Ten Post is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is part of the municipality of Groningen. The village is located along the Damsterdiep and about 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) from Groningen.

It is situated close to the Damsterdiep - a channel connecting the city of Groningen to Delfzijl - on two artificial dwelling hills, known locally as 'Wierden'. As of 2021, Wirdum had a population of 365.

Zeerijp (Dutch pronunciation: [zeːˈrɛip]; Gronings: Zeeriep [zeːˈrip] or Riep) is a village north of city of Groningen. Its most striking building is its brick church for the 14th century with detached bell tower. Formerly dedicated to John the Baptist, now it is a Dutch Reformed church. Also there is a famous organ inside the church, a Faber organ. Because there are so few inhabitants, Zeerijp has no shops, but there is a primary school 'De Wilgenstee' and a cafe. Also, there is a famous mill, 'de Leeuw'. There is also a gold and silver smith, Van Hulsen. Zeerijp's most recently made the headlines when an earthquake struck the village in January 2007. Earthquakes are extremely rare in the Netherlands; this one, measuring 2.3 on the Richter magnitude scale, was a result of drilling for natural gas.

The Ommelanden (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɔməˌlɑndən]; Surrounding Lands) are the parts of Groningen province that surround Groningen city. Usually mentioned as synonym for the province in the expression Stad en Ommeland ("city and surrounding lands"). The area was Frisian-speaking, but under the influence of the Saxon city of Groningen most of the area turned to speaking Low Saxon. A reminder of the Frisian past is the Ommelanden flag which looks a lot like the Frisian provincial flag but has more and narrower stripes and more red pompeblêden (stylised heart-shaped leaves of yellow water-lily). Stedum (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈsteːdʏm]; Gronings: Steem [ˈsteɪm]) is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Eemsdelta, about 15 km (9 mi) northeast of the city of Groningen. Stedum was a separate municipality until 1990, when it merged with Loppersum.The German municipality of Hohenhameln, which includes the German village of Stedum, was twinned with the Dutch municipality of Loppersum.

The Groningen gas field is a natural gas field in Groningen province in the northeastern part of the Netherlands. With an estimated 2,740 billion cubic metres of recoverable natural gas it is the largest natural gas field in Europe and one of the largest in the world. The gas field was discovered in 1959 near Slochteren. The subsequent extraction of the natural gas became central to the energy supply in the Netherlands. Virtually all of the Netherlands was connected to Groningen gas in the following years. Revenue from natural gas production became important in the post-war development and construction of the Dutch welfare state. As of 2013, 2,057 billion cubic metres of natural gas had been extracted from the field.Gas extraction resulted in subsidence above the field. From 1991, this was also accompanied by earthquakes. This led to damage to houses and unrest among residents. It was decided to phase out gas extraction from 2014 onwards. The reinforcement operation and damage settlement as a result of the earthquakes are progressing slowly. The National Ombudsman called this a "national crisis" in 2021. In June 2023, the government announced that extraction from the field would cease by 1 October 2023. Approximately 450 billion cubic metres of gas are thought to remain in the field as of 2023.

Fivelingo or Fivelgo is a historical region and one of the Ommelanden (shires) in the province of Groningen. It was located southeast of Hunsingo, northeast of Gorecht, and northwest of Oldambt, and southwest of the Wadden Sea. Fivelingo was named after the historical river Fivel.
