It sits on a brick foundation and has a hipped roof with hipped dormer and has a modified American Foursquare plan. Also on the property are the contributing carriage house, dance studio, and garage.: 5  The house and grounds are occupied by the Save the Dunes offices and Barker Woods Nature Preserve, which is managed by Shirley Heinze Land Trust. The district is named for the Haskell and Barker manufacturing company. It developed between about 1860 and 1960, and includes examples of Italianate, Gothic Revival, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, and Bungalow / American Craftsman style architecture. Located in the district are the separately listed John H. Barker Mansion and First Congregational Church of Michigan City. Other notable buildings include the St. Stanislaus Koska Church (1922-1926), Rectory (1938), and Convent (1938), Consumer Service Company (1922), Michigan City School of Fine Arts (1908), Gilmore-Gardner Building (1925), Porter-Carrigan House (1895), Hutchinson House (1875), St Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church (1868) and Convent (1905), and Hartke House (c. 1860).It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

11th Street station is a train station in the central city neighborhood of Michigan City, Indiana. It serves the South Shore Line commuter rail line and is one of two active stations in Michigan City, the other being Carroll Avenue station. It is located adjacent to the location of the historic 11th Street station of the former Chicago, South Shore and South Bend Railroad station (now demolished), which operated the station from 1927 until 1987. Prior to the May 2021 closure, the station was composed of a passenger shelter and a sign on the northwest corner of East 11th Street and Pine Street; boarding and alighting was done from the street itself. A more modern station with two tracks and high-level platforms opened in October 2023.

Located in the district is the separately listed Michigan City Post Office (1909-1910). First Congregational Church of Michigan City is a historic Congregational church building at 531 Washington Street in Michigan City, LaPorte County, Indiana. The church building was built in 1880-1881 and constructed in a Romanesque, Tudor Revival style. It was rebuilt in 1908-1909 following a fire. It is the second oldest church building in Michigan City.: 5 It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. It is located in the Haskell and Barker Historic District.

It is one of Northwest Indiana's most popular shopping centers, receiving an estimated one million visitors annually as of 2017. The mall is located in Michigan City's downtown area. It is designed to resemble a seaside village, playing off of its proximity to Lake Michigan.

Michigan City Post Office is a historic post office building located at Michigan City, LaPorte County, Indiana. It was designed by the Office of the Supervising Architect under James Knox Taylor and built in 1909. It is a one-story, Georgian Revival style brick and limestone building. It has a hipped roof behind a balustraded parapet and basement. A rear addition was built in 1926, and expanded in 1963. It housed a post office until 1973.: 5 It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. It is located in the Franklin Street Commercial Historic District.

Willard Avenue was a South Shore Line flag stop located at the corner of Willard Avenue and 10th Street in Michigan City, Indiana. The station opened prior to 1937 and closed on July 5, 1994, as part of an NICTD service revision which also saw the closure of Ambridge, Kemil Road, LaLumiere, Rolling Prairie, and New Carlisle.
