The Grindstone River is a 6.7-mile-long (10.8 km) river of Minnesota, a tributary of the Kettle River. Its name is derived either from the Dakota Iŋswú watpá (Small Stones River) or from the Ojibwe Zhiigwanaabikokaa-ziibi (River abundant with grind stones). Sandstone taken from near the river was used to produce sharpening stones. In Ojibwe, Hinckley (Gaa-zhiigwanaabikokaag) is named after this river.The South Fork Grindstone River rises in a wetland complex in Kroschel Township, Kanabec County, and flows south and east. The North Fork Grindstone River rises from Grindstone Lake in Dell Grove Township, Pine County, and flows south. The two forks join in Hinckley, and the main river flows generally east and empties into the Kettle River in Barry Township, Pine County. Grindstone Lake, the North Fork Grindstone River and the lower course of the Grindstone River are shown on the 1757 edition of the Mitchell Map.

The Great Hinckley Fire was a conflagration in the pine forests of the U.S. state of Minnesota in September 1894, which burned an area of at least 200,000 acres (810 km2; 310 sq mi) (perhaps more than 250,000 acres [1,000 km2; 390 sq mi]), including the town of Hinckley. The Northern Pacific Depot in Hinckley, Minnesota, United States, is a wood-framed depot built in 1895, the year after the previous depot was destroyed in the Great Hinckley Fire on September 1, 1894. The depot was built from the plans of the previous depot. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The building was originally built by the St. Paul and Duluth Railroad, which was acquired by the Northern Pacific Railway in 1900. The building had separate men's and women's waiting rooms, a freight room, a restaurant known as the "Beanery", and a stationmaster's living quarters on the second floor.Passenger train service to Hinckley station ended on January 4, 1967, when trains 65 and 66 were discontinued between the Twin Cities and Duluth.The depot is now known as the Hinckley Fire Museum. The museum interprets the history of the fire that destroyed six towns and burned over 400 square miles (1,000 km2). It also explains how the town was rebuilt and how the area shifted to agricultural use after the lumbering era ended.
