The Marin County Civic Center attacks were two related domestic terrorist attacks in 1970 targeting the Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael, California, United States, tied to escalating racial tensions in the state's criminal justice system. On August 7th, 17-year-old Jonathan P. Jackson attempted to coerce the release of the Soledad Brothers (including Jackson's older brother George) by kidnapping Superior Court judge Harold Haley from the Marin County Civic Center. As the kidnappers attempted to leave with five hostages by car, court officers shot at Jackson's retreating van. Four people were killed in the ensuing gunfight, including Jonathan Jackson and Judge Haley, and three others were wounded. The event received intense media coverage, as did the subsequent manhunt and trial of Angela Davis, an ousted professor from UCLA with connections to George and Jonathan Jackson, and the Black Panthers. Davis owned the weapons used in the incident but stated that she had no knowledge of its happening. The second attack took place on October 8 of that year, when the Weathermen detonated explosives in support of the earlier incident.

The Marin County Civic Center, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is located in San Rafael, California, United States. Groundbreaking for the Civic Center Administration Building took place in 1960, after Wright's death and under the watch of Wright's protégé, Aaron Green; it was completed in 1962. The Hall of Justice was begun in 1966 and completed in 1969. Veterans Memorial Auditorium opened in 1971, and the Exhibit Hall opened in 1976. Northgate Mall is a shopping mall located in the Terra Linda neighborhood of San Rafael, California, 15 miles (24 km) north of the Golden Gate Bridge. It's the largest of three shopping centers in San Rafael called Northgate. It was managed by The Macerich Company until 2017 and is now managed by Merlone Geier Partners. It is the only enclosed regional shopping center in Marin County. The mall's anchors are Macy's and Kohl's with a vacant anchor last occupied by Sears. It also contains a Century Theatres multiplex, a food court, and more than 90 specialty stores, services, and restaurants. The original anchor in the corner, now occupied by Macy's, was The Emporium, which opened in 1964. When the rest of the mall opened in 1965, it had an open-air design. The mall was enclosed when it was renovated in 1987. MTR Properties, Inc. was the original owner of the mall. Macerich bought the property in 1985 before selling it to Merlone Geier Partners in 2017. On January 4, 2018, Sears announced that its store at the mall will be closing as part of a plan to close 103 stores nationwide. The store closed in April 2018. Around the same time, plans were announced that would transform the mall into a "town center."On November 14, 2019, Forever 21 announced that the Northgate Mall location would be closing along with 21 other locations in California and 90 locations nationwide. It closed in January 2020.

Los Ranchitos (Spanish for The Little Ranches) is an unincorporated community in Marin County, California, United States. It lies at an elevation of 66 feet (20 m).Los Ranchitos was developed in 1949 into lots of at least one acre in size, with most averaging 1-2 acres. There are covenants on record describing allowable use of the lots, as well as a Los Ranchitos Improvement Association, which has been continuously active since the 1950s. It does have a distinctly rural feel and is zoned agricultural and light farming with many lots having stables, horses, chickens, and goats. As an unincorporated area, it falls under county jurisdiction and the area serves as a regional community separator between San Rafael and Terra Linda. It also shares boundaries with San Rafael's Open Space, administered by the Marin County Open Space District, and is actively used as a major wildlife corridor.

Puerto Suello Tunnel is a rail tunnel in San Rafael, California. It was constructed in 1879, by the San Francisco and North Pacific Railroad and is a quarter-mile long.

Terra Linda (Portuguese for "Beautiful Land") is a district of the city of San Rafael, California. It was formerly an unincorporated community within Marin County. It lies at an elevation of 171 feet (52 m).Terra Linda is a residential and light commercial/office community in the Las Gallinas Valley area of Marin County, approximately 14 miles (23 km) north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The housing stock includes about 900 residences built by Joseph Eichler.

Terra Linda High School (also known as TLHS and more commonly known as TL) is a public secondary school located in Terra Linda, San Rafael, California, United States. In 2006, it was named a California Distinguished School. The school is part of the San Rafael City Schools school district. The official school mascot is the Trojan. Residents of the high school district may choose either Terra Linda High or San Rafael High School. The high school district includes San Rafael, Santa Venetia, Lucas Valley-Marinwood, and a portion of Larkspur.
