Hickling Broad

Upper Thurne Broads and Marshes is a 1,185.9-hectare (2,930-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. Part of it is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I, and it is in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation. Two areas, Hickling Broad and Martham Broad, are national nature reserves managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.This is one of the finest wetland complexes in Britain, and it is internationally important for its wetland plant communities and associated animal species. It has four lakes, Hickling Broad, Heigham Sound, Horsey Mere and Martham Broad, together with smaller water bodies, swamp, fen, woodland and grazing marsh.

Stubb Drainage Windmill is 1.9 miles east of Hickling in the English county of Norfolk. The Windmill is a Grade II listed building and was given this status on 30 September 1987. The estimate is that there were once about 200 wind powered drainage windmills in the Broadlands. Stubb Drainage windmill is listed as one that is at risk of decay by Norfolk County Council.

Heigham Holmes is a national nature reserve located within the Norfolk Broads in the English county of Norfolk. The reserve is, in effect, an island, being surrounded by the river channels, drainage ditches and wetland areas of the Broads. It is only accessible by an unusual floating swing bridge across the River Thurne from the village of Martham.The reserve is owned by the National Trust and is within the Broads National Park and the civil parish of Potter Heigham. It is only opened to the public for one day a year.It has been suggested that Heigham Holmes was used by the Special Operations Executive as a secret airfield between 1940 and 1944, with Lysander aircraft operating from the airfield to ferry agents to occupied Europe. However, no evidence of an airfield has been found in any records (military or local), maps or on aerial photographs, and any military-type structures that may have existed would appear to have been removed by the end of the Second World War, therefore any such usage cannot be confirmed.The subject of an airfield having existed in Heigham Holmes was featured erroneously in the BBC's Secret Britain television series, first broadcast in 2010.

Hickling Priory was an Augustinian priory located in Norfolk, England. The house was founded in 1185 by Theobald, grandson of Theobald de Valognes, Lord of Parham. By 1291 the Priory had possession of thirty two Norfolk parishes and held an annual three-day All Hallows fair at Hacheston in Suffolk, close to the founders' estate at Parham.The Plague killed all but two of its brethren and the house never fully recovered, being cited repeatedly thereafter by episcopal authorities for deteriorated buildings and lax observance by the canons.The Visitations by the Bishops of Norwich shed some light on the Priory's last years.The Priory acknowledged the king's supremacy on 4 June 1534. The Valor of 1535 gave its value as £100 with their most valuable possession being the nearby manor of Hickling. The house was dissolved in 1536. Today ruined portions of the church and claustral buildings survive on the privately owned Priory Farm in Hickling.

Lambridge Mill also known as Lambrigg Mill is a wind pump located in the parish of Sea Palling within the Norfolk Broads National Park, United Kingdom and can be found at grid reference grid reference TG431252, it is approximately 2 miles southwest of Waxham. The wind pump is a grade II listed building.The current wind pump at this location was built c. 1865 and it fell out of use around 1937. The Mill was built to drain the nearby Long Gore Marsh (located to the south of the mill) along with the Brograve Levels as a helper mill for its much older neighbour Brograve Mill. Both this mill and Brograve Mill drained the levels into the Waxham New Cut via the same drainage channel. The name of the mill is also somewhat disputed, as the current Ordnance Survey Explorer map states the name of the mill as Lambrigg Mill. The name Lambridge, however, corresponds with the names of the nearby Lambridge Mill Farm and Lambridge Mill Cottage. The mill still stands today in a derelict state with only two of the original four stocks remaining, these being precariously perched on top of the brickwork attached to the exposed iron windshaft. Only a small rotten section of the original cap remains. It is difficult to directly reach the mill due to it being located within the private garden of Lambridge Mill Cottage; no public rights of way run nearby. However, it is possible to get relatively close to the structure via the Waxham New Cut, the mill is well beyond the limit of navigation, therefore only small non-motorised craft may venture this far up the river.

Hickling Mill is a 19th-century grade II* listed windmill in Hickling Heath, Norfolk, England.It was built of tarred brick in 1818 to a design known as a tower mill, a tapering circular building 8 storeys high with brickwork 30 inches (76 cm) thick at the base. Each floor has 4 windows to the four cardinal points of the compass although many are blocked up on the inside, especially on the north face. It is topped by a weatherboarded boat-shaped cap with a petticoat and fan cradle. The mill was used for grinding wheat for flour and by the 1860s also included a bakery. Production ceased in 1904, at which time the sails and fantail were removed.After several changes of ownership the mill in 1934 came into the ownership of the Forbes family, who carried out major cap renovation in 1989. Otherwise Hickling Mill is one of the few windmills in the country to have been preserved in a largely unrestored condition. It still contains almost a complete set of main machinery and many of the original timber fittings and three sets of millstones.

Hickling Hall was a grade II listed house in Hickling, Norfolk, England. Dating from the 18th century, it was destroyed by fire on Boxing Day, 26 December 2014.The building was made from brick, with a slate roof, and had two stories across seven bays, with a dormer roof. It was accorded grade II status in 1955. The hall is currently being rebuilt. As of mid-summer 2016, missing brickwork has been replaced and new floors have been fitted.

Horsey Mere is one of the Norfolk Broads in the east of England; it is one of the more northerly broads close to the North Sea coast. It is reached by Hickling Broad and the River Thurne. The nearest settlements are Horsey and West Somerton. Horsey Mere is part of Upper Thurne Broads and Marshes, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The mere is owned by the National Trust, as is Horsey Windpump.The mere has a catchment area of 82 hectares (200 acres), a maximum depth of 1.5 metres (4 ft 11 in), and a surface area of 33 hectares (82 acres). The volume of water held in the mere is approximately 491,313 cubic metres (17,350,600 cu ft).

Hickling is a village and a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. The village is 22 miles south-east of Cromer, 20.3 miles north-east of Norwich and 137 miles north-east of London. The village lies 3 miles east of the Broadlands town of Stalham. The nearest railway station is at Worstead for the Bittern Line which runs between Sheringham, Cromer and Norwich. The villages name means 'Hicel's people' or perhaps, 'Hicel's place'. The village comprises two main parts, Hickling Green and Hickling Heath. Hickling Heath is the part which usually attracts the most tourists who come on boat trips and moor up at the staithe. Hickling village is situated on the edge of the Hickling Broads. By using the waterways it is possible to reach Catfield Dyke, Potter Heigham and even Great Yarmouth. Because it leads to the sea the waters are slightly tidal and, depending on the time of year, the water levels can heavily rise or fall. There are many thatched huts dotted along the broads, one of the oldest being Turner's Hut. Hickling Mill, built on Hickling Heath in 1818, is a grade II* listed windmill which is one of the few to have been preserved in almost original condition, with most of the mechanism, apart from sails and fantail, relatively intact.Adjacent to the village is the site of Hickling Priory, a house of Augustinian Canons which operated from 1185 to 1534. The 18th-century Hickling Hall was destroyed by fire in December 2014.

Brograve Mill is a windpump located on Brograve level in the parish of Sea Palling within the Norfolk Broads National Park, United Kingdom. It can be found at grid reference TG448235 and is approximately 1 mile north of Horsey Mere. The mill is a Grade II listed building.

Priory Meadows, Hickling is a 23.9-hectare (59-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south-east of North Walsham in Norfolk. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.This grassland on damp and acidic peat soil is managed traditionally, and it has a rich and diverse flora with herbs such as tormentil and marsh cinquefoil. There is also a network of dykes with aquatic plants.
