Noord-Beveland

Wissenkerke is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Noord-Beveland, and lies about 20 km northeast of Middelburg.

Zeeland (, Dutch: [ˈzeːlɑnt] (listen); Zeeuws: Zeêland [ˈzɪə̯lɑnt]; historical English exonym Zealand) is the westernmost and least populous province of the Netherlands. The province, located in the south-west of the country, borders North Brabant to the east, South Holland to the north, and the country of Belgium to the south and west. It consists of a number of islands and peninsulas (hence its name, meaning "Sealand") and a strip bordering the Flemish provinces of East and West Flanders. Its capital is Middelburg with a population of 48,544 as of November 2019, the largest municipality in Zeeland is Terneuzen (pop. 54,589). Zeeland has two seaports: Vlissingen and Terneuzen. Its area is 2,934 square kilometres (1,130 sq mi), of which 1,151 square kilometres (440 sq mi) is water, and it has a population of 383,689 as of November 2019. Large parts of Zeeland are below sea level. The last great flooding of the area was in 1953. Tourism is an important economic activity. In the summer, its beaches make it a popular destination for tourists, especially German tourists. In some areas, the population can be two to four times higher during the high summer season. The coat of arms of Zeeland shows a lion half-emerged from water, and the text luctor et emergo (Latin for "I struggle and emerge"). The country of New Zealand was named after Zeeland after it was sighted by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman.

Geersdijk is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Noord-Beveland, and lies about 13 km northeast of Middelburg. The village was first mentioned in 1216 as Gerolsdike, and means "dike of Gerolf (person)". The original Geersdijk became an independent parish in 1216. The medieval village was lost in a flood in 1530 and disappeared completely in 1532. The current Geersdijk developed in 1668 after the Geersdijksepolder was enclosed by a dike.Geersdijk lost its harbour in 1771 when the Willempolder was diked. In 1808, a new harbour with a canal to the Veerse Gat was constructed. Geersdijk was home to 201 people in 1840.Geersdijk was flooded during the North Sea flood of 1953 and many houses were damaged beyond repair. The Drenthehuis was a gift of the province of Drenthe after the floods. It was completed in 1960 and is used a village house.

's-Gravenhoek is a former municipality in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It consisted of a number of polders on the north side of the island of Noord-Beveland, east of Wissenkerke. The municipality of 's-Gravenhoek was smaller than the former domain (heerlijkheid) of the same name, which included the two polders Oud-'s-Gravenhoek and Nieuw-'s-Gravenhoek, which flooded in 1745 and 1752. The remaining part of the municipality had a low population, as it contained no village or hamlet, and it merged with neighbouring Wissenkerke in 1816.

Stroodorp is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Noord-Beveland, and lies about 11 km northeast of Middelburg.Stroodorp is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Kamperland. The hamlet consists of about 35 houses, but most are holiday homes, and only 6 are permanently inhabited.The hamlet was first mentioned in 1847 as Strooijedorp (Het), and means "straw village" after the straw covering of the temporary houses of the people who poldered the land.

Kamperland is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Noord-Beveland, and lies about 11 km northeast of Middelburg.

Kortgene is a small city in the southwest Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Noord-Beveland, Zeeland, about 15 km northeast of Middelburg. It received city rights in 1431, but was flooded in 1530 and 1532. The new settlement received city rights in 1684.

Deltapark Neeltje Jans is a Dutch theme park located on the former artificial island Neeltje Jans at the Oosterschelde. In addition to the attractive nature of the Deltapark Neeltje Jans, it also plays an educational role with respect to the Delta Works.

Neeltje Jans (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈneːlcə jɑns]) is an artificial island in the Netherlands in the province of Zeeland, halfway between Noord-Beveland and Schouwen-Duiveland in the Oosterschelde. It was constructed to facilitate the construction of the Oosterscheldedam. After the construction, a fun park with attractions and other various expositions were built on the island, which are now connected to the shore through the dam. Another addition of the island is a nature reserve.The island was named after a nearby sand bank. The name of this sandbank has two possible origins: It could be named after a boat with the name Neeltje Jans, stranded on the sandbank. Neeltje is a Dutch first name (a diminutive from Cornelia or Neelie like in Neelie Kroes). Jans is a familiar surname (meaning a son or daughter of Jan). It could be named after a goddess of the sea, Nehalennia.The second stage of the 2015 Tour de France finished on Neeltje Jans on 5 July 2015.

The Oosterscheldekering (pronounced [oːstərˌs̺xɛldəˈkɪːrɪŋ] English: Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier), between the islands Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland, is the largest of the Delta Works, a series of dams and storm surge barriers, designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea. The construction of the Delta Works was a response to the widespread damage and loss of life in the North Sea flood of 1953.

The Delta Works (Dutch: Deltawerken) is a series of construction projects in the southwest of the Netherlands to protect a large area of land around the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta from the sea. Constructed between 1954 and 1997, the works consist of dams, sluices, locks, dykes, levees, and storm surge barriers located in the provinces of South Holland and Zeeland. The aim of the dams, sluices, and storm surge barriers was to shorten the Dutch coastline, thus reducing the number of dikes that had to be raised. Along with the Zuiderzee Works, the Delta Works have been declared one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
