Thornbury Castle

The Castle School is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form with academy status, located in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, England, which serves the town and the surrounding villages. Pupils from Bristol also attend the school. There are around 1,189,pupils, including 360 in the sixth form. The main school site on Park Road has seen additions in recent years including the community sports centre, and the Octagon art gallery and classroom. The Gloucester Road buildings approximately half a mile away are primarily used as the sixth form centre, but also house the vocational faculty used by lower years.Former headmaster Adrian Verwoert was appointed a CBE for services to education in May 2004. Joining the school in 1980, he was appointed as head in 1988. He was succeeded by Melanie Warnes in September 2004. She left in 2014.

Thornbury Rural District was a rural district council centred on Thornbury in the south of Gloucestershire. It was originally formed as a Poor Law Union on 5 April 1836 with 26 Guardians representing the 21 parishes in the Union and the Guardians of the Poor became the Rural Sanitary Authority for the District in 1872. The Rural District Council became a separate body in 1894 although the District Councillors had a dual mandate as members of both the council and the Board of Guardians.The District was enlarged in 1904 when Henbury was transferred from the abolished Barton Regis Rural District. In 1930 the Guardians were abolished when their functions were transferred to It was abolished in 1974 and the majority of it transferred into the new county of Avon, as part of the new district of Northavon. However a group of parishes in the north of the district, around Berkeley, wished not to transfer into the new county, but chose instead to remain with Gloucestershire, under the new Stroud District Council. These were the parishes of Hinton, Hamfallow, Ham and Stone, Alkington, and Berkeley itself, and all except Stone were part of the ancient ecclesiastical parish of Berkeley. With the demise of Avon, in 1996, the 'Berkeley parishes' were not re-united with the Thornbury area in the new unitary authority of South Gloucestershire, but remained with the main county of Gloucestershire.

GLOSS FM was an online community radio station in the United Kingdom, broadcasting to Thornbury and District, South Gloucestershire. Its strapline is "Your Local Station". It originally started broadcasting to the South Gloucestershire area on 19 April 2010. It was an extension of Thornbury FM, a smaller station broadcasting to just Thornbury which had started on 19 November 2005. In November 2009, the station relocated its transmitter which increased its coverage area. After an open competition GLOSS FM was chosen as the station's new name in order to be more relevant to all listeners. GLOSS FM legally broadcast under the terms of Ofcom's Restricted Service Licence regime until the spring of 2011. This restricted the station to a maximum of two 28-day broadcasts per year in addition to its webcasts which were broadcast continually. In this year the station closed after an unsuccessful licence bid for a permanent FM frequency which was rejected by Ofcom due to "no suitable FM frequency available" in the area - an assertion which they have since indicated is not correct. After a 6 year break and several attempts to restart it, the station re-launched on 29 July 2017. The station rebranded to Thornbury Radio in November 2021.

The Thornbury Hoard is a hoard of 11,460 copper alloy Roman coins, mainly radiates and nummi, dating from 260 to 348, found in the back garden of Ken Allen in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, England while digging a pond in March 2004. It was described as the "third largest of its kind" found in Great Britain.

Thornbury is a market town and civil parish in the South Gloucestershire unitary authority area of England, about 12 mi (19 km) north of Bristol. It had a population of 12,063 at the 2011 census. The population has risen to 14,496 in the 2021 census. Thornbury is a Britain in Bloom award-winning town, with its own competition: Thornbury in Bloom. The earliest documentary evidence of a village at "Thornbyrig" dates from the end of the 9th century. Domesday Book noted a manor of "Turneberie" belonging to William the Conqueror's consort, Matilda of Flanders, with 104 residents.

Thornbury Town Hall, is a municipal building in the High Street, Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England. The building, which is the meeting place of Thornbury Town Council, is a Grade II listed building.

Thornbury Town Football Club is a football club located in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, England. They are currently members of the Hellenic League Premier Division and play at the Mundy Playing Fields. The club is affiliated to the Gloucestershire County FA and is a FA Charter Standard Club. As well as a first and reserve team, the club also operates youth teams from Under 6s to Under 18s. The youth teams were part of Thornbury Falcons until they merged in 2010 with the adults team and adopted the "Thornbury Town" name.

Thornbury railway station served the town of Thornbury in Gloucestershire. The station was the terminus of a short 7.5-mile (12 km) branch from Yate on the Midland Railway's line between Bristol and Gloucester. The station was designed by the Midland Railway company architect John Holloway Sanders. It opened in 1872 with two trains in each direction a day, both connecting at Yate with trains on the mainline. Later trains appear to have run through to and from Bristol Temple Meads, though the service was never frequent. In 1910, there were four trains in each direction on week-days.Thornbury station appears to have been badly affected by the rise of industrial development in the Patchway and Filton areas that were not accessible from the railway, but could be reached using cheaper road services to Patchway railway station and Great Western Railway trains from there. The station at Thornbury had a large double-roomed terminus building. The single platform was on the north side and there was a run-round loop. Sidings occupied the land opposite the platform, and there were goods facilities for handling livestock beyond the platforms towards the terminal buffers. The station had a basic wooden engine shed, turntable, goods shed, water tower and a substantial station master's house.Thornbury station was an early casualty to rail closure, and passenger services ceased in 1944, though passengers to and from the US military hospital at Leyhill, now a prison, continued later. It remained open for goods traffic until 1966 and was used extensively in the construction of the first Severn road bridge and the Oldbury Power Station. Even after Thornbury closed, a section of the branch remained open for quarry traffic to Tytherington Quarry. At Thornbury, the station buildings were demolished and are now the site of a Tesco supermarket. From the 1990s onwards various proposals have been made for reopening the line to Thornbury as part of a Bristol/South Gloucestershire suburban rail network, most recently in a consultation report produced by Halcrow Group in 2012, as well as the November 2015 joint transport study report produced by The West of England Local Enterprise Partnership.

Northavon was, from 1983 until 2010, a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elected one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

Northavon was a district in the English county of Avon from 1974 to 1996. The district was formed by the Local Government Act 1972 on 1 April 1974 as part of a reform of local authorities throughout England and Wales. Under the reorganisation, the area surrounding the cities of Bath and Bristol was formed into a new county of "Avon", named after the river that ran through the area. The county was divided into six districts, one of which was formed from the areas of Sodbury Rural District (except the parish of Alderley) and most of Thornbury Rural District (16 out of 21 parishes) in Gloucestershire. The name "Northavon" was invented in 1973, simply denoting the district's position in the county. In 1991 the county boundaries of Avon and Gloucestershire were realigned. The main effect of the change was that the Hillesley and Tresham area was transferred from Northavon to the neighbouring District of Stroud in Gloucestershire.Following a review by the Local Government Commission for England, both the County of Avon and District of Northavon were abolished on 1 April 1996. Northavon was merged with the neighbouring Borough of Kingswood to form the unitary authority of South Gloucestershire.Northavon was a parliamentary constituency. It was abolished ahead of the 2010 general election, with the area being split between the constituencies of Filton and Bradley Stoke and Thornbury and Yate.

Duckhole is a hamlet in South Gloucestershire in the west of England. Historically it was located in the hundred of Lower Thornbury in the county of Gloucestershire and the name dates back at least as far as 1658, when it appeared in a parliamentary survey.At the time of the 2011 United Kingdom census Duckhole consisted of just thirteen households with a total population of thirty-five. The hamlet lies in a rural setting a short distance to the west of Lower Morton, near the town of Thornbury and consists mainly of farmland and also a small number of cottages.

Marlwood School (founded 1606) is a state-funded secondary school currently part of the CSET academy chain. Located at Alveston, South Gloucestershire, it is situated on the B3561 on the outskirts of the south-west of the village. Marlwood School has around 500 pupils aged 11–16. In its most recent Ofsted inspection, Marlwood was rated ‘Requires Improvement’ overall and ‘Good’ in 3 out of 4 measures, with the report noting that the school ‘is enjoying a new lease of life.’
