The Battle of Placentia was fought in 271 between a Roman army led by Emperor Aurelian and the Juthungi tribe, near modern Piacenza.

The Basilica of San Savino is an ancient Roman Catholic basilica in the city of Piacenza in the Province of Piacenza, Italy. It is dedicated to Saint Sabinus of Piacenza, second bishop of the city. San Savino was established as a Benedictine monastery in 903. The original construction appears to have been poor. In February 998, Pope Gregory V confirmed its right to freely elect its abbots. It was rebuilt outside the city walls by Bishop Sigifredo in 1005. The present structure is mostly a rebuild of 1107 with later modifications, although it includes a few elements from the 903 edifice. The crypt of the church has 12th-century mosaics depicting the zodiac signs on a marine background. The presbytery has a contemporary mosaic showing battle scenes and a depiction of Christ. In the 1500s, the church became property of the Hieronymite order, who reconstructed it. In the 18th century, the church interior was decorated in a Rococo style, hiding much of the original Romanesque details. In 1721, the present facade was built. Among the works of art in the church is a wooden crucifix and frescos from the 12th century and a 15th-century fresco in the presbytery depicting an Enthroned Madonna and child.In 1819, the hospice for "orphans and the exposed" (Ospizio degli Orfani ed Esposti) with 60 children was moved to the Girolamini monastery attached to San Savino. The hospice had been founded in 1573 by the then bishop, and run by the Somaschi order of clerics regular. They were affiliated with the parish church of San Stefano. The orphanage had been housed in the convent of Sant'Anna.

Piacenza is also at the confluence of the Trebbia, draining the northern Apennine Mountains, and the River Po, draining to the east. Piacenza hosts two universities, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Polytechnic University of Milan and University of Parma.

San Carlo is a Baroque style, Roman Catholic church and monastery, located in Piacenza, Italy. The church was dedicated to San Carlo Borromeo. The church was built in 17th-century and the adjacent building became a convent for a Capuchin order of nuns. The nuns were expelled in 1810, but in the late 19th century, the church passed to the missionary order established by the former bishop of the town, Giovanni Battista Scalabrini (died 1905). The church and the monastery were reconstructed in the second half of the twentieth century, altering the two cloisters.The church contains a venerated statue of the Child Jesus originally from the Church of San Gervasio.

Piacenza Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Piacenza), fully the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta e Santa Giustina, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Piacenza, Italy. The current structure was built between 1122 and 1233 and is one of the most valuable examples of a Romanesque cathedral in northern Italy. The dedication is to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and to Saint Justina. It is the seat of the diocese of Piacenza-Bobbio.

The Church of Benedictines (Italian: Chiesa delle Benedettine) and its attached convent are a Baroque-style Roman Catholic church and monastery, located in central Piacenza, Emilia Romagna region, Italy.

The Oratory of San Cristoforo is a deconsecrated former Roman Catholic church or chapel located at the chamfered corner of Vie Gregorio X and Angelo Genocchi, in the north-central sector of the historic center of Piacenza, Italy. It rises a block North West of the former Chiesa Sacro Cuore (Gesu) erected by the Jesuits and now housing the Teatro Gioia. The oratory presently houses an exposition space and museum named the Piccolo Museo della Poesia (Small Museum of Poetry). The centralized structure was once known as the Oratorio della Morte (Oratory of Death) because it belonged to the confraternity of the same name, a group that subsidized the burial and memorial rites of its members. The architect was the Duchal architect, Domenico Valmagina. The elaborate interior was frescoed with quadratura by Ferdinando Galli Bibiena. In an 1842 inventory, the church had an altarpiece depicting the Virgin and St Gregory by Roberto da Longe. A confraternity, previously dedicated to St Cristopher, was previously based first at the church of Santa Maria dell’Argine Church since 1260, and in the 16th Century it was fused with the Confraternity della Morte which had moved to San Silvestro Church, next to a Benedictine order monastery. In 1686 this structure was commissioned, with patronage from Conte Roncovieri, and inaugurated in 1690. During the Napoleonic invasion, the church was closed, and only reopened for cult later in the 19th century. Restorations did not start until 1960s, and the building was reopened in 2003. Since September 2020 it has been home to the museum of poetry.

The Museo di Storia Naturale is the Natural History museum located Via Scalabrini 107 in Piacenza, Italy. The museum was established in a former abbatoir or Macello. The area also houses the Polo Territoriale di Piacenza del Politecnico di Milano or the branch of the Milanese public scientific-technological university. The local branch is focused on technology useful for architectural design, including model building.

San Vincenzo is a Baroque style, Roman Catholic church, now deconsecrated, located at Via Scalabrini #6 in the South-East quadrant of Piacenza, Region of Emilia Romagna, Italy. The church was restored starting in 2009 for use as an auditorium (Sala dei Teatini) and to host concerts.
