Lake Hico
Lake Hico

Lake Hico is a cooling pond reservoir built on 16th section school land in Jackson, Mississippi, in the 1950s. Its primary purpose is to provide water for the adjacent Rex Brown Plant, which generates electricity with steam. Initially, Lake Hico was open to the public for recreation. The lake was closed to the public in the late 1960s, along with the public swimming pools in Jackson, due to racial prejudices preventing peaceful integration of public swimming holes. Lake Hico was built as a cooling lake for the Rex Brown Electric Generating complex. Part of the agreement with the Hinds County board of supervisors was to have a public recreation lake and a lake for the intake and the exhaust of water for cooling for the generators. Thus the two lakes. It was originally built as a fuel oil based generating system but was later converted to natural gas when oil got so expensive in the 1970’s. The reason why it was finally closed to the public was 1- the Barnett Reservoir opened and most people went there. 2-the liability costs to MP&L skyrocketed after there was a couple of drownings. Even though it was coincidental at the time, integration was not the reason for the closing. Later some property on Watkins Drive was donated for a park but eventually closed due to the high costs of maintaining it when the park was constantly being destroyed and used for nefarious purposes i.e. drug activity. The Rex Brown plant was then mothballed and just recently totally dismantled. Water is supplied to Lake Hico by a 5 miles (8.0 km) long pipeline from the Pearl River. The vast majority of water supply to keep the lake full comes from the pipeline. Lake Hico is near the headwaters of Eubanks Creek, but the creek does not flow through the lake. Hico is an abbreviation for Hinds County, the county in which the lake is situated. The lake is leased to Entergy, the operator of the Rex Brown Plant, by its owner, the State of Mississippi via its trust for 16th section lands. The lease is overseen by Mississippi's Secretary of State, Entergy pays $258,000 per year for the lease on Lake Hico. Lake Hico covers over 500 ares (540,000 sq ft), including a 100+- acre island. The island divides the warmed water coming out of the plant from the cooler main lake. The island has a concrete boat ramp. The lake was home to the Jackson Yacht Club, until the much larger Ross Barnett Reservoir was built in early 1960s. Lake Hico is encircled completely by a six-foot chain-link fence with "no trespassing" signs. The lake is adjoined on the northeast by a city park, however the fence encircling the lake separates the two.

Northpark Mall (Mississippi)
Northpark Mall (Mississippi)

Northpark is a two-level enclosed shopping mall located on County Line Road in Ridgeland, Mississippi, United States. It is managed and co-owned by Pacific Retail Capital Partners. Mississippi’s premier indoor shopping destination, Northpark is home to more than 120 in-demand stores and specialty shops. A community hub and destination, Northpark recently completed a multi-million dollar redevelopment fusing Southern charm with modern reinvention. Conveniently located less than one mile east of I-55 at the intersection of County Line Road and Wheatley Street, Northpark features Dillard’s, JCPenney, Belk, H&M, Victoria’s Secret, Windsor, Pac Sun, and Buckle as well as more than 120 other retailers. 12 dining options range from The Med Grille to Steak Escape, Stir Fry 88, Kelly’s Cajun Grill, Chick-fil-A, and more. The mall officially opened on September 12, 1984 with four anchors — Jackson-based McRae's, Gayfers, D.H. Holmes, and JCPenney. The mall also has a cinema located in the back of the mall, originally a 10-screen operation, which later expanded to a 14-screen state-of-the-art setup under Regal Entertainment Group's United Artists Theatres brand, but was sold in September 2018 and closed in early 2019. The cinema reopened in 2020 after extensive renovations with B&B Theatres. The anchor stores currently are JCPenney, 2 Dillard's stores, and Belk. The mall was built by Cadillac Fairview, who sold it to Mills Corporation in 2003.Northpark's initial success took most of the remaining business from the struggling Jackson Mall, south of the Madison-Hinds county line in North Jackson, which had opened in 1969 with three anchors. JCPenney and Gayfers were two, both relocating to Northpark in 1985, while Woolco closed prior to Northpark's opening. Jackson Mall has since been redeveloped as a medical mall, providing health care for the inner city urban poor. Theories exist that the mall's success, taking away from the draw of the Metrocenter Mall in west Jackson opened just over six years earlier and considered to be the largest shopping mall in Mississippi and no great draw to replace it, greatly helped lead to the decline of south and west Jackson over the next few decades.Northpark’s current direct competitor is the Renaissance at Colony Park, an old world Mediterranean influenced lifestyle center also located in Ridgeland. When the Renaissance opened in March 2008, prominent tenants located in Northpark, including Ann Taylor Loft, Williams-Sonoma, American Eagle, Buckle, and others relocated from Northpark to the Renaissance. Northpark’s former direct competition was Metrocenter Mall, closed in 2018, and the Outlets of Mississippi in nearby Pearl just south of the city by the intersection of I-55 & I-20. This shopping center was completed in 2013. Other competitors include Dogwood Festival Market and Market Street Flowood, which are across from each other at Lakeland Drive (MS 25) and East Metro Parkway in nearby Flowood. In the midst of a volatile local market, a downturn came at Metrocenter in April 1999 when its Gayfers anchor closed due to the Dillard's buyout of Gayfers' parent company, Mercantile Stores. Another blow came in 2004 when Dillard's announced they were closing its Metrocenter location, and consolidating operations to its Northpark locations — anchor spaces at the ends of the mall's north and south wings, acquired via D.H. Holmes and Gayfers. A third anchor conversion came in March 2006, as all McRae's stores, including the stores at Northpark and Metrocenter, were rebranded by Belk. Both the McRae's and Proffitt's chains had been purchased by Belk in late 2005. Belk at Metrocenter closed in August 2009. This boosted patronage at the Northpark and Dogwood Festival Market locations.
