.R. "Double Pavilion" style with the main buildings on the Doncaster-bound platform and a waiting shelter on the other. The station also had the only wall drinking-fountain on the line, a feature of many M.S.& L.R. rebuilt stations. The station facilities included a small goods yard with two sidings and a carriage and cattle dock. The station was closed to passengers on 29 October 1951. The access to the station, its sidings and both Aldwarke and Roundwood collieries was controlled by a signal box, named Aldwarke Main, situated some 100 yards on the Doncaster side of the station.

Aldwarke Main Colliery was a coal mine sunk in the Don Valley, near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England.

Parkgate and Rawmarsh railway station, originally named Rawmarsh was situated in Parkgate, adjacent to the Park Gate Iron and Steel Company's works. It served the communities of Parkgate and Rawmarsh, in South Yorkshire, England. The station was situated on the former North Midland Railway between Kilnhurst West and Rotherham Masborough. On 19 November 1926, a private owner wagon disintegrated, derailing the train that it was part of. A signal post was partially brought down, obstructing an adjacent line. An express passenger train had the sides of its carriages ripped open by the signal post. Eleven people were killed.The station was closed, along with all the others on the line, except for Rotherham Masborough on 1 January 1968. The last ticket to be issued, as a souvenir, was lettered L.M.S.R., 20 years after that company's demise. The station and the adjoining steel works, together with other locations in the Rotherham area, were featured in the 1958 film Tread Softly Stranger starring Diana Dors. Diana Dors's co-star George Baker is seen arriving at platform 1 of "Rawborough" station.

Dalton is a civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. Dalton is situated 162 miles (260.7 km) north from London and is 2 miles (3.2 km) north-east from the centre of Rotherham town centre. The population of the parish as taken at the 2011 Census was 10,292. The parish includes the communities of Brecks, Dalton Brook, Dalton Foljambe, Dalton Magna, Dalton Parva, Flanderwell, Sunnyside and Woodlaithes.

The Roman Rig (also known as Roman Ridge, Scotland Balk, Barber Balk, Devil's Bank or Danes Bank) is the name given to a series of earthworks in the north of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. They are believed to originally have formed a single Dyke running from near Wincobank in Sheffield to Mexborough. Its purpose and date of construction are unknown. Formerly thought to have been a Roman road, modern archaeologists think that it was built either in the 1st century AD by the Brigantian tribes as a defence against the Roman invasion of Britain, or after the 5th century to defend the kingdom of Elmet from the Angles. The southernmost end of the dyke is thought to have been close to Lady's Bridge at the River Don in Sheffield, but today it only becomes visible close to the Iron Age fort at Wincobank. The dyke continues in a north-easterly direction following the Don Valley to Kimberworth in Rotherham where it splits into two branches that continue roughly parallel to each other in a sweep starting to the north-east and turning east. The southern branch passes through Greasbrough, intersecting the River Don just south of Swinton at Kilnhurst. The northern branch passes close to another Iron Age fort at Scholes Coppice and runs to the north of Swinton, meeting the River Don at Mexborough. Part of the western end of the ridge was used in the Middle Ages to demarcate the boundary of Ecclesfield and Sheffield. This western part parallels the Don, and a report of 1891 in the Sheffield Independent stated that it had formerly run as far west as Bridgehouses. Part of the northern branch formed the boundary between Wath-on-Dearne on the one side and Rawmarsh and Swinton on the other.

The South Yorkshire Transport Museum (SYTM) is a transport museum of South Yorkshire and surrounding areas in the United Kingdom. It was formerly known as the Sheffield Bus Museum Founded in the 1960, STYM is located in Aldwarke in Rotherham. STYM also features buses, the lower deck of a Sheffield Tramway tramcar, a tractor, a lorry, milk floats and an extensive array of bicycles plus static displays of models and memorabilia.

Aldwarke is an industrial area in South Yorkshire, England. It is in the Eastern suburbs of Rotherham. Aldwarke is east of the neighbouring suburb of Parkgate and 1.9 miles (3.1 km) north-east of Rotherham town centre. There is a large steelworks factory in the immediate area. Aldwarke Lock is on the Don Navigation Canal, which runs parallel to the River Don.

Parkgate is a suburb of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. It has since been consumed by its neighbour, Rawmarsh and is in the ward of Rawmarsh from which it has been indistinguishable since the early 20th century.

Thrybergh Junction was a junction on the South Yorkshire Railway, Mexborough to Rotherham line situated about 1 mile south of Kilnhurst Central. The junction was originally controlled by a Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway signal box of the earliest design, almost square with a hipped roof built on stilts. The junction was originally known as Thrybergh Hall Junction and served the line to Kilnhurst Colliery, brickworks and another colliery interest at Warren Vale.On the sinking of Silverwood Colliery this became the junction for the Silverwood Branch, a short curve which joined the Great Central to John Brown's Private Railway, a line which linked the colliery to a riverside boat staithe and John Browns other colliery interests in the Parkgate area. The M.S.& L.R. signal box was always in a difficult position being built into the bank of the nearby River Don. The box, around 1920, eventually fell backwards into the river and a replacement was sought. This was found in an almost new cabin, from York Road, Doncaster, which was moved and erected on the site. By 1988, the junction still gave access to the colliery at Silverwood, and by 2020, the junction was still listed under railway mapping, but only controlling a dual line going into a single line heading towards Rotherham, some 3 miles (5 km) south.

Warren Vale Colliery was a coal mine, also known as Piccadilly Colliery, situated alongside Warren Vale Road, between Rawmarsh and Swinton, South Yorkshire, England, in the valley of the Collier Brook, which runs east, for about two miles towards Kilnhurst. Sinking of the colliery commenced in the late 1840s with production commencing towards the end of 1850. The colliery was owned by Earl Fizwilliam, and was worked by Wakefield–based agents J. & J. Charlesworth & Company. Coal was worked from two seams, the 5 ft. seam was worked at a depth of 90 yards, the 9 ft. seam being found at 127 yards. These seams were connected by a shaft. The colliery was rail connected to another Charlesworth operation, Kilnhurst Colliery and so to the main line railway (The Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway, Sheffield to Doncaster line). Some small buildings are still standing on the site (2007) and the track of the railway towards Kilnhurst is now a footpath. Following closure part of the site became the works of Bessacarr Caravans.
