Delta Works

Deltapark Neeltje Jans is a Dutch theme park located on the former artificial island Neeltje Jans at the Oosterschelde. In addition to the attractive nature of the Deltapark Neeltje Jans, it also plays an educational role with respect to the Delta Works.

The Oosterscheldekering (pronounced [oːstərˌs̺xɛldəˈkɪːrɪŋ] English: Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier), between the islands Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland, is the largest of the Delta Works, a series of dams and storm surge barriers, designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea. The construction of the Delta Works was a response to the widespread damage and loss of life in the North Sea flood of 1953.

Neeltje Jans (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈneːlcə jɑns]) is an artificial island in the Netherlands in the province of Zeeland, halfway between Noord-Beveland and Schouwen-Duiveland in the Oosterschelde. It was constructed to facilitate the construction of the Oosterscheldedam. After the construction, a fun park with attractions and other various expositions were built on the island, which are now connected to the shore through the dam. Another addition of the island is a nature reserve.The island was named after a nearby sand bank. The name of this sandbank has two possible origins: It could be named after a boat with the name Neeltje Jans, stranded on the sandbank. Neeltje is a Dutch first name (a diminutive from Cornelia or Neelie like in Neelie Kroes). Jans is a familiar surname (meaning a son or daughter of Jan). It could be named after a goddess of the sea, Nehalennia.The second stage of the 2015 Tour de France finished on Neeltje Jans on 5 July 2015.

Westerschouwen is a former municipality in the Dutch province of Zeeland. The municipality was formed in a merger of the municipalities Burgh, Haamstede, Noordwelle, Renesse, and Serooskerke on January 1, 1961. As the name indicates, it covered the western part of the island of Schouwen. On January 1, 1997, Westerschouwen merged with Brouwershaven, Bruinisse, Duiveland, Middenschouwen, and Zierikzee to form the new municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland.

Westenschouwen is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 21 km north of Middelburg. Westenschouwen was a separate municipality until 1816, when it was merged into Burgh.Westenschouwen was home to 88 people in 1840. The hamlet is mainly known its beach.

Burgh is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is connected to Haamstede, and therefore generally considered to be part of the village Burgh-Haamstede.

Burghsluis is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 22 km north of Middelburg.Burghsluis is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Burgh-Haamstede. It has place signs and a little harbour. It was home to 89 people in 1840. Nowadays, it consists of about 30 houses.The Plompe Toren is located near Burghsluis which is the sole reminder of the flooded village Koudekerke. Around 1550 dikes were built, but the village of Koudekerke was left outside the dike. The village was demolished and used as building material except for the tower of the church which remained standing.

Haamstede is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland. The village is known for Haamstede Castle.

Nieuw-Haamstede is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 25 km north of Middelburg. It was built before 1940 as a holiday neighbourhood in the dunes belonging to Haamstede. The lighthouse Westerlichttoren was built between 1837 and 1840 and is 50 metres (160 ft) tall.

The Westerlichttoren or West Schouwen is a lighthouse in Haamstede, Netherlands. Designed by L. Valk, it was built in 1837. At 47 m above ground and a light stand at 58 m above sea level it is one of the tallest lighthouses in the Netherlands. The lighthouse is built in brick and iron, the walls are 2.4 m thick at the bottom, tapering upward. It is painted in a red-and-white spiral. A stair of 226 steps, in stone and partially in iron, leads to the top. The lighthouse is unattended.

Wissenkerke is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Noord-Beveland, and lies about 20 km northeast of Middelburg.
