Stoke Canon

Huxham is a hamlet and civil parish in the county of Devon, England and the district of East Devon and lies about 3 miles from Exeter. The parish has an area of about 800 acres and is surrounded, clockwise from the north, by Rewe, Poltimore, Exeter and Stoke Canon. It is too small to have a parish council and instead has a parish meeting. It was formerly part of the Wonford Hundred and gave its name to a family who possessed the manor from the reign of Henry II to that of Edward III. The manor was then held by the Bampfylde family of Poltimore.

The River Culm flows through the Devon Redlands in Devon, England and is the longest tributary of the River Exe. It rises in the Blackdown Hills at a spring near RAF Culmhead in Somerset, and flows west through Hemyock, then Culmstock (in the Culm Valley) to Uffculme. The river turns south, through Cullompton (and alongside the M5 motorway), skirting the northern boundary of Killerton Park to join the River Exe on the north-western outskirts of Exeter. The name of the river is thought to mean 'knot' or 'tie', in reference to the river's twists and loops.

Rewe is a village and civil parish in the county of Devon in England. It lies on the river Culm, 5 miles (8 km) north of the city of Exeter and 9 miles (14 km) south of the town of Tiverton. Rewe is a linear village, with most of its buildings lying along the A396 road about 1 mile (1.6 km) north of the larger village of Stoke Canon. The Reading to Plymouth railway line also passes through the village, but there has never been a station here; the nearest operating station (as of 2009) is Exeter St Davids. Before its closure, Stoke Canon station was the nearest. The parish church is the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, built around 1450 in the Perpendicular Gothic style. The Church also contains the crest of Jane Seymour's family. The hamlet of Up Exe (or Upexe) lies close to the River Exe about 2 miles (3 km) north of the village of Rewe and is included in Rewe civil parish, although it is closer to Silverton. Up Exe Halt railway station was on the Exe Valley Railway Line, which closed in 1963.

Nether Exe or Netherexe is a very small village and civil parish in Devon, England. It lies near the River Exe, as its name suggests, about 5 miles (8 km) north of Exeter. The Church of St John the Baptist is a small stone church set amidst fields close to the river south-west of the present day village, though there was once a manor house nearby. The church is a Grade I listed building built in the late 15th century. Services are still held in the church, if infrequently.The hamlet of Netherexe gives its name to the "Netherexe Parishes", a group of 8 Anglican parishes with 11 churches under the pastoral care of a single vicar; though the smallest of them all, Netherexe is almost at the geographical centre of the group. Richard de Lucy, of Devon, held part of Netherexe, Hayridge Hundred, Devon in 1301.

Brampford Speke ( BRAM-fərdz-beek) is a small village in Devon, 4 miles (6 km) to the north of Exeter. The population is 419. It is located on red sandstone cliffs overlooking the river Exe. Its sister village of Upton Pyne lies to its southwest, and Stoke Canon is across the river, to the east. To the south is the hamlet of Cowley with its chapel of ease, which was formerly part of the ecclesiastical parish of Brampford Speke. Brampford Speke has a Church of England parish church dedicated to St Peter. There is a primary school in the heart of the village near the river Exe, which was built as a national school in 1867. A baptist chapel was built near the school in 1894. The village also has a corner shop/tea room and a local pub, the Agricultural Inn (formerly the Lazy Toad). The village contains a number of fine houses, including the former landowner's Brampford House in the centre of the village and some traditional cob and thatch cottages and farmhouses.

St James School is a mixed secondary school located in Exeter in the English county of Devon.Previously a foundation school administered by Devon County Council, in May 2016 St James School was converted to academy status. The school is now part of the Ted Wragg Trust, but continues to coordinate with Devon County Council for admissions. The school moved into new buildings in February 2006.St James School offers GCSEs and OCR Nationals as programmes of study for pupils. The school also has specialisms in mathematics and computing.

Poltimore is a village, civil parish and former manor in the East Devon district, in the county of Devon, England. It lies approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) northeast of Exeter. The parish consisted of 122 households and a population of 297 people during the 2011 census. The parish also includes the hamlet of Ratsloe.

Polsloe Priory, also known as St Katherine's Priory, was a Benedictine priory for women (a nunnery) in Devon, England. It was founded in around 1159 on land to the east of Exeter, on a site that is now part of the city's suburb of Polsloe. At the time it was the only religious house for women in Devon, but two others were founded later: at Cornworthy and Canonsleigh Abbey. The first prioress of whom any record survives was Avelina in 1218. Amongst the holdings of the priory was the Church of St Mary, Marston Magna in Somerset.In common with most other Catholic institutions, it was dissolved by Henry VIII, in 1539, even though it had paid a fine of £400 for exemption from the Suppression of Religious Houses Act 1535. At dissolution it had 14 nuns, including the prioress and subprioress.Most of the buildings have been demolished, but one remains, built of the local red sandstone and believed to date from around 1320. English Heritage have designated it a Grade II* listed building. As of 2016 it is used by the local community association for occasional events, having passed from private to City Council hands in 1934.

The Battle of Pinhoe took place between the Danes and the men of Devon and Somerset at Pinhoe, Devon.

Stoke Hill is a large hill rising to the north of Exeter in Devon, England. It is significant as the site of both an Iron Age hill fort and a later Roman signal station. The hill fort is situated slightly below and northeast of the Roman signal station, putting it in a better position to have sight of a number of other hill forts simultaneously. It is at an elevation of approximately 145 metres (476 ft) above sea level. The signal station is at the highest point of the hill, 159 metres (522 ft) above sea level. Stoke Hill is also the name of a northern suburb of Exeter, at grid reference SX934943.

Exmouth Junction is the railway junction where the Exmouth branch line diverges from the London Waterloo to Exeter main line in Exeter, Devon, England. It was for many years the location for one of the largest engine sheds in the former London and South Western Railway. The sidings served the railway's concrete casting factory as well as a goods yard.
