Burston and Shimpling

Burston is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Burston and Shimpling, in the South Norfolk district, in the county of Norfolk, England, 3 miles (4.5 km) north of Diss. In 1931 the parish had a population of 279. In the 2011 Census, Burston and Shimpling had a population of 568 people in 234 households.

Burston railway station was on the Diss to Norwich line and served the village of Burston, Norfolk. Only the station building remains; the signal box has been removed and very little evidence of the platforms or sidings exist. A cottage between the railway line and the station master's house was also demolished.The railway line still passes through it on a level crossing.

The Burston Strike School was founded as a consequence of a school strike and became the centre of the longest running strike in British history, that lasted from 1914 to 1939 in the village of Burston in Norfolk, England. Today, the building stands as a museum to the strike. Every year hundreds of people turn up for a rally to commemorate the 25-year strike over the jobs of Annie Higdon and her husband.

It is 19 miles south of Norwich and lay on the old Roman road to Venta Icenorum, which was the main road until it was bypassed with a dual carriageway. It covers an area of 14.31 km2 (5.53 sq mi) and had a population of 1,339 in 563 households at the 2001 census; the population had increased to 1,367 at the 2011 Census.It lies on the north bank of the River Waveney. Diss railway station is on the Great Eastern Main Line in the East of England, serving the market town of Diss, Norfolk. It is 94 miles 43 chains (152.1 km) down the line from London Liverpool Street and is situated between Stowmarket to the south and Norwich to the north. It is approximately 20 miles (32 km) south of Norwich. Its three-letter station code is DIS. The station is currently operated by Greater Anglia, who also operate all trains serving it, as part of the East Anglia franchise. Due to its location, Diss is the only station on the Greater Anglia network (and, by extension, one of the only stations in the UK) to be served exclusively by inter-city trains.
