Pilsbury

Pilsbury Castle was a Norman castle in Derbyshire near the present-day village of Pilsbury, overlooking the River Dove.

The Church of St Luke, Sheen, Staffordshire is a Grade II* listed Anglican church. Its origins are of the 14th century, but it was largely rebuilt in the mid-19th century, firstly by C. W. Burleigh, and then by William Butterfield. The church, and its associated parsonage, were the last buildings recorded by Nikolaus Pevsner in his Buildings of England series, when he concluded the series in 1974 with his Staffordshire volume, finishing a project begun in 1945.

Sheen is a village and civil parish in north-east Staffordshire, England. The parish is about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) north to south and about 2 miles (3.2 km) east to west. The eastern boundary is the River Dove (the boundary with Derbyshire), and the western boundary is the River Manifold.There is a north-west to south-east ridge forming Sheen Moor; the village of Sheen, on a road running north–south through the parish, is near the southern end of the ridge. The highest point, at 380 metres (1,250 ft), is Sheen Hill. Hulme End, near the southern boundary, has height 271 metres (889 ft); Knowsley, near the northern boundary, has height 340 metres (1,120 ft). There is a steep escarpment to the River Dove in the east, and the ground falls less steeply to the River Manifold in the west. There is scattered settlement throughout the parish.The parish was described in 1851: "The face of the country is here wild and romantic, but the soil about the village is fertile and well enclosed."

The Cromford and High Peak Railway (C&HPR) was a standard-gauge line between the Cromford Canal wharf at High Peak Junction and the Peak Forest Canal at Whaley Bridge. The railway, which was completed in 1831, was built to carry minerals and goods through the hilly rural terrain of the Peak District within Derbyshire, England. The route was marked by a number of roped worked inclines. Due to falling traffic, the entire railway was closed by 1967. The remains of the line, between Dowlow and Cromford, has now become the High Peak Trail, a route on the National Cycle Network.

Hartington is a village in the centre of the White Peak area of the Derbyshire Peak District, England, lying on the River Dove which is the Staffordshire border. According to the 2001 census, the parish of Hartington Town Quarter, which also includes Pilsbury, had a population of 345 reducing to 332 at the 2011 Census. Formerly known for cheese-making and the mining of ironstone, limestone and lead, the village is now popular with tourists.

Hurdlow railway station was near to the hamlet of Hurdlow within Hartington Middle Quarter civil parish, to the south east of Buxton, Derbyshire on the LNWR line to Ashbourne and the south.

Hartington Hall is a much altered and extended 17th-century manor house at Hartington, Derbyshire, now a youth hostel. The Hall was built by the Bateman family. They were a well-established Norfolk family who settled at Hartington in the 16th century. Richard Bateman married Ellen Toplis of Tissington and it was their eldest son, Hugh, who built the new manor house at Hartington in 1611. In 1862 Thomas Osborne Bateman oversaw the substantial alteration and extension. The work was carried out by Henry Isaac Stevens of Derby.The house is built to an H plan: the main entrance front has three storeys and three gabled bays, the central bay recessed with an off-centre porch entrance. The dates of building and alterations are recorded on a lintel above the door. It is now a Grade II listed building.The Batemans remained at Hartington until the 20th century. In 1934 the property was opened as a youth hostel by the Youth Hostels Association (YHA) and became the property of YHA in 1948. Though it retains dormitory accommodation, it has many small rooms with ensuite facilities. There is a restaurant on site, open to the public as well as guests. A popular wedding venue, it also has a bridal suite. It has been claimed that Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed at the Hall during the Jacobite rising of 1745.

Hartington Middle Quarter is a civil parish within the Derbyshire Dales district, which is in the county of Derbyshire, England. Formerly a part of Hartington parish, for which it is named, it has a mix of a number of villages and hamlets amongst a mainly rural and undulating landscape, and is wholly within the Peak District National Park. It had a population of 379 residents in 2011. The parish is 130 miles (210 km) north west of London, 20 miles (32 km) north west of the county city of Derby, and 5 miles (8.0 km) south east of the nearest market town of Buxton. Being on the edge of the county border, it shares a boundary with the parishes of Chelmorton, Flagg, Hartington Town Quarter, Hartington Upper Quarter, Middleton and Smerrill, Monyash in Derbyshire, as well as Hollinsclough, Longnor and Sheen in Staffordshire.

Crowdecote (sometimes spelled Crowdicote) is a small village in Derbyshire, England. It is situated on the border between Derbyshire and Staffordshire about 6 miles (9.7 km) south of Buxton. Crowdecote is within the civil parish of Hartington Middle Quarter. It is thought that the name Crowdecote derives from Cruda’s Cot (Cruda was a Saxon landowner while 'cot' meant a form of shelter). Crowdecote is popular with walkers and ramblers because of its proximity to Chrome Hill, High Wheeldon and Parkhouse Hill to the north and Dovedale to the south.

Parsley Hay railway station served Parsley Hay, a hamlet within Hartington Middle Quarter civil parish, about 9.3 miles (15 km) south east of Buxton, Derbyshire, on the LNWR line to Ashbourne. The nearest large settlement is the village of Hartington.

High Wheeldon is a distinctive dome-shaped hill near the Staffordshire border in Hartington Middle Quarter civil parish, Derbyshire, in the Peak District valley of Upper Dovedale, overlooking the villages of Earl Sterndale, Longnor and Crowdecote. It is close to the more distinctive and more widely known Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill. Popular with walkers, and possessing excellent views of the Dove and Manifold valleys, High Wheeldon is in the care of the National Trust, and has been since 1946 when it was presented by Mr F.A. Holmes of Buxton to the Trust as a war memorial. A plaque at the summit commemorates the presentation, stating that the hill was presented 'in honoured memory of the men of Derbyshire and Staffordshire who fell in the Second World War'. Slightly below the summit of the hill is a rock shelter called Fox Hole Cave, which is closed by an iron gate as it has archaeological significance. Items, including Peterborough ware, early Bronze Age pottery, a stone axe, flint microliths and animal bones, have been found in the cave, which is believed to have been used from the Upper Paleolithic. The cave is a scheduled monument.

The White Peak, also known as the Low Peak, is a limestone plateau that forms the central and southern part of the Peak District in England. It is mostly between 270 metres (900 ft) and 430 metres (1,400 ft) above sea-level and is enclosed by the higher altitude Dark Peak (also known as the High Peak) to the west, north and east.
