Banski Dvori

The bombing of the Banski Dvori (Croatian: bombardiranje Banskih dvora) was a Yugoslav Air Force strike on the Banski Dvori in Zagreb—the official residence of the President of Croatia at the time of the Croatian War of Independence. The airstrike occurred on 7 October 1991, as a part of a Yugoslav Air Force attack on a number of targets in the Croatian capital city. One civilian was reported killed by strafing of the Tuškanac city district and four were injured. At the time of the attack, Croatian President Franjo Tuđman was in the building, meeting Stjepan Mesić, then President of the Presidency of Yugoslavia, and Ante Marković, then Prime Minister of Yugoslavia, but none of them were injured in the attack. In immediate aftermath, Tuđman remarked that the attack was apparently meant to destroy the Banski Dvori as the seat of the statehood of Croatia. Marković blamed Yugoslav Defence Secretary General Veljko Kadijević, who denied the accusation and suggested the event was staged by Croatia. The attack prompted international condemnation and consideration of economic sanctions against Yugoslavia. The presidential residence was immediately moved to the Presidential palace, which was formerly known as Villa Zagorje. The Banski Dvori sustained significant damage, but repairs started only in 1995. The building later became the seat of the Croatian Government.

The 2020 Zagreb shooting, commonly referred to as the St. Mark's Square attack (Croatian: Napad na Trgu svetog Marka), occurred on 12 October 2020 in Zagreb, Croatia, when 22-year-old Danijel Bezuk approached Banski dvori, which houses the office of the Prime Minister and serves as the meeting place of the government, on St. Mark's Square and started shooting at it with an assault rifle, wounding a police officer in the process. In the aftermath, the perpetrator ran off to a nearby neighborhood and committed suicide.

The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Croatia (Croatian: Ustavni sud Republike Hrvatske) is an institution that acts as the interpreter and guardian of the Croatian Constitution and which monitors the conformity of laws with the Constitution as well as protection of human rights and freedoms of citizens that are guaranteed by the Constitution. It is considered to be de facto the highest judicial authority because it can overturn Supreme Court decisions on the basis of constitutional breaches. It is not considered as being part of the judicial branch of government, but rather a court sui generis, and it is therefore often colloquially referred to as a "fourth branch of government", alongside the traditional model of tripartite separation of powers into the executive (Government/President of the Republic), legislative (Parliament) and judicial (Supreme Court) branches.

Zagreb protest was a political protest organized in Zagreb, Croatia, on 17 February 2024 by a coalition of 11 left-wing, liberal opposition parties (We Can! – Political Platform, Social Democratic Party, Workers' Front, Centre, Party with a First and Last Name, Civic Liberal Alliance, Croatian Peasant Party, Istrian Democratic Assembly, Focus, Social Democrats, People's Party – Reformists) against the government of Andrej Plenković and the Croatian Democratic Union. The protest was held under the name "Enough! Let's go to the elections!" (Croatian: Dosta je! Odmah na izbore!).

St. Mark's Square (Croatian: Trg svetog Marka, abbreviated Trg sv. Marka, also known as Markov trg) is a square located in the old part of Zagreb, Croatia, called Gradec or Gornji grad (English: Upper town). In the center of square is located St. Mark's Church. The square also sports important governmental buildings: Banski dvori (the seat of the Government of Croatia), Croatian Parliament (Croatian: Hrvatski sabor) and Constitutional Court of Croatia. On the corner of St. Mark's Square and the Street of Ćiril and Metod is the Old City Hall, where the Zagreb City Council held its sessions. In 2006, the square underwent a renovation project. In August 2005, the Government forbid any form of protests on St. Mark's Square, which caused controversies in Croatian civil society. This ban was partially lifted in 2012. Until 2020 the square was also the site of the inaugurations of Croatia's presidents. Franjo Tuđman took his oath as President of the Republic in 1992 and 1997, Stjepan Mesić in 2000 and 2005, Ivo Josipović in 2010, and Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović in 2015. However, in 2020 Zoran Milanović decided to take his oath in the Presidential Palace instead.

The Church of St. Mark (Croatian: Crkva sv. Marka, pronounced [tsr̩kʋa sʋetoɡ mar̩ka]) is the parish church of old Zagreb, Croatia, located in St. Mark's Square. It is one of the oldest architectural monuments in Zagreb.

The Old City Hall (Croatian: Stara gradska vijećnica) is a complex of three adjacent buildings located in the Gradec neighbourhood in Zagreb, Croatia. The three buildings were joined in the late 19th century and since then, the complex has served as the place where all sessions of the city assembly are held.

Gradec (Croatian pronunciation: [grǎdet͡s]), Grič (Croatian pronunciation: [grîːtʃ], Hungarian: Gréc, Latin: Mons Graecensis prope Zagrabiam) or Gornji Grad (meaning "Upper Town", cf. Donji grad, "Lower Town") is a part of Zagreb, Croatia, and together with Kaptol it is the medieval nucleus of the city. It is situated on the hill of Grič. Today this neighbourhood forms part of the Gornji Grad-Medveščak district.

Vojković palace (Croatian: Palača Vojković), alternatively the Vojković-Oršić-Rauch palace, is a three-winged Late Baroque palace in Zagreb's Upper Town. It was built in 1764 for Lieutenant Colonel of the cavalry at Banska Krajina (Border), Sigismund Vojković (Vojkffy). It changed ownership multiple times throughout history, and today it houses the Croatian History Museum.

Sabor Palace (Croatian: Saborska palača) is a historic building in Gornji Grad, Zagreb, which houses the Croatian Parliament, called Sabor. The place first housed the initial building for the parliament of Croatia, Dalmatia, and Slavonia in 1737, and the current building got its final expansion and overhaul in 1911.

Croatian History Museum (Croatian: Hrvatski povijesni muzej) is a museum of history located in the Vojković Palace on Antun Gustav Matoš Street in the historic Gornji Grad district of Zagreb, Croatia. The museum holdings consist of around 300,000 objects divided into 17 collections. In addition to a part of the Meštrović Pavilion, it also administers the Ivan Goran Kovačić Memorial Museum in Lukovdol.The museum was formed in 1940 as the Croatian National Historic Museum (Hrvatski narodni historički muzej), stemming from the former National Museum (Narodni muzej), which was formed in 1846 (see also Croatian Natural History Museum).The museum does not have a permanent display. Instead, it only holds temporary exhibitions due to lack of space. In order to remedy this problem, the building of the Zagreb Tobacco Factory (Tvornica duhana Zagreb) was assigned to the museum in 2007, but as of 2015, the museum remains in Matoš Street. The museum building was damaged in the 2020 Zagreb earthquake and remains closed to visitors as of 2021.

Amadeo Theatre and Music Company started its activities in the summer of 2000 in the atrium of the Croatian Natural History Museum at Upper Town in Zagreb, Croatia. Between 1797 and 1834, that same building was the founding place of the first Croatian public theatre called Amadeo's theatre, named after its founder, the Hungarian count Anton Amade de Varkony, who was also a notable county prefect of Zagreb. In the period between 2006 and 2009, the company was placed in the Museum of Arts and Crafts, Zagreb. In the summer of 2010, it relocated back to the atrium of the Croatian Natural History Museum.Amadeo Theatre and Music Company is the only polyvalent summer scene in Zagreb with its program going on from July until September. Overall, during one summer there are about 50 plays, concerts and film events with the participation of renowned Croatian and foreign artists.
