Wickersley School and Sports College

Wickersley is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England, situated 3 miles (5 km) from the centre of Rotherham. The area is very near to road junctions for the M1, M18 and A1(M) (passing through Bramley, Rotherham). It is home to the secondary school and sixth form, Wickersley School and Sports College.

Bramley is a village and civil parish of the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. The village is situated approximately 4 miles (6 km) from central Rotherham and 8 miles (13 km) from Sheffield city centre, both to the west south-west. Bramley is bordered by the urban development of Sunnyside conjoined to the village of Wickersley to the south, and the village of Ravenfield to the north. To the east, beyond Junction 1 of the M18, are the civil parishes of Hellaby (formerly part of Bramley) and Maltby.

Silverwood Colliery was a colliery situated between Thrybergh and Ravenfield in Yorkshire, England. Originally called Dalton Main, it was renamed after a local woodland. It was owned by Dalton Main Collieries Ltd.

Silverwood Colliery platform, the original, was a wooden railway platform built for John Brown's Private Railway in order to operate Paddy Mail trains from Roundwood Colliery to Silverwood Colliery to bring their workers to the new coal mine. The trains were operated by a rake of seven former Mersey Railway coaches hauled by a vacuum brake fitted locomotive, regular assisted by an additional locomotive on the front for extra power. These lasted until the 1930s when, either the workers at Silverwood had moved to new housing in Thrybergh, or were in a position to use the new "pit buses" operated by private companies and later by Rotherham Corporation. The platform was removed shortly after the last train left. The second Silverwood Colliery platform was a specially constructed railway platform built with only one passenger in mind, H. M. The Queen, when she visited the colliery on 31 July 1975. The royal party stayed overnight on the Royal Train in Silverwood Colliery Sidings before the colliery visit the following day when the platform was used for its only time. The Royal Train was hauled by Class 47 locomotive No.47172. The platform was removed shortly after the royal visit.

Brecks is a suburb of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. It is situated roughly 2 miles from central Rotherham. Brecks borders the suburb Wickersley. The A631 road, here called Bawtry Road, forms the southern boundary of the built-up area.

Hellaby is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 825. It is situated 5 miles (8.0 km) east from the centre of Rotherham and forms a continuous urban area with Maltby, separated from the rest of Rotherham by Junction 1 (Bramley Interchange) of the M18. It is situated by Hellaby Brook and, whilst signposted as "Hellaby Village", the parish has no school, church or post office.

Ravenfield is a small village and civil parish in South Yorkshire, England. It is located in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, 3.3 miles (5.3 km) east of the town of Rotherham. The older part is a former farming village and over recent years has become a pretty rural community; it has been particularly successful in the Britain in Bloom competitions. It has a population of 2,018, increasing to 2,828 at the 2011 census. The old village is situated in a fold in the hills just below the 1756 church of St. James by John Carr, close to the site of the John Carr's now demolished Ravenfield Hall and adjacent to Ravenfield Park. The estate was sold in 1920 when the park was broken into separate farms. Many of the old barns have been demolished or converted into homes. In 1907 the railway came to Ravenfield with a line being built to link Silverwood colliery to the main line and on to Bawtry. Ravenfield old Village Garden Society was created in 1987 with the aim of improving the local environment. In the early days the village lacked colour and there were very few publicly planted areas. Most of the gardens were very well tended and colourful. It soon became apparent that entering the Yorkshire in Bloom competition led to greater awareness of the potential and diversity of the local environment and a concerted effort has been made ever since to improve it following the RHS guidelines on community, environment, sustainability and horticulture. The village has represented Yorkshire in the national Britain in Bloom competition winning medals on three occasions. In 2008 the village won a gold medal as well as best in category.

Thurcroft Colliery was a coal mine situated in the village of Thurcroft, near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. In 1902, the Rother Vale Colliery Company leased the rights to work coal from below the Thurcroft Estates which were owned by Messrs. Marrian (of Sharrow Hall, Sheffield) and Binns, but it was not until 7 years later that they began sinking a shaft. Problems were encountered within a year when they found water which needed to be pumped from the workings and caused a delay in reaching the coal seam. The Barnsley seam, which is of good quality coal had been thrown out of its normal alignment and its expected position by a geological fault which was not discovered until the shaft was sunk. Delays meant that no coal was produced until 1913. From 1913, the company began to build housing for the miners, designed by Rotherham architect James Knight. The colliery was nationalized in 1947, becoming part of the National Coal Board. It was closed on 6 December 1991.

Morthen is a hamlet in South Yorkshire in England, lying between Brampton-en-le-Morthen and Laughton-en-le-Morthen. The population of the hamlet as taken at the 2011 Census was less than 100. Details are included in the civil parish of Thurcroft. Morthen lay in the Viking district also named "Morthen". This had already ceased to function by the Norman Conquest, but gave its name to several villages in the area. In the early Mediaeval period, Aston and Dinnington were also described as being "-in-Morthen".The name of the hamlet originates in the Old Norse for "moorland assembly". The assembly probably met in a meadow lying next to the ridge running between Upper Whiston and the hamlet of Morthen.However, another plausible source for the name of Morthen is offered in the book "Athelstan" by Paul Hill, in which he states Morthen means "Slaughter Field". Given the proximity of a nearby stump of a Saxon cross, which is said by Guy Points in his "Yorkshire. A Gazetteer of Anglo Saxon and Viking Sites" to commemorate the epic Battle of Brunanburgh in 937 would tie the cross and the name together.

Thurcroft is a village and civil parish situated south-east of Rotherham in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. From 1902 to 1991, it was a mining community. It has a population of 5,296, increasing to 6,900 at the 2011 Census.

Thrybergh Academy is a coeducational secondary school located in Thrybergh, South Yorkshire, England. The school was founded as a secondary modern school in the 1950s, with its own buildings being opened in 1956. It later became a comprehensive school.
