Wickersley is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England, situated 3 miles (5 km) from the centre of Rotherham. The area is very near to road junctions for the M1, M18 and A1(M) (passing through Bramley, Rotherham). It is home to the secondary school and sixth form, Wickersley School and Sports College.

Silverwood Colliery platform, the original, was a wooden railway platform built for John Brown's Private Railway in order to operate Paddy Mail trains from Roundwood Colliery to Silverwood Colliery to bring their workers to the new coal mine. The trains were operated by a rake of seven former Mersey Railway coaches hauled by a vacuum brake fitted locomotive, regular assisted by an additional locomotive on the front for extra power. These lasted until the 1930s when, either the workers at Silverwood had moved to new housing in Thrybergh, or were in a position to use the new "pit buses" operated by private companies and later by Rotherham Corporation. The platform was removed shortly after the last train left. The second Silverwood Colliery platform was a specially constructed railway platform built with only one passenger in mind, H. M. The Queen, when she visited the colliery on 31 July 1975. The royal party stayed overnight on the Royal Train in Silverwood Colliery Sidings before the colliery visit the following day when the platform was used for its only time. The Royal Train was hauled by Class 47 locomotive No.47172. The platform was removed shortly after the royal visit.

Silverwood Colliery was a colliery situated between Thrybergh and Ravenfield in Yorkshire, England. Originally called Dalton Main, it was renamed after a local woodland. It was owned by Dalton Main Collieries Ltd.

Wickersley School and Sports College is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form with academy status, located in Wickersley in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. The school has 2,150 pupils, aged 11–18, and 171 teachers. Wickersley also houses a resource base for Secondary Hearing Impaired Pupils, which has placed a further 14 pupils. The head teacher is now Tony Hardcastle. The school is the lead partner in Wickersley Partnership Trust, supporting Clifton and Rawmarsh Schools in Rotherham.

Thrybergh Tins platform was a short platform built alongside the Great Central and Midland Joint Railway line between Thrybergh Junction, on the Great Central Railway, Mexborough to Rotherham Central line and Silverwood Colliery, near Thrybergh. A connection was also available to the Midland Railway near Parkgate and Rawmarsh. This line never carried any timetabled passenger service. The operation of the line came under the jurisdiction of the station master at Kilnhurst Central. In 1959 at the request of the local Working Men's Clubs at Thrybergh a short platform, about 75 feet (23 m) in length, was built near the Park Lane bridge on the G.C.& M.J.R. Silverwood line to serve the "Children's Outings" - seaside day trips for members and their children which were a regular feature in the clubland calendar. The platform was known as "Thrybergh Tins", but it never had a name board to that effect. The first train to use the platform ran on 17 June 1959 taking over 1300 people from Silverwood Miners' Welfare Club to Bridlington. The platform was used on 3 or 4 occasions each year. It did not appear in the railway timetables, the trains which used the platform were shown in "Special Traffic Notices". The last trains to use the platform did so in the mid-1960s when it effectively closed around 1968 although it remained in situ until early 1972.

Whiston is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. It has a population of 5,115, reducing to 5,042 at the 2011 Census.Originally a small rural village between Sheffield and Rotherham, within the Saxon "Shire of Hallun" (Hallamshire), Whiston is now a suburb of Rotherham, close to its border with Sheffield. According to A Dictionary of British Place-Names, the name Whiston comes from two Old English words wite and stan – meaning "The whitestone" which is likely to be in reference to a nearby quarry where large amounts of white stone were once mined. It is referred to as Witestan, in the Domesday Book of 1086, at which time it was part of the same manor as Handsworth (Handswrde), now a suburb of Sheffield. Close to Whiston is Blue Man's Bower, a moated site and scheduled monument.Even in 1900 Whiston was still a small rural village, separated from Rotherham by open countryside. As the century progressed, and particularly after 1945, many fields were built upon and Rotherham expanded to incorporate Whiston although there is still something of a green belt separating Whiston from other local villages On 25 June 2007 part of the village was evacuated because of fears that cracks in the dam at Ulley reservoir could lead to widespread flooding in the valley. The village has two cricket clubs, Whiston Parish Church CC and Whiston Forge CC. The village football team, Whiston Wildcats, play in the Sheffield and District league. They are in the A division due to a B division promotion in the 2013/14 season. 2016 saw the founding of the village's only cycling club – Sitwell Cycling Club – a British Cycling affiliated club for all ages. The club was crowned Rotherham Advertiser's Sports Club of the Year in 2018. 2019 saw the club's membership increase to over 150 members, making them the largest club in Rotherham. The club also started under 12s coaching, gaining British Cycling Go-Ride status in October of the same year.

Dalton is a civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. Dalton is situated 162 miles (260.7 km) north from London and is 2 miles (3.2 km) north-east from the centre of Rotherham town centre. The population of the parish as taken at the 2011 Census was 10,292. The parish includes the communities of Brecks, Dalton Brook, Dalton Foljambe, Dalton Magna, Dalton Parva, Flanderwell, Sunnyside and Woodlaithes.

Broom (historically sometimes spelled "Broome") is a village in South Yorkshire, England and is located in the former parish of Whiston about 1 mile (2 km) southeast of Rotherham. Broom sits on top of a former Roman fortification and was the site of a Saxon trading town. The village currently has a population of 900. The town supports three pubs, a football club, Broom United, and numerous other small businesses.

Thrybergh Academy is a coeducational secondary school located in Thrybergh, South Yorkshire, England. The school was founded as a secondary modern school in the 1950s, with its own buildings being opened in 1956. It later became a comprehensive school.

Morthen is a hamlet in South Yorkshire in England, lying between Brampton-en-le-Morthen and Laughton-en-le-Morthen. The population of the hamlet as taken at the 2011 Census was less than 100. Details are included in the civil parish of Thurcroft. Morthen lay in the Viking district also named "Morthen". This had already ceased to function by the Norman Conquest, but gave its name to several villages in the area. In the early Mediaeval period, Aston and Dinnington were also described as being "-in-Morthen".The name of the hamlet originates in the Old Norse for "moorland assembly". The assembly probably met in a meadow lying next to the ridge running between Upper Whiston and the hamlet of Morthen.However, another plausible source for the name of Morthen is offered in the book "Athelstan" by Paul Hill, in which he states Morthen means "Slaughter Field". Given the proximity of a nearby stump of a Saxon cross, which is said by Guy Points in his "Yorkshire. A Gazetteer of Anglo Saxon and Viking Sites" to commemorate the epic Battle of Brunanburgh in 937 would tie the cross and the name together.

Herringthorpe Stadium is an athletics stadium in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. It contains a 400m, Olympic-class running track and grass pitch, as well as facilities for other Olympic disciplines such as discus nets. The stadium was the area's premier athletics venue until the English Institute of Sport opened in Sheffield in 2004. Rotherham Harriers athletics club are based at the stadium, which is the home ground of Rugby League Conference side Rotherham Giants, and it has also hosted Rotherham Titans rugby union games and school competitions.
