15-year-old Nicole van den Hurk (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈnɪkɔːl vɑn dən ˈɦʏr(ə)k]) disappeared on her way to work on 6 October 1995, in Eindhoven, (the Dutch province of North Brabant). Her body was later found in the woods between the towns of Mierlo and Lierop on November 22, 1995.In 2011, van den Hurk's stepbrother confessed to the killing, but due to a lack of evidence, was released a month later. He would go on to state he had falsely confessed to get her body exhumed for DNA tests.DNA collected from Nicole's remains and from the crime scene led to the arrest of a man in January 2014, who is referred to only as Jos de G. (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈjɔz də ˈɣeː]) in media reports due to a commonly accepted privacy code from the Dutch media. Jos de G. was already convicted in other cases with the same modus operandi. The serial rapist was originally charged with rape and manslaughter, and was found guilty of rape in November 2016 and sentenced to five years' imprisonment. He was initially acquitted of the manslaughter charge, but after the prosecution appealed the acquittal, De G. was convicted of both rape and manslaughter and his sentence was increased to twelve years.

The Strabrechtse Heide is a natural heathland area about 1500 ha in size, located in the municipalities of Heeze-Leende, Someren and Geldrop-Mierlo, in North Brabant, the Netherlands. It is largely under the care of Staatsbosbeheer. In July 2010, around 200 hectares of the area were damaged or destroyed in a wildfire that took over a week to put out.

Theater 't Speelhuis was a theatre in Helmond, the Netherlands. The theatre was designed by Piet Blom, who also designed the cube houses in Helmond and in Rotterdam. It was opened in October 1977 by then Crown Princess Beatrix.The theatre was completely destroyed by fire on 29 December 2011. The building was a municipal monument, not a Rijksmonument, as was wrongly reported by several media.
