Poplar Springs is an unincorporated community in southwestern Surry County, North Carolina, United States, situated on Springs Road between the town of Elkin and the community of Mulberry. Prominent landmarks include Poplar Springs Baptist Church and cemetery. The community is serviced by State Road Volunteer Fire Department, founded in 1960. Also located in the area is Cedar Brook Country Club, popular for golf, tennis, and swimming for area citizens. Businesses in the area include: Poplar Springs Grocery and Service, Tracy's Garage, Elk Electric Motors, L & A Emergency Equipment, Inc., Watson Metals, and Pine Log Company.

Union Cross is an unincorporated community in the Dobson Township of central Surry County, North Carolina, United States. The community is roughly centered on the intersection of Dobbins Mill Road and Twin Oaks Road. Prominent landmarks include Union Cross Baptist Church, Union Cross Baptist Church cemetery, the Dockery Family Cemetery, and a local Ruritan club. The land for the Union Cross Ruritan Club was donated to the community for this purpose by Mrs. Minnie Shinault Dockery, widow of T. Alvin Dockery, a prominent local farmer and owner of the local general store. This Community is served by the Jot-Um-Down Volunteer Fire Department, which was founded in 1980.

Elkin Township is one of fifteen townships in Surry County, North Carolina, United States. The township had a population of 6,283 according to the 2020 census. Geographically, Elkin Township occupies 21.3 square miles (55 km2) in southwestern Surry County. Elkin Township's southern border is the Yadkin River. The only incorporated municipality within Elkin Township is the Town of Elkin, the second largest municipality in Surry County.

The Mitchell River is a tributary of the Yadkin River in northwestern North Carolina in the United States. Via the Yadkin it is part of the watershed of the Pee Dee River, which flows to the Atlantic Ocean. According to the Geographic Names Information System, it has also been known historically as "Mitchells River," "Mitchels River," and "Mountain Creek."The Mitchell rises in eastern Alleghany County in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and flows generally southeastwardly through Surry County, where it joins the Yadkin River about 5 mi (8 km) northeast of Elkin at the community of Burch.In Surry County, it collects the short South Fork Mitchell River, which has also been known historically as "Mill Creek," "South Fork Creek," and "South Fork Mitchells River." The river is a popular destination for anglers who catch Brown, Brook, and Rainbow trout.

Burch, or more commonly known locally as Burch Station, is an unincorporated community along the Yadkin River in the Marsh Township of Surry County, North Carolina, United States. The community sits on the mouth of the Mitchell River where it empties into the Yadkin. The community is known as Burch Station after the former train depot there on the former Southern Railway, now used by the Yadkin Valley Railroad.

Salem Fork is an unincorporated community in central Surry County, North Carolina, United States. The community is centered on the junction of Zephyr Road (SR 1001) and Interstate 77. Prominent landmarks in the community include Salem Fork Baptist Church and Salem Fork Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ). A growing commercial area is developing in the center of the community, including hotels and planned shops. This is due to the increased traffic volume from the interstate to the nearby Shelton Vineyards attraction and the expansion of some municipal services from the nearby town of Dobson.

Mountain Park is an unincorporated community located in the Bryan Township of western Surry County, North Carolina. The community's unique name is derived from its "mountain location in a park-like setting." Notable old-time musician and luthier Johnny Gentry is from Mountain Park. The most notable event is the annual Mountain Park Independence Day Celebration that is hosted by the Mountain Park Ruritan Club, which attracts between 1,000-3,000 annually.

Elkin is a town in Surry and Wilkes counties in the U.S. state of North Carolina, along the Yadkin River. Elkin shares its name with the surrounding township of Elkin Township. The population was 4,122 at the time of the 2020 census.
