Acworth, Georgia

The Acworth Downtown Historic District, in Acworth, Georgia, is a historic district roughly bounded by Southside Dr., Federal and Lemon Sts, and Senator Richard B. Russell Ave. It is 14 acres (5.7 ha) in area and includes 32 contributing buildings and a contributing structure.It is a linear district along Main Street and the CSX railway tracks.

Lake Acworth is a 260-acre (110 ha) artificial lake southwest of the city of Acworth, Georgia. It is in the extreme northwestern part of Cobb County. The lake impounds Proctor Creek (not the same as Proctor Creek in nearby Atlanta), and outflows into Lake Allatoona. The low dam is at the point where State Route 92 (Lake Acworth Drive) crosses. (34.0584°N 84.693°W / 34.0584; -84.693 (Lake Acworth Dam)) The city operates Acworth Beach, a public beach and park along the lake's northern shore. It was created by trucking white sand in and putting it over the rust-red clay soil common to the region. Swimming is roped off with floats for protection from the boaters. The Lake Acworth Beach and Beachhouse were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

North Metro Technical College (commonly North Metro Tech, or NMTC ) was a two-year state technical college located in the state of Georgia, and governed by the Technical College System of Georgia. The college was accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees since 2006. Since the beginning of July 2009, it is now the North Metro campus of nearby Chattahoochee Technical College.

North Cobb Christian School is an independent, college preparatory Christian school located in Kennesaw, Georgia, United States. It enrolls children from K3-12th grade. The school offers a variety of honors and AP classes, clubs, and a variety of middle school, junior varsity and varsity sports. In addition to academic requirements mandated by the school board, a minimum of 28 hours of community service is required to graduate from North Cobb Christian School.

North Cobb High School is a public high school located north of Atlanta in Kennesaw, Georgia, United States. It serves approximately 2900 students in the Cobb County School District, with classes from grades 9 to 12. The school mascot is the warrior and the official school colors are orange and white. North Cobb is the second largest school in the district. North Cobb was established in 1958, replacing Acworth High School, and is one of the oldest high schools in Cobb County. North Cobb has a magnet program designated for international studies. In 2016, North Cobb was named an International Skills Diploma School by the Georgia Department of Education. An on-campus preschool provides field experience for students interested in pursuing early childhood education. North Cobb offers Advanced Placement programs such as AP Human Geography, AP Language, AP United States History, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP European History, AP Seminar, AP World History, AP United States Government and AP Environmental Science.

Mars Hill is an unincorporated community in Cobb County, in the U.S. state of Georgia.Mars Hill Road is a primary corridor through the area and neighboring Lost Mountain. Residents in the community have either Acworth, Marietta, or Powder Springs addresses.

Allatoona is an unincorporated community in Bartow County, in the U.S. state of Georgia. The community is located along Allatoona Creek, 6 miles (9.7 km) southeast of Cartersville. It was once a small mining community until a dam was erected at the base of the Etowah River, completely flooding the town of Allatoona. It is today perhaps best known as the site of the Battle of Allatoona.

Oak Grove (population 11,793) is an unincorporated community in southern Cherokee County, Georgia, United States, near the intersection of Bells Ferry Road (former Georgia 205) and Georgia 92. Some maps instead center it at 92 and Wade Green Road, just to the west. The name is no longer commonly used to refer to the surrounding area. The United States Postal Service designated Oak Grove as part of Acworth for mailing purposes with the creation of the ZIP Code system in the 1960s, and the Oak Grove identity slowly began to disappear with suburbanization. The "Acworth" designation is despite being immediately west of Woodstock (and closest to its main post office), and not much further northeast of Kennesaw. The formerly volunteer Oak Grove Fire Department is now part of the professional Cherokee County system. The only original vestiges remaining of the community are Oak Grove Elementary School, one of the oldest in the state, and the Oak Grove Station of the United States Postal Service. Several neighborhoods near the school have Oak Grove in their names, but these are late arrivals and did not exist before the area was designated as Acworth by the United States Postal Service.

The Great Locomotive Chase (also known as Andrews' Raid or the Mitchel Raid) was a military raid that occurred April 12, 1862, in northern Georgia during the American Civil War. Volunteers from the Union Army, led by civilian scout James J. Andrews, commandeered a train, The General, and took it northward toward Chattanooga, Tennessee, doing as much damage as possible to the vital Western and Atlantic Railroad (W&A) line from Atlanta to Chattanooga as they went. They were pursued by Confederate forces at first on foot, and later on a succession of locomotives, including The Texas, for 87 miles (140 km). Because the Union men had cut the telegraph wires, the Confederates could not send warnings ahead to forces along the railway. Confederates eventually captured the raiders and quickly executed some as spies, including Andrews; some others were able to flee. The surviving raiders were the first to be awarded the newly created Medal of Honor by the US Congress for their actions. As a civilian, Andrews was not eligible.

Kennesaw is a suburban city northwest of Atlanta in Cobb County, Georgia, United States, located within the greater Atlanta metropolitan area. Known from its original settlement in the 1830s until 1887 as Big Shanty, it became Kennesaw under its 1887 charter. According to the 2020 census, Kennesaw had a population of 33,036, a 10.9% increase in population over the preceding decade. Kennesaw has an important place in railroad history. During the Civil War, Kennesaw was the staging ground for the Great Locomotive Chase on April 12, 1862.

The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History is a museum in Kennesaw, Georgia, that contains a collection of artifacts and relics from the American Civil War, as well as from railroads of the state of Georgia and surrounding regions. The centerpiece is the General, a steam locomotive used in the Great Locomotive Chase in April 1862. The archives house a significant collection of company records, engineering drawings, blueprints, glass plate negatives, photographs and correspondence from various American businesses representing the railroad industry in the South after the Civil War. The archives also contain a growing collection of Civil War letters, diaries, and official records.

Western & Atlantic Railroad #3 General is a 4-4-0 "American" type steam locomotive built in 1855 by the Rogers, Ketchum & Grosvenor in Paterson, New Jersey for the Western & Atlantic Railroad, best known as the engine stolen by Union spies in the Great Locomotive Chase, an attempt to cripple the Confederate rail network during the American Civil War. Today, the locomotive is preserved at the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw, Georgia, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
