Älvsborg Fortress

The Siege of Älvsborg was a Siege of the Swedish castle of Älvsborg by a Danish army under the command of Christian IV in the summer of 1612 as part of the Kalmar War. Despite the Swedes putting up a good fight, they had to surrender in the end to the larger Danish force with the Swedish commander Olof Andersson Stråle surrendering to the Danes

The Siege of Älvsborg (Swedish: Belägringen av Älvsborg), also known as the Siege of Elfsborg (Danish: Belejringen af Elfsborg), was a siege of the Swedish fortress of Älfsborg by the Danish army under King Frederick II at the start of the Northern Seven Years' War. The siege ended in a quick Danish victory, and the Swedish commander would surrender the fort before any direct assault would be initiated.

The 4th Marine Regiment (Swedish: Älvsborgs amfibieregemente, Amf 4) is an amphibian regiment of the Swedish Amphibious Corps based in Gothenburg. Raised from Älvsborg Coastal Artillery Regiment (KA 4) in 2000 when the Swedish Amphibious Corps was formed, the 4th Marine Regiment only operated for four years before being disbanded in 2004. The regiment was reinstated on 1 October 2021.

New Älvsborg, so-called to distinguish it from the earlier fortress at Old Älvsborg, is a sea fort on the island of Kyrkogårdsholmen within the urban area of modern Gothenburg, Sweden. Situated near the mouth of the Göta River, it protected what was at the time of its construction Sweden's only access to the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Construction began in 1653, and the fortress remained in service until 1869, though it only saw significant action in one conflict, the Great Northern War.

Saltholmen is a peninsula on the southern shore of Älvsborgsfjorden in the district of Älvsborg in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was originally an island, but during the construction of the Gothenburg tram network a connection was made to the mainland. The connection has since been widened to accommodate car parking, making Saltholmen effectively a peninsula.

The Battle of Gothenburg was a Danish-Norwegian attempt to destroy the Swedish squadron in Gothenburg, which was led by Olof Strömstierna. The Danes were led by the famous Peter Tordenskjold. The Swedish land defence was led by Fredrik of Hessen, and it consisted of the land batteries Billingen and Rya Nabbe with 12 guns each, and the Älvsborg fortress, who had 400 soldiers with 90 guns. The Danish-Norwegian attack was intended as a surprise attack but failed, after the Swedes opened fire at them after they passed Älvsborg fortress. The bombardment was led as a cross-fire from the fortress and the Swedish ships - which went across the river - against Tordenskjold and his soldiers. After 5 hours of fighting, the Danes and Norwegians retreated after losing several ships.

The Volvo Museum is in Gothenburg, Sweden. It covers the development of Sweden's leading vehicle manufacturer Volvo, from the first ÖV 4 to the current cars, trucks, buses and other products. The museum also has displays of Volvo Aero and Volvo Penta products, and many other exhibits, including the joint desk of Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson from the pioneering years of the company.

Preemraff Göteborg is an oil refinery in the Swedish city of Gothenburg. Preem is the largest supplier of petroleum products in Sweden and its two refineries, Preemraff Göteborg in Gothenburg and Preemraff Lysekil in Lysekil represent 80% of Sweden's refining capacity. The Gothenburg refinery is certified according to ISO 14001. The facility produces liquefied petroleum gas, gasoline, diesel and heating oil for both the Swedish and foreign markets.Construction started in 1965 and refining started in 1967. Originally owned by BP, it was sold to OK Petroleum when BP decided to leave the Swedish market in 1991. In 1994, Sheik Mohammed Al Amoudi from Saudi Arabia bought OK Petroleum, and in 1996 changed the name to Preem Raffinaderi.The port for crude oil tankers (allowing 19 metres (62 ft) draft) is around 6 km (3.7 mi) west, from where there is a pipeline connection. Refined products are shipped from a port near the Preemraff, or by road or rail connection.

Tynnered is one of 21 boroughs in the city of Gothenburg, Sweden. It is located in the western part of the city, about 8-10 kilometres from the inner city, and it has a population of 27,787 (2010) on 29.85 square kilometres (11.53 mi2). Alike several other boroughs of the city, Tynnered has a fairly high percentage of immigrants. On January 1, 2011, Tynnered became part of the district (stadsdelsnämnd) Western Gothenburg (Västra Göteborg). In 2021 the stadsdelsnämd districts were replaced by larger stadsområde districts and Tynnered became part of South-West Gothenburg (Sydväst Göteborg).Travelling by tram from Gothenburg city centre to southern Tynnered takes about 25 minutes. The two trams that go to Tynnered are the tram routes 1 and 7, and they stop at Briljantgatan, Smaragdgatan and Opaltorget. To northern Tynnered the bus number 50 is the fastest, taking about 20 minutes from the city centre. The shopping mall Frölunda Torg is located a couple of minutes away from Tynnered when going by foot. Tynnered is also a parish, with approximately the same area. The church was built 1973.

The Rya Forest (Swedish: Rya skog) is a nature reserve in Gothenburg, Sweden. It is located on the Hisingen island, on the northern bank of the Göta River. It has an area of 17 hectares. Established in 1928, it is the oldest nature reserve in Västra Götaland County.The reserve lies in the middle of a busy industrial area, close to oil refineries and the Ryaverket sewage treatment plan. In spite of that, it displays a diverse flora and fauna, typical for a marsh forest, alder being the most common tree. The age of the trees reaches 200 years, while some of the oaks are a few centuries old. Many species of lichens, mosses and fungi have been found. In the spring, the meadows in the reserve are covered with blooming wood anemones. The forest houses rare insects, butterflies and beetles. With its many birds, such as the hawfinch, the tawny owl, and the Eurasian woodcock, it has also attracted the interest of ornithologists.

The Nordic College for Public Health (Swedish: Nordiska högskolan för folkhälsovetenskap, NHV) was a shared Nordic educational institution in Gothenburg, Sweden, which educates health personnel on Master's and Doctorate level in addition to doing broader research work. They are financed through the Swedish Department of Health and Social Security and the Nordic Council. NHV was founded in 1953, started its programmes on Master's level in 1978 and on doctorate level in 1987.In June 2013, the Nordic Council of Ministers decided to close down the university, which then ceased as an academic institution on 31 December 2014.

Ryaverket is a regional sewage treatment plant in Gothenburg, Sweden. The plant is located in southern Hisingen and treats wastewater from 797,485 people in the Gothenburg region (2020). The facility is owned by Gryaab, a municipal company owned by the municipalities whose wastewater is treated at Ryaverket. The owner municipalities are Gothenburg, Ale, Härryda, Mölndal, Kungälv, Partille, Bollebygd and Lerum. Ryaverket is the home of the world's longest mural, on 696 square meters, by Pontus Andersson.
