The first high school in Powell was established in 1874 and was called Perkins High School. In 1916, it was renamed for Columbus Powell, the prominent person for whom the Powell Railroad Depot had been named earlier.The principal is Chad Smith. Cumberland Estates is a residential neighborhood in the City of Knoxville, Tennessee, United States, which gained national attention for architectural innovation and research housing in the mid-20th century. It began 2.1 miles outside the city limits, in Knox County, as one of many planned suburban neighborhoods in the post-World War II economic expansion. The development soon attracted an innovative young architect and national sponsors who would create new ways to rapidly and affordably fill the demand for residential housing needs for America’s growing population of families. Their prominent work in the neighborhood influenced the evolution of residential building design. While the attention received from the research homes waned in the last century, the neighborhood has maintained its residential character with few changes while avoiding commercial encroachment and blight.

WJBE (1040 kHz) is an American commercial radio station licensed to Powell, Tennessee, an unincorporated community just northeast of Knoxville; the station serves the Knoxville metropolitan area with an urban contemporary format. WJBE is owned by Joe E. Armstrong through broadcast licensee Arm & Rage, LLC. This station is unrelated to the former locally based WJBE (1430 AM) owned by entertainer James Brown from 1968 through 1979, for which it is named.WJBE operates on the clear-channel frequency of 1040 AM, but is not considered a clear-channel station because it is a Class D daytime-only station. WHO in Des Moines, Iowa is the dominant Class A station, also known as a clear-channel station. 1040 AM in the Knoxville area began broadcasting in 1984 and primarily aired an adult standards format for its first 25 years. The station then aired classic country music in the late 2000s and early 2010s before being sold to its present ownership in 2013 and being reoriented toward the Black community in Knoxville.

Powell STOLport (FAA LID: 9A2) was a privately owned, public use STOLport in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. It is located five nautical miles (9 km) northwest of the central business district of Knoxville, Tennessee. This facility had a runway designed for use by STOL (short take-off and landing) aircraft. The airport was annexed by the City of Knoxville in April 2003.The airport closed in the mid-2000s, and served its final flight in April 2012 when the then-owners sold the last aircraft that had been stored at the facility. The Lones–Dowell House is a historic home located at 6341 Middlebrook Pike in Knoxville, Tennessee. Jacob Lones settled on the land in the late 18th century, but the home was not built until circa 1857. The home is generally believed to have been built by Jacob Lones' son, Charles Lones.The house is named after its first and last owners.

The murder of Emma Walker occurred on the night of November 21, 2016, in the Sterchi Hills neighborhood in Knoxville, Tennessee. Emma Walker, a high school student, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend William Riley Gaul. Walker died of a gunshot wound to the back of her head, behind her left ear. The case occurred after Walker broke up with him due to his aggressive behavior. At that time, Walker was a high school cheerleader and Gaul was a college football player. Walker and Gaul were a couple for two years; however, Walker ended the relationship due to its "volatile" nature and Gaul's behavior. According to prosecutors and other witnesses close to the couple, Gaul killed Walker out of anger over the end of their relationship. Gaul was arrested after a friend secretly recorded him confessing to Walker's killing. Gaul was indicted with seven charges in relation with Walker's murder. In May 2018, the jury found Gaul guilty of all charges. Gaul was immediately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 51 years. Emma Walker's case, was considered a notable example of teen dating violence. Walker's murder received international media attention, and were profiled on 20/20 and Dateline.

WMYL (96.7 FM, "96.7 Merle") is a radio station broadcasting the country music format. Licensed to Halls Crossroads, Tennessee, United States, the station serves the Knoxville area. The station is currently owned and operated by Ron Meredith M & M Broadcasting.In 2006, Ron Meredith and M&M Broadcasting purchased WXJB, WFXY, and WANO in Middlesboro, KY, Harrogate, TN, and Pineville, KY, for just over 1 million dollars, changed the call letters to of WXJB to WMYL, and branded the station as Merle FM, moving it Knoxville and Halls Crossroads, to which it is licensed. As of spring 2020, the station is now branded "96.7 Merle. Forgotten favorites and only the new country you love." Since moving on to Halls Crossroads, 96.7 Merle has offered a mix of old and new country and is wildly successful in East Tennessee. The station is home to multiple CMA Personality Of The Year award winners, including morning show Bud and Broadway, afternoon talent Jack Ryan, and Knoxville country legend Mike Hammond on-air at 96.7 Merle.
