It developed between about 1875 and 1955, and includes examples of Italianate, Gothic Revival, Queen Anne, Classical Revival, and Tudor Revival style architecture. Located in the district is the separately listed Michigan City Post Office (1909-1910). Other notable buildings include the Staiger House (c. 1908), Earl House (c. 1890, 1917), M & M Diner (1955), Zorn Building (1907), St. Paul's Lutheran Church (1876) and rectory (1888), First Federal Savings Bank (c. 1950), Aicher Block (1914), Brinkman Building (c. 1917), Trinity Episcopal Church (1889), Merchants National Bank Building (1926), Ledbetter Building (1908), Rodenbeck Saloon (c. 1894), First Methodist Episcopal Church (1922), Barker Hall (1929), Masonic Temple (1922-1923), and the Salvation Army Building (1925).It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

It developed between about 1860 and 1960, and includes examples of Italianate, Gothic Revival, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, and Bungalow / American Craftsman style architecture. Located in the district are the separately listed John H. Barker Mansion and First Congregational Church of Michigan City. Other notable buildings include the St. Stanislaus Koska Church (1922-1926), Rectory (1938), and Convent (1938), Consumer Service Company (1922), Michigan City School of Fine Arts (1908), Gilmore-Gardner Building (1925), Porter-Carrigan House (1895), Hutchinson House (1875), St Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church (1868) and Convent (1905), and Hartke House (c. 1860).It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

Michigan City Post Office is a historic post office building located at Michigan City, LaPorte County, Indiana. It was designed by the Office of the Supervising Architect under James Knox Taylor and built in 1909. It is a one-story, Georgian Revival style brick and limestone building. It has a hipped roof behind a balustraded parapet and basement. A rear addition was built in 1926, and expanded in 1963. It housed a post office until 1973.: 5 It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. It is located in the Franklin Street Commercial Historic District.

First Congregational Church of Michigan City is a historic Congregational church building at 531 Washington Street in Michigan City, LaPorte County, Indiana. The church building was built in 1880-1881 and constructed in a Romanesque, Tudor Revival style. It was rebuilt in 1908-1909 following a fire. It is the second oldest church building in Michigan City.: 5 It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. It is located in the Haskell and Barker Historic District.

The Michigan City Public Library is a 35,000-square-foot (3,300 m2) one level facility located in Michigan City, Indiana. It was designed by the world-renowned architect Helmut Jahn. Jahn designed the building while working for the Chicago architecture firm C.F. Murphy, which later would become Jahn Architects. The design began in 1974 and the construction was completed in 1977.

It is designed to resemble a seaside village, playing off of its proximity to Lake Michigan.

Michigan City station was a train station in Michigan City, Indiana served by Amtrak, the national railroad passenger system. It was served by two eastbound and one westbound Wolverine train at the time of closure; other Wolverine and Blue Water trains did not stop. The station had a platform shelter near the former prairie-style Michigan Central Railroad depot dating from 1915, which is now a local restaurant. That earlier station served Michigan Central Railroad, and later, New York Central passenger trains. Major NYC named trains passing through the station included the Canadian (east to Detroit and Toronto), the Chicago Mercury (east to Detroit) and the Wolverine (east to New York via Detroit and southwestern Canada, in contrast to the modern train).Service began at the new Amtrak station on April 26, 1981.: 203  The station closed effective April 4, 2022. The electric interurban South Shore Line, which operates between South Bend and Chicago, stops at 11th Street station roughly a mile to the south.
