Groningen (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɣroːnɪŋə(n)] ; Gronings: Grunn; West Frisian: Grinslân) is the northeasternmost province of the Netherlands. It borders on Friesland to the west, Drenthe to the south, the German state of Lower Saxony to the east, and the Wadden Sea to the north. As of February 2020, Groningen had a population of 586,309 and a total area of 2,960 km2 (1,140 sq mi). Historically the area was at different times part of Frisia, the Frankish Empire, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Dutch Republic, the precursor state of the modern Netherlands. In the 14th century, the city of Groningen became a member of the Hanseatic League. The provincial capital and the largest city in the province is the city of Groningen (231,299 inhabitants). Since 2016, René Paas has been the King's Commissioner in the province. A coalition of GroenLinks, the Labour Party, ChristianUnion, People's Party for Freedom and Democracy, Democrats 66, and Christian Democratic Appeal forms the executive branch. The province is divided into 10 municipalities. The land is mainly used for agriculture. There are seaports in Delfzijl and Eemshaven. The Groningen gas field, one of the world's largest, was discovered in 1959. The province is home to the University of Groningen and Hanze University of Applied Sciences.

Ten Post is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is part of the municipality of Groningen. The village is located along the Damsterdiep and about 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) from Groningen.

Harkstede (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦɑr(ə)ksteːdə]), also known as Haarkstee ([ˈhaː(r)ksteː]) in Gronings, is a small village in the northeastern Netherlands. It is located in Midden-Groningen, Groningen. Harkstede is located near the "Meerstad Project" of the municipality of Groningen, however it is no longer part of the project.

Slochteren (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈslɔxtərə(n)] ) is a village and former municipality with a population of 15,546 in the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. On 1 January 2018, Slochteren merged with Hoogezand-Sappemeer and Menterwolde, forming the municipality Midden-Groningen. The former municipality can be characterized as a chain of small villages dividing a mostly agricultural landscape. Having an agricultural background for at least a thousand years, the community houses for the most part commuters to nearby towns like Hoogezand, Groningen and Delfzijl. The mansion Fraeylemaborg (a small 'castle', the oldest parts of which are dated in the Middle Ages) is located in Slochteren.

Winneweer (pronounced [ˈʋɪnəʋeːr]) is a small village in the municipalities of Eemsdelta and Groningen in the Dutch province of Groningen. The village was first mentioned in 1668 as "Winne-weer, een Logijs-plaets", and refers to an inn which was located near Garrelsweer, and is nowadays a pub. The etymology is unclear.Before 1850, there was hardly any habitation in Winneweer. After 1850, industry started to settle in Winneweer. A saw mill turned into a wood factory, a dairy factory and a brickworks followed. Winneweer consists of about 50 houses.

Ten Boer (Dutch pronunciation: [tɛn ˈbuːr] (listen)) is a village and a former municipality in the northeastern Netherlands, in the province of Groningen. The municipality had a population of in 2019; the village of Ten Boer has approximately 4,600 inhabitants. In 2019, it was merged into municipality of Groningen.

Kolham is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is part of the municipality of Midden-Groningen. In 1959, natural gas was discovered at Kolham. Later, it was revealed that Groningen gas field was the largest natural gas field in Europe.

The Fraeylemaborg (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈfraːiləmaːˌbɔr(ə)x]) is a borg in the village of Slochteren in the Netherlands. At present the Fraeylemaborg is a historic house museum. The museum had 31,509 visitors in 2013.

The Ommelanden (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɔməˌlɑndən]; Surrounding Lands) are the parts of Groningen province that surround Groningen city. Usually mentioned as synonym for the province in the expression Stad en Ommeland ("city and surrounding lands"). The area was Frisian-speaking, but under the influence of the Saxon city of Groningen most of the area turned to speaking Low Saxon. A reminder of the Frisian past is the Ommelanden flag which looks a lot like the Frisian provincial flag but has more and narrower stripes and more red pompeblêden (stylised heart-shaped leaves of yellow water-lily). The area is made up of the following four quarters: Westerkwartier Hunsingo Fivelingo with Oldambt Westerwolde

The Groningen gas field is a natural gas field in Groningen province in the northeastern part of the Netherlands. With an estimated 2,740 billion cubic metres of recoverable natural gas it is the largest natural gas field in Europe and one of the largest in the world. The gas field was discovered in 1959 near Slochteren. The subsequent extraction of the natural gas became central to the energy supply in the Netherlands. Virtually all of the Netherlands was connected to Groningen gas in the following years. Revenue from natural gas production became important in the post-war development and construction of the Dutch welfare state. As of 2013, 2,057 billion cubic metres of natural gas had been extracted from the field.Gas extraction resulted in subsidence above the field. From 1991, this was also accompanied by earthquakes. This led to damage to houses and unrest among residents. It was decided to phase out gas extraction from 2014 onwards. The reinforcement operation and damage settlement as a result of the earthquakes are progressing slowly. The National Ombudsman called this a "national crisis" in 2021. In June 2023, the government announced that extraction from the field would cease by 1 October 2023. Approximately 450 billion cubic metres of gas are thought to remain in the field as of 2023.
