Also on the property are the contributing carriage house, dance studio, and garage.: 5  The house and grounds are occupied by the Save the Dunes offices and Barker Woods Nature Preserve, which is managed by Shirley Heinze Land Trust. Pinhook Bog is a unique bog in Indiana that has been designated a National Natural Landmark. It is part of Indiana Dunes National Park, an area that many citizens, scientists, and politicians fought hard to preserve. Its sister bog, Volo Bog, is located nearby. The bog contains a large variety of plants, including insect eating plants, tamarack trees, stands of blueberry bushes, and floating mats of sphagnum moss. Pinhook Bog is about 580 acres (2.3 km2), a quarter of which is a floating mat of sphagnum peat moss. A "moat" separates the bog from the uplands.

Carroll Avenue is a railway station in Michigan City, Indiana, serving the South Shore Line commuter rail line. For reasons of road access and parking, it, rather than the 11th Street station (also located in Michigan City but in the middle of a public street), is the city's primary commuter station for South Shore Line service. Although Carroll Avenue is not the eastern terminus of the South Shore Line, most trains terminate or start at this station. The coach yard is located here, as well as NICTD's headquarters. In June 2009, NICTD officials announced their intention to close this station, on an unspecified future date, as part of their plan to revamp the street-running section of the line on 10th and 11th streets within Michigan City. The new alignment is slated for completion in May 2024.

11th Street station is a train station in the central city neighborhood of Michigan City, Indiana. It serves the South Shore Line commuter rail line and is one of two active stations in Michigan City, the other being Carroll Avenue station. It is located adjacent to the location of the historic 11th Street station of the former Chicago, South Shore and South Bend Railroad station (now demolished), which operated the station from 1927 until 1987. Prior to the May 2021 closure, the station was composed of a passenger shelter and a sign on the northwest corner of East 11th Street and Pine Street; boarding and alighting was done from the street itself. A more modern station with two tracks and high-level platforms opened in October 2023.

The district encompasses 215 contributing buildings and 1 contributing structure in a predominantly residential section of Michigan City. It developed between about 1860 and 1963, and includes examples of Italianate, Greek Revival, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Bungalow / American Craftsman style architecture. Notable buildings include the A.J. Henry House (1904, 1908), Kubik Doctors Office (1953), Manny House (1902), Haskell-Boyd House (1875, c. 1917), Moritz House (1911), Zorn Brewey (c. 1877), Petti Grocery (c. 1900), Luchtman Building (c. 1900), Dr. Ginther House (1940), Sherman Apartment Building (1921), First Baptist Church (1914), the Public Library (1896-1897), and the Adventist Church - Christian Science Church (c. 1860).It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
