Geilston

Geilston Garden is a property of the National Trust for Scotland, north-west of Cardross, Argyll and Bute. Geilston Garden was developed more than two hundred years ago with a date given for its development being 1797, combining several features (traditional walled garden, kitchen garden, wooded area). The walled garden has a dominating 100-foot Wellingtonia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) in the centre of the lawn. The Geilston burn wends its way through the north of the estate towards the River Clyde in Cardross. The origins of the garden were most likely a result of the 1770 Montgomery Act, which saw the land around the house enclosed and planting undertaken.Geilston was opened to the public with the death of the last resident, Margaret Bell, who was a friend of Elizabeth Hendry, the owner of Geilston who bequeathed the house to the National trust for Scotland and gave her friend life rent of the house. The Hendrys moved into Geilston as tenants but the family bought the house from the Geils in 1922. The garden as it appears today was mostly laid out by Elizabeth Hendry and Margaret Bell. A cannon within the garden is said to have been a trophy from the Battle of Corunna brought to the Garden by Major General Geils, a previous owner of Geilston.The kitchen garden is the most labour-intensive area. It springs to life in April with the first sowings of carrots, parsnips and beetroot closely followed by transplanted brassicas. Visitors can buy in-season produce from a small stand at the garden's entrance. The walled garden is the focus of spring colour with azaleas, heathers and unusual shrubs such as Cornus kousa 'Satomi'. Summer colour is provided by the spectacularly vigorous species in the long herbaceous border – Thalictrum, Filipendula, Eupatorium, Helenium, Phlox and Sidalcea dominate the display. The garden is open from April to October daily. The adjacent Geilston House is not open to the public.

Cardross (Scottish Gaelic: Càrdainn Ros) is a large village with a population of 2,194 (2011) in Scotland, on the north side of the Firth of Clyde, situated halfway between Dumbarton and Helensburgh. Cardross is in the historic geographical county of Dunbartonshire but the modern political local authority of Argyll and Bute. Cardross Village took its name from the historic parish in which it is located and where King Robert the Bruce lived the final years of his life. The Parish of Cardross stretched in area from the River Leven on the west side of Dumbarton to Camus Eskan (near Helensburgh), and stretched as far north to include the village of Renton in the Vale of Leven. The distinction between Cardross village and Cardross Parish is particularly important for students of Scottish history. King Robert the Bruce's documented association with ’Cardross’ occurred three centuries prior to the existence of the modern-day village, and at a time when the name referred to the ecclesiastical parish and its church, Cardross Kirk. The original piece of land known as ’Cardross’ is at the eastern edge of the historic parish and the western point of the confluence of the River Clyde and River Leven at the town of Dumbarton, facing across to Dumbarton Rock and Castle. Today the land is known as “sand point” and sits on the edge of Dumbarton's Levengrove Park. The site of medieval Cardross Kirk, and its remains, sits within Levengrove Park.

Cardross railway station is a railway station serving the village of Cardross, Scotland. The station is 19 miles 50 chains (31.6 km) from Glasgow Queen Street, measured via Singer and Maryhill. It is on the North Clyde Line between Dalreoch and Craigendoran, positioned on the banks of the north side of the River Clyde. The station is managed by ScotRail, who operate all services.

Kilmahew Burn is a small river, burn, that runs from the Kilmahew estate into the Firth of Clyde. It flows close by the ruins of Kilmahew Castle and St Peter's Seminary and passes through the town of Cardross. The bridge over it in Cardross that carries the main road is named Moore's Bridge and was built in 1688.

Kilmahew Castle is a ruined castle located just north of Cardross, in the council area of Argyll and Bute, Scotland. The castle is close by the ruins of St. Peter's Seminary. Also close by is Kilmahew Burn. Kilmahew is named after its patron saint, Mochta (Mahew).

St. Peter's Seminary is a former Roman Catholic seminary near Cardross, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Designed by the firm of Gillespie, Kidd & Coia, it has been described by the international architecture conservation organisation DOCOMOMO as a modern "building of world significance". It is one of only 42 post-war buildings in Scotland to be listed at Category A, the highest level of protection for a building of "special architectural or historic interest". It has been abandoned since 1987, and is currently in a ruinous state. In July 2020, the site was given to the Kilmahew Education Trust Ltd who plan to reinstate the educational elements of the Seminary Complex after conservation and restoration.

Colgrain is a village in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, located to the east of Helensburgh.The name Colgrain is known from at least 1377 when Sir William Denzeltoun (of Colgrane) gives his consent to a grant made by his father, Sir John Denzeltoun of that Ilk, to the church of Glasgow.

The Inner Clyde Estuary is a nature reserve and protected wetland area in the estuary of the River Clyde, on the west coast of central Scotland. An area of 1,826 hectares (4,510 acres) has been designated since 2000 as a Ramsar Site, a Special Protection Area and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.The protected area of the estuary stretches from Clydebank to Colgrain on the north bank, and from Erskine to Port Glasgow in the south. Although the surrounding areas are heavily industrialised, the tidal mudflats and saltmarsh of the river estuary support large numbers of waders and waterbirds. Internationally important populations of common redshank overwinter on the estuary, along with nationally important numbers of cormorants, eiders, goldeneyes, oystercatchers, red-breasted mergansers, red-throated divers and scaups.

Newark Castle is a well-preserved castle sited on the south shore of the estuary of the River Clyde in Port Glasgow, Inverclyde, Scotland, where the firth gradually narrows from the Firth of Clyde and navigation upriver is made difficult by shifting sandbanks. For centuries this location was used to offload seagoing ships, and led to the growth of Port Glasgow close to the castle on either side and to the south. When dredging techniques made the Clyde navigable as far as Glasgow the port became a shipbuilding centre, and the castle was surrounded by shipyards. Ferguson Shipbuilders, the last shipyard on the lower Clyde, stands close to the west of the castle, but the shipyards to the east were removed around the 1980s and new landscaped areas formed to the east of Newark Castle, opening up scenic views of the castle and across the Clyde from a new bypass road.

Woodhall railway station serves the eastern part of the town of Port Glasgow in Inverclyde, Scotland. The station is sited in the Woodhall area and is 19 miles (31 km) west of Glasgow Central on the Inverclyde Line. Woodhall station is staffed only on Monday to Saturday in the daytime.

Clune Park was a football ground in Port Glasgow, Scotland. It was the home ground of Port Glasgow Athletic from 1881 until they folded in 1912, and also of Port Glasgow Athletic Juniors.

Clune Park Church Of Scotland, Robert Street, Port Glasgow is a disused church in the town of Port Glasgow, Scotland. It is located on the partly abandoned Clune Park Estate and was originally built in 1905 for use by the then-new estate. It was in use for a while until 1997 when it was closed for unknown reasons and left abandoned since. The estate it is on has since declined and is in the process of being possibly regenerated. This means the entire estate would be demolished and rebuilt for social housing under Inverclyde Council's masterplan for the area and this was approved. However, the church would not be demolished due to it being a listed building under category B and is currently for sale.
