Avery County, North Carolina

WECR (1130 AM) was a radio station broadcasting an adult contemporary music format. Licensed to Newland, North Carolina, United States, it served the Boone, North Carolina, area. The station was owned by Curtis Media Group, through licensee High Country Adventures, LLC. WECR transmitted with 1,000 watts by day, using a non-directional antenna. Because 1130 kHz is a clear channel frequency reserved for Class A station WBBR in New York City, WECR was required to sign-off at night to avoid interference.

It has included both a courthouse and a correctional facility. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The Avery County Jail, also known as Avery County Historical Museum, is a historic jail located at Newland, Avery County, North Carolina. It was built in 1913. It was designed by architects Wheeler & Runge in Italianate style. It is a two-story, stuccoed brick building with small one-story wings and a cross-hipped roof. A one-story wing was added in the 1960s. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Spanish Oak Mountain is a mountain in the North Carolina High Country, located southwest from the town of Newland. Its elevation reaches 4,531 ft (1,381 m). Most feeder streams from the mountain flow to the North Toe River; except for White Pine Creek, from its southeastern slope, which flows to the Linville River. The mountain is partitioned by the Eastern Continental Divide. The mountain is named after Spanish Oak, a type of red oak, which can be found on the mountain. The mountain is predominantly covered by Fraser Fir farms, a popular choice of Christmas tree.

Vale is an unincorporated community in Avery County, North Carolina, United States. It is located northwest of Newland on Old Toe River Road.

Brier Knob is a mountain in the North Carolina High Country, at the Linville community. It is wholly in the Pisgah National Forest. Its elevation reaches 4,085 feet (1,245 m). Feeder streams from the mountain flow directly into the Linville River. Brier Knob is considered the northern limit of Linville, it is flanked by NC 105 to the east and West Fork Road to the west. Unlike other mountains that surround it, there is not development on the summit of Brier Knob.

Pixie Mountain is a mountain in the North Carolina High Country, in the community of Linville. Its elevation reaches 4,058 feet (1,237 m). The mountain is adjacent to the Linville River. The Linville Bypass (NC 181) goes around Pixie Mountain on its western side; while the majority of the Linville community is on its East and North.

Weaving Room of Crossnore School, also known as Home Spun House, is a historic school building located at Crossnore, Avery County, North Carolina. It was built in 1936, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, banked, vaguely Rustic Revival-style building constructed of randomly mortared river rock. It was built to house the weaving program of the Crossnore School, an orphanage with an industrial and vocational training program. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. The building is now home to the Crossnore Weavers and Crossnore Fine Arts Gallery, a fine art gallery, weaving studio with museum exhibits, and retail shop that benefits that Crossnore School, a private children's home.

Crossnore School Historic District is a historic school campus and national historic district located at Crossnore, Avery County, North Carolina. It encompasses four contributing buildings and one contributing structure and are the oldest surviving buildings associated with the school established here in 1913. The buildings were built between 1928 and 1960, and constructed of stone, frame, or log construction, and stand 1+1⁄2 or 2 stories in height. They are the Daughters of the American Revolution Dormitory / Cooper Building (1933, 1960), E.H. Sloop Chapel (1956), DAR Chapter House (1958-1959), Garrett Memorial Hospital / Edwin Guy Building (1928, 2006-2007), bell tower (1951, 1960), and the separately listed Weaving Room of Crossnore School (1936, 1986). It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. Crossnore is one of the approved schools supported by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Linville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Avery County, North Carolina, United States. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 census with a population of 283. Centered just south of US 221 and NC 105, the community is known as a summer mountain resort and host of the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games, the largest modern Highland games events in North Carolina.

Crossnore is a town in Avery County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 143 at the 2020 census.
