Paredes (parish)

Paredes (European Portuguese pronunciation: [pɐˈɾeðɨʃ] ) is a city and a municipality in Porto District, in northern Portugal. The population in 2021 was 84,354, in an area of 156.76 square kilometres (60.53 sq mi). Currently, Paredes Municipality contains four cities: Paredes, Rebordosa, São Salvador de Lordelo and Gandra, being the Portuguese municipality with the most cities. Paredes has a total of 18 parishes. The municipality is bordered on the north by the municipality of Paços de Ferreira, to the east by Lousada and Penafiel, to the southwest by Gondomar and to the west by Valongo. The municipality was created in 1836.

The Paredes Municipal Chamber (Portuguese: Câmara Municipal de Paredes) is the administrative authority in the municipality of Paredes. It has 18 freguesias in its area of jurisdiction and is based in the city of Paredes, on the Porto District. These freguesias are: Aguiar de Sousa, Astromil, Baltar, Beire, Cete, Cristelo, Duas Igrejas, Gandra, Lordelo, Louredo, Parada de Todeia, Paredes, Rebordosa, Recarei, Sobreira, Sobrosa, Vandoma and Vilela. The Paredes City Council is made up of 9 councillors, representing, currently, two different political forces. The first candidate on the list with the most votes in a municipal election or, in the event of a vacancy, the next candidate on the list, takes office as President of the Municipal Chamber.

Castelões de Cepeda is a former civil parish in the municipality of Paredes, Portugal. In 2013, the parish merged into the new parish Paredes. The population in 2011 was 8,755, in an area of 3.28 km². It contained the city centre of Paredes.

Besteiros is a former civil parish in the municipality of Paredes, Portugal. In 2013, the parish merged into the new parish Paredes. The population in 2011 was 1,448, in an area of 2.13 km².

Cete is a Portuguese freguesia ("civil parish") of the municipality of Paredes. The population in 2011 was 3,113, in an area of 4.68 km².

Cristelo is a parish of the municipality of Paredes, Portugal. The population in 2011 was 1,891, in an area of 2.02 km2.

Duas Igrejas is a Portuguese parish of the municipality of Paredes. The population in 2011 was 3,879, in an area of 3.78 km².

Baltar is a parish in Paredes Municipality in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 4,818, in an area of 7.41 km².

Figueiras e Covas is a civil parish in the municipality of Lousada, Portugal. It was formed in 2013 by the merger of the former parishes Figueiras and Covas. The population in 2011 was 2,108, in an area of 4.34 km².

Rebordosa (Portuguese pronunciation: [ʁɨβuɾˈðɔzɐ]) is a civil parish in the municipality of Paredes, in the northern subregion of Tâmega. The population in 2011 was 9,106, in an area of 10.76 km². It is approximately 20 kilometres (12 mi) east of the centre of Porto.

Freamunde is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Paços de Ferreira. The population in 2011 was 7,789, in an area of 5.15 km².

Lordelo, often known as São Salvador de Lordelo, is a city located in Paredes Municipality, Porto District, Portugal. The former town was elevated to the status of a city in 2003; although it was proposed at that time that the name should be changed to São Salvador de Lordelo the law as enacted retained the name of Lordelo.
