Apedale

Apedale Hall was a manor house near Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire. The seat of the Heathcote family, it was rebuilt in 1826 in the Elizabethan style by the Staffordshire industrialist Richard Edensor Heathcote (1780–1850), but was demolished in 1934 due to subsidence from the coal mines underneath. Oswald Mosley, British politician, known principally as the founder of the British Union of Fascists (BUF) lived there for a time in the early 20th century with his divorced mother, Katharine Maud Edwards-Heathcote (1874–1950), and his paternal grandfather Sir Oswald Mosley, 4th Baronet, before its demolition.

Apedale Community Country Park is a 454-acre (184 ha) country park in the borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, England. The park is unusual for the area as it was previously an opencast mine. The area has a long history of mining, with the nearby former collieries at Silverdale and Holditch also having been redeveloped for other uses. The park is considered by administration as a form of compensation to the residents of the area for the large amount of development that has taken place over recent years. The shallow mine at Holditch was redeveloped into a business park and an industrial estate, which led to significant capital gains for Staffordshire County Council. The amelioration of the park was part paid for out of these receipts. Within the park is the Apedale Heritage Centre. The adjoining Moseley Railway Trust is currently running the first phase of the 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge Apedale Valley Light Railway extending further into the parkland. There is a series of tracks, waymarked routes and self-guided trails. The country park is also the home of Newcastle Countryside Project and is bordered by the communities of Silverdale, Chesterton, Knutton and Cross Heath.

Alsagers Bank is a village in the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire. Population details at the 2011 census can be found under Audley Rural. It has a pub, The Gresley Arms, St John's Church (Church of England), a primary school, and a football club. There is a regular bus service through the village between Newcastle-under-Lyme and Audley. The village bears no relationship to Alsager in Cheshire and its name is a derivation from the Alsager family who lived in the area.

Silverdale railway station was a railway station that served the village of Silverdale, Staffordshire, England. It was opened by the North Staffordshire Railway in 1863 and closed to passengers in 1964.In its later years, the station was used by staff operating trains to and from the adjacent colliery. For this purpose, a large rail loader was built.

The Apedale Heritage Centre was created at the site of Staffordshire's Apedale Mine and is run by volunteers. It is located just outside the village of Chesterton near Newcastle-under-Lyme in the Apedale Community Country Park. Attractions include mine tours and a museum which concentrates on the area's history, and industrial heritage. Opening times are 10:30 to 16:00 daily with the underground tours taking place on weekends and bank holidays. The site is also the home of the Moseley Railway Trust's collection of narrow gauge industrial locomotives. A selection of locomotives can be viewed in the heritage centre museum and the trust holds open days for the public. Work is under way to construct a separate museum and railway for the collection.

Halmerend was a ward of the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme, in Staffordshire, England. The ward covered the villages of Alsagers Bank, Balterley, Betley, Halmer End, Scot Hay and Wrinehill, and in 2011 had a population of 3,764. When it was abolished in 2018 the western part, containing Balterley, Betley and Wrinehill, became part of the new ward of Madeley & Betley; the eastern part, containing Alsagers Bank, Halmer End and Scot Hay, was combined with Audley and Bignall End to form Audley ward.

Silverdale is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire, west of Newcastle-under-Lyme. It is a self contained ward of Newcastle Borough Council returning 2 Councillors. Historically, the village was dominated by the coal industry and records indicate coal was mined in the area as long ago as the 13th century. The last colliery, Silverdale Colliery, closed in 1998. Brick-maker Ibstock also operate a large clay quarry next to the former colliery.

Crown Street Halt railway station (also known as Silverdale (Crown Street) Halt) is a disused railway station in Staffordshire, England. Situated on the North Staffordshire Railway (NSR) Stoke to Market Drayton Line, this halt was opened in 1905 when the NSR introduced a railmotor service between Silverdale and Trentham as a response to competition from tram companies. Situated closer to Silverdale town centre than Silverdale station, the station remained open until 1949.

Audley and Bignall End was a ward in the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme, in the county of Staffordshire, England. It covered the villages of Audley and Bignall End. According to the 2011 Census it had a population of 5,927. In 2018 it was combined with part of Halmerend to form Audley ward.

Halmer End is a small village in the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire, neighbouring the small hamlet of Alsagers Bank and the larger village of Audley. Population details as taken in the 2011 census can be found under Audley Rural. The village is on the B5367. Historically, the village was dominated by the Coal Mining Industry, and several large coal mines were in operation in the vicinity of the village in the 19th and early 20th centuries. However, the village is remembered as being the site of the worst mining disaster in the history of the North Staffordshire Coalfield when, in 1918, 156 men and boys were killed in the Minnie Pit Disaster. Nowadays, the village remains semi-rural and residential with a school, convenience store and a Chinese takeaway.

Newcastle-under-Lyme is a constituency in northern Staffordshire created in 1354 and represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2019 by Aaron Bell of the Conservative Party. It was the last to be co-represented by a member of the Conservative Party when it was dual-member, before the 1885 general election which followed the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 coupled with the Reform Act 1884. In 1919 the local MP, Josiah Wedgwood, shifted his allegiance from the Liberal Party — the Lloyd George Coalition Liberals allying with the Conservatives — to the Labour Party and the seat elected the Labour candidate who has stood at each election for the next hundred years, a total of 29 elections in succession. Labour came close to losing the seat in 1969, 1986, 2015 and 2017, and eventually lost the seat in 2019. Its 2017 general election result was the fifth-closest result, a winning margin of 30 votes. In 2019, it was subsequently won by the Conservatives for the first time since its creation, by over 7,000 votes. Newcastle-under-Lyme is one of twelve Staffordshire seats won (held or gained) by a Conservative candidate in 2019 out of a total of twelve covering the county.

Loomer Road Stadium is a former sports stadium situated in Chesterton, Staffordshire. The building had considerable parking facilities, covered terracing and a bar with a view of the track. It had a capacity of 5,000. The stadium was constructed in the early 1970s and hosted greyhound racing until 2003, and speedway and stock cars until its closure at the end of the 2019 season.
