Potter Heigham

Potter Heigham railway station was a railway station in Norfolk. It was on the line between Melton Constable and Great Yarmouth. It closed in 1959. In 2012 still in situ is the platform wall, some of the stations buildings and an old signal being used by Richardson's dry dock. You can trace the old line a good few miles to Stalham.

Potter Heigham Bridge Halt was a railway station on the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway which was opened to serve the boating traffic on the River Thurne. It was more conveniently situated to the Norfolk village of Potter Heigham than Potter Heigham station itself.

Ludham - Potter Heigham Marshes is a 101.5-hectare (251-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-east of Norwich in Norfolk. Part of the site is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I, and a National Nature Reserve. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.This is described by Natural England as "both a nationally important wetland site and one of the richest areas of traditionally managed grazing marsh and dykes now remaining in Broadland". The principal conservation lies in the aquatic flora and fauna of the dykes, especially the dragonflies.Public footpaths cross the site.

Repps with Bastwick is a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It comprises the adjacent villages of Bastwick and Repps, which are situated some 16 km (9.9 mi) north-west of the town of Great Yarmouth and 22 km (14 mi) north-east of the city of Norwich. The parish borders the River Thurne and Bastwick is at the south end of the bridge which carries the A149 road over that river to the village of Potter Heigham.The civil parish has an area of 5.1 km2 (2.0 sq mi) and in the 2001 census had a population of 401 in 172 households, the population reducing to 391 in the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of Great Yarmouth.The church of Repps-with-Bastwick St Peter is one of 124 existing round-tower churches in Norfolk.

Hickling Broad is a 600-hectare (1,500-acre) nature reserve 4 km south-east of Stalham, north-east of Norwich in Norfolk. It is managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. It is a National Nature Reserve and part of the Upper Thurne Broads and Marshes Site of Special Scientific Interest and Hickling Broad and Horsey Mere Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I. It is in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.It is the broad with the largest surface area, and the water is slightly brackish, due to its proximity to the sea. The navigation channel is only 1.5 m deep, with much of the broad being shallower; it is 1.4 km2, making it one of the largest expanses of open water in East Anglia.

Shallam Dyke Marshes, Thurne is a 69.8-hectare (172-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south-east of Norwich in Norfolk. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.This is grazing marsh in the valley of the River Thurne, and it is important for waders such as lapwings, oystercatchers and snipe. There are a variety of water plants such as the rare water soldier.

Hickling Mill is a 19th-century grade II* listed windmill in Hickling Heath, Norfolk, England.It was built of tarred brick in 1818 to a design known as a tower mill, a tapering circular building 8 storeys high with brickwork 30 inches (76 cm) thick at the base. Each floor has 4 windows to the four cardinal points of the compass although many are blocked up on the inside, especially on the north face. It is topped by a weatherboarded boat-shaped cap with a petticoat and fan cradle. The mill was used for grinding wheat for flour and by the 1860s also included a bakery. Production ceased in 1904, at which time the sails and fantail were removed.After several changes of ownership the mill in 1934 came into the ownership of the Forbes family, who carried out major cap renovation in 1989. Otherwise Hickling Mill is one of the few windmills in the country to have been preserved in a largely unrestored condition. It still contains almost a complete set of main machinery and many of the original timber fittings and three sets of millstones.

Upper Thurne Broads and Marshes is a 1,185.9-hectare (2,930-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. Part of it is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I, and it is in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation. Two areas, Hickling Broad and Martham Broad, are national nature reserves managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.This is one of the finest wetland complexes in Britain, and it is internationally important for its wetland plant communities and associated animal species. It has four lakes, Hickling Broad, Heigham Sound, Horsey Mere and Martham Broad, together with smaller water bodies, swamp, fen, woodland and grazing marsh.

Thurne is a small village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is located on the River Thurne in The Broads, some 18 km (11 mi) west of the town of Great Yarmouth and 20 km (12 mi) east of the city of Norwich.The village's name means 'Thorn-bush'.The civil parish has an area of 2.69 km2 (1.04 sq mi) and in the 2001 census had a population of 116 in 54 households and at the 2011 Census, including Ashby with Oby, had a population of 212 in 94 households. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of Great Yarmouth.The village lies at the end of Thurne Dyke, a popular mooring, not least because of Thurne windpump, which became known locally as Morse's Mill, Bob Morse, who purchased it to prevent it from being sold for scrap. It is a popular object for photography, after being painted white. There is a second windpump across the river, the St Benet's Level windpump. Thurne is also home to the well-respected sailing club Theta, which has been accommodated here for over half a century and is now part of the village's character. Free moorings are available for three boats at Thurne mouth. From there, it is a short walk to the village, with a large pub, the Lion Inn, and a small shop. The Weavers' Way, a long-distance footpath, runs through the village.

Ludham is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk, in the Norfolk Broads, at the end of a dyke leading to Womack Water and flowing into the River Thurne. It lies 1.5 miles (2.4 km) to the East of Ludham Bridge, which is on the River Ant. It covers an area of 12.18 km2 (4.70 sq mi) and had a population of 1,301 in 582 households at the 2001 census, the population reducing to 1,278 at the 2011 census. For the purposes of local government, it falls within the district of North Norfolk. The villages name origin is unsure possibly, 'Luda's homestead/village' but perhaps, 'homestead/village on the Hlude (= noisy one)', an old name for Womack Water. It is part of the Ludham - Potter Heigham NNR, a national nature reserve. The village gave its name to a Ham-class minesweeper, HMS Ludham and also, in geology, to an age/stage (the Ludhamian) in the British regional subdivision of the Pleistocene Series/Epoch. It also effectively gives its name to the preceding age/underlying stage known as the Pre-Ludhamian.

Ashby with Oby is a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk, which is located some 5 km or 3 miles north of Acle and 15 km or 9 miles north-west of Great Yarmouth. It named for the deserted mediaeval villages of Ashby and Oby, with their lost churches.
