Lank Rigg

Ennerdale was a rural district in the county of Cumberland in England from 1934 to 1974. It was created in 1934 by a County Review Order, by the merger of the urban districts of Arlecdon and Frizington, Cleator Moor, Egremont, and Harrington along with part of Bootle Rural District and most of Whitehaven Rural District. The district was named after Ennerdale. The council's offices were at "The Flosh", a converted nineteenth century house on Main Street, Cleator. It survived until 1974 when under the Local Government Act 1972 it was merged with other districts and the Borough of Whitehaven to form the Copeland district in Cumbria.In the neighbouring county of Westmorland a similar type of area and in fact containing fewer towns and villages namely Lakes was created at the same time as an urban district.

Whoap is a hill located near the western edge of the English Lake District, standing at 511 m. It is part of the Lank Rigg group and is separated from this fell by an unnamed col, known locally as the Whoap Step. Whoap is not listed as a Wainwright, although it is briefly mentioned in the chapters for Lank Rigg and Crag Fell in Volume 7: The Western Fells.

Ennerdale and Kinniside is a civil parish in Copeland, Cumbria, England. At the 2011 census it had a population of 220.The parish has an area of 8,763 hectares (33.83 sq mi).The village of Ennerdale Bridge is in the west of the parish; much of the parish forms Ennerdale valley, holding Ennerdale Water, the most westerly of the lakes of the Lake District. The Anglican parish church of St Mary, Ennerdale is in Ennerdale Bridge village.Ennerdale and Kinniside C of E Primary School is in Ennerdale Bridge village.There is a parish council, the lowest tier of local government.

Grike is a hill in the west of the English Lake District, near Ennerdale Water. It is part of the Lank Rigg group, the most westerly Wainwright as the fells diminish toward the coastal plain. It can be climbed from Kinniside or Ennerdale Bridge.

Crag Fell is a hill in the English Lake District. It is part of the Lank Rigg group, standing above Ennerdale Water in the Western Fells. The craggy northern face above the lake gives the fell its name, prominent in views from the car park at Bowness Knott. Ascents are commonly made from the foot of Ennerdale Water.

Ennerdale Water is the most westerly lake in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England. It is a glacial lake, with a maximum depth of 150 feet (46 metres), and is ½ mile to a mile (700 to 1,500 metres) wide and 2+1⁄2 miles (4.0 kilometres) long. The lake lies in the eponymous valley of Ennerdale, surrounded by some of the highest and best-known fells in Cumbria including: Great Gable (899 m), Green Gable, Brandreth, High Crag, Steeple and Pillar. To the west of the lake lies the hamlet of Ennerdale Bridge, consisting of two pubs and a few houses. It is close to the port of Whitehaven.

Ponsonby Fell is a hill in the west of the English Lake District, near Gosforth, in Cumberland, Cumbria. It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. It reaches 1,020 feet (310 m), and Wainwright's route is an anticlockwise horseshoe starting at Gosforth, following the River Bleng before striking north for the summit, then descending to Wellington from where he recommends taking a bus back to Gosforth rather than walk along the A595 road ("it is busy, dangerous, and has no footpath"). Wainwright says: "There are no fells not worth climbing, but Ponsonby Fell is very nearly in their category", and describes the summit as "attained with a conviction that nobody has ever been there before", which conviction is then contradicted by the presence of a small cairn.

Iron Crag is a mountain in the English Lake District, standing between Crag Fell and Caw Fell. The name of the fell is the source of some confusion, as the summit is unnamed on Ordnance Survey maps. Iron Crag apparently refers to the rocky outcrop below the summit, while the lower slopes are referred to as Ennerdale Fell. The Western aspect of the lower slopes, facing Ennerdale Water is known as The Side.

Ennerdale Bridge is a hamlet in the county of Cumbria, England. It is in the civil parish of Ennerdale and Kinniside. It had a total population taken at the 2011 census of 220.

Kinniside Stone Circle (or Blakeley Raise Stone Circle) is a reconstructed stone circle in the civil parish of Ennerdale and Kinniside in Cumbria, England (grid reference NY060140).

Cold Fell is a hill in the west of the English Lake District. It is easily climbed from the road between Ennerdale Bridge and Calder Bridge. This road is in fact known as Cold Fell Road and is used by many Sellafield employees living in Cockermouth. The fell is grassy and nowhere steep. The summit is very flat but offers a view of the west Cumbrian coastline and Sellafield. Cold Fell is home to a group of horses which roam freely about a number of fells in the area. Cold Fell is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. Unusually he does not specify a route of ascent, saying: "If, with the aid of the map only, you cannot find the top of Cold Fell, then take some good advice, old man, and pack it in." He lists the height as 955 feet (291 m).

Great Borne is a fell in the English Lake District with a height of 616 m (2,021 ft). It is a rather secluded hill situated at the western end of the long ridge which divides the Ennerdale and Buttermere valleys.
