South Windham, Connecticut

The Fourth Camp of Rochambeau's Army is a historic military camp site near Plains Road and Lovers Lane on the banks of the Shetucket River in Windham, Connecticut. It was here that the French Army encamped in the summer of 1781 under the command of Rochambeau on their march from Providence, Rhode Island to rendezvous with the Continental Army under General George Washington. Four divisions passed through, each one day apart.: E3  One of Rochambeau's aides described Windham at the time as "a charming market town, where, incidentally, there were many pretty women at whose homes we passed the afternoon very agreeably." Of the camp site, he wrote, "A mile away is a beautiful river (the Shetucket) with a fine wooden bridge. We camped on its banks very comfortably, though hardly militarily."The camp site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. The next campsite to the west is also NRHP-listed as Fifth Camp of Rochambeau's Infantry. On the army's return trip in 1782, its 47th camp site (also NRHP-listed) was at a different location in Windham.: E4  The site is one of multiple properties whose possible listing on the National Register was covered in a 2001 study.

The Dr. Chester Hunt Office is an historic building on Windham Green Road in the village of Windham Center in Windham, Connecticut. Probably built in the early 19th century, it is one of the center's few surviving examples of commercial Federal period architecture. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

Windham Center Historic District is a 205-acre (83 ha) area in the town of Windham, Connecticut, that is designated as a historic district. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. At the time, it included 61 contributing buildings out of a total of 78 buildings, and it included 2 other contributing sites.

The Forty-Seventh Camp of Rochambeau's Army is a historic military camp site in Windham, Connecticut, located along Scotland Road a short way east of Windham Center. It was the site of a French Army camp in November 1782 on their march from the victory at Yorktown to Rhode Island. The camp site is considered of archaeological importance because it can shed light on transient military camp sites, whose locations are not often known. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

The March Route of Rochambeau's Army: Scotland Road is a historic road section in Windham, Connecticut. Extending along Scotland Road (Connecticut Route 14), from itsintersection with Back Rd. to 80 Scotland Road in, it is an evocative portion of the historic march route of the French Army under the Comte de Rochambeau in 1781 and 1782 during the American Revolutionary War. The troops camped beside the road within this segment in 1782. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Windham is a town in Windham County, Connecticut, United States. It contains the former city of Willimantic as well as the communities of Windham Center, North Windham, and South Windham. Willimantic, an incorporated city since 1893, was consolidated with the town in 1983. The town is part of the Southeastern Connecticut Planning Region. The population was 24,428 at the 2020 census.

The Natchaug River is a 17.9-mile-long (28.8 km) river in Windham and Tolland Counties in northeastern Connecticut. The name Natchaug comes from the Nipmuc language and is believed to mean land between rivers.

The Willimantic River is a tributary of the Shetucket River, approximately 25 miles (40 km) long in northeastern Connecticut in the New England region of the United States. It is formed in northern Tolland County, near Stafford Springs by the confluence of Middle River and Furnace Brook. It flows south to the city of Willimantic, where it joins the Natchaug River to form the Shetucket. It is joined by the Hop River on the Coventry, Columbia, and Windham town border.

WILI (1400 kHz) is an AM radio station in Willimantic, Connecticut, broadcasting at a power of 1,000 watts, full-time. WILI's programming is also heard on translator station W237EL (95.3 FM). It is affiliated with the ABC Entertainment Network, the Red Sox Radio Network, and the UConn Basketball and Football Networks. Its sister station is WILI-FM (98.3). The station is owned by Hall Communications, Inc. The studios are located on Main Street in Willimatic, near the Willimantic Footbridge.

The Battle of the Frogs is a local legend concerning an incident in the Connecticut Colony town of Windham in 1754.According to the legend, on a summer night, residents of the town were awakened by a mysterious loud noise of which they could not identify the source. Being the French and Indian War, the townspeople were wary of a possible attack from the French or Native Americans. The odd noise seemed to emanate from above and some people heard words in noise, thought to be the demands of the supposed attacking force or threats against prominent men in their community. This led them to panic and assume that Windham was under attack, some of them mistaking the croaks for shouted words or the beating of drums. A scouting party was sent out to investigate or negotiate. In the morning, hundreds of dead bullfrogs were found along the shore of a millpond east of the village. The loud croaking was largely attributed to a battle between the frogs, a lekking involving fighting over diminished territory in a drought-stricken pond. The "battle" that the Windhamites had with the frogs became a running joke in the region. Windham then embraced the frog as an emblem for the community, adopting a town seal with a frog and featuring frogs on currency from Windham Bank in the 19th century. Ballads and an opera were written about the Battle of the Frogs. The Thread City Crossing in Willimantic is colloquially known as the "Frog Bridge" for the four enormous copper frogs perched at each corner.

Connecticut's 2nd congressional district is a congressional district in the U.S. state of Connecticut. Located in the eastern part of the state, the district includes all of New London County, Tolland County, and Windham County, along with parts of Hartford, Middlesex, and New Haven counties. Principal cities include Enfield, Norwich, New London, and Groton. The district is currently represented by Democrat Joe Courtney. With a Cook Partisan Voting Index rating of D+3, it is one of the least Democratic districts in Connecticut, a state with an all-Democratic congressional delegation.

Willimantic is a village within the town of Windham, Connecticut. It is the sister station to WILI (1400 AM). The station is currently owned by Hall Communications, Inc. The studios are located on Main Street in Willimantic, near the Willimantic Footbridge.
