Spaarne

Spaarndam is a village in the province of North Holland, the Netherlands, on the Spaarne river and the IJ lake. The oldest part of the village, on the western side of the Spaarne, belongs to the municipality of Haarlem; the newer part on the eastern side is a part of the municipality of Haarlemmermeer. The village is built around a dam in the river, which is also the division line of the two municipalities. Spaarndam was created around a dam where the river Spaarne flows into the IJ. This dam was built here by count Floris V of Holland in 1285. The village collected tolls at this dam, and people made their living from fishing. From 1812 to 1927, the western part of Spaarndam was an independent municipality. The village has some tourism, and many people commute to Amsterdam and Haarlem. Spaarndam has always been strongly connected to water. Besides the river and the fishing, it is also famous because of a story within the 1865 American novel, Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates, about a Dutch boy, "The Hero of Haarlem," who stuck his finger in a dike to prevent the town from flooding. The story became a popular legend in America, and in 1950 the local tourist bureau put a statue of this character in Spaarndam.

Penningsveer is a town in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Haarlemmermeer and lies about 3 km (1.9 mi) east of Haarlem. The town is named after the ferry (Dutch:veer) that (for a penny) used to take travellers across the Liede. Travellers over land on their way to Amsterdam would pass through Spaarnwoude before reaching Halfweg. That route became obsolete when the Haarlemmertrekvaart was dug in 1631.

Spaarnwoude is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Haarlemmermeer and lies about 5 km (3.1 mi) northeast of Haarlem.

Veerplas (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌveːrˈplɑs] (listen)) is an artificial lake directly east of the Dutch city of Haarlem. It was dug in 1994, mainly for recreation purposes and forms part of the Spaarnwoude recreational area. The lake measures 450 by 400 metres. The southern shore is formed by a constructed wetland used for water purification. Large numbers of waterfowl may be found here and along the swampy eastern shore during the winter season (e.g. greylag geese, wigeons, common goldeneyes). The local angling club has released carps into the lake. A sandy beach measuring some 300 m was created at the western shore. An area sufficiently shallow to accommodate safe swimming by inexperienced bathers is cordoned off. Furthermore, a grassy sunbathing area sporting a public toilet adjoins the lake, as well as a children's adventure playground. The lake is only a short walking distance from Haarlem Spaarnwoude railway station and relatively close to the A200 and A9 motorways. This favourable location has helped to make it a popular area for organising mid to large-scale events. Thus, 2006 saw the Circus Herman Renz pitch its tent alongside the lake.

The Liede is a little river that used to connect Haarlem Lake with the Spaarne, just south of Spaarndam, at a small lake called the Mooie Nel. After the lake was pumped dry in 1852, the Liede became a side-river of the Ringvaart. The Liede and Mooie Nel are nowadays important for recreational boat sailing. There is also an ice-skating club called De Liede.

Velserbroek is a town in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Velsen. Velserbroek is planned town for the Velsen region and was developed from 1985 onwards.

Haarlem Stadion (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦaːrlɛm ˌstaːdiˌjɔn]) is a stadium in Sportweg 8, Haarlem, Netherlands, and the home stadium of the Dutch amateur football club Haarlem Kennemerland. Formerly home of the defunct professional football club HFC Haarlem, the stadium is located in the north of Haarlem. It was built in 1907, with renovations in 1947 and during the eighties, including the replacement of the south stand, which is an all-seater stand. Today, the stadium consists of two all-seater stands, with the east and west stands now unused since they no longer conform to the modern safety standards of today's football. The total capacity is 3,442 with 600 seats allocated to the visiting team.

Haarlemmerliede is a small village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Haarlemmermeer and lies about 4 km (2.5 mi) east of Haarlem. Haarlemmerliede was a separate municipality between 1817 and 1857, when it merged with Spaarnwoude. The resulting municipality of Haarlemmerliede en Spaarnwoude was later merged with Haarlemmermeer, in 2019.The statistical area "Haarlemmerliede", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 300.

Haarlem Spaarnwoude is a railway station in Haarlem, Netherlands. It is located east of the Haarlem city centre and south of Spaarnwoude, on the Amsterdam–Rotterdam railway. The N200 road (from Amsterdam to Haarlem) runs parallel to the railway on the south side. The station opened on 24 May 1998. On the north side of the station is an IKEA store.

Barrel Organ Museum Haarlem (Dutch: Draaiorgelmuseum Haarlem) is a museum in Haarlem in the Netherlands. Next to the presentation of a variety of barrel organs, accessory objects and documentation material, there is a ball room where music of the organs is being played. The museum was opened in 1969 by the foundation Het Kunkels Orgel. Since 2014 it has its current location at a business park at the Küppersweg.

Schoten (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈsxoːtə(n)] (listen)) is a former village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It was located between Haarlem and Santpoort. Schoten was a separate municipality between 1817 and 1927, when it was merged with Haarlem. The municipality consisted of the northern part of the current municipality of Haarlem, north of the old city, between the Delft and Spaarne rivers.
