Weaving Room of Crossnore School

Crossnore School Historic District is a historic school campus and national historic district located at Crossnore, Avery County, North Carolina. It encompasses four contributing buildings and one contributing structure and are the oldest surviving buildings associated with the school established here in 1913. The buildings were built between 1928 and 1960, and constructed of stone, frame, or log construction, and stand 1+1⁄2 or 2 stories in height. They are the Daughters of the American Revolution Dormitory / Cooper Building (1933, 1960), E.H. Sloop Chapel (1956), DAR Chapter House (1958-1959), Garrett Memorial Hospital / Edwin Guy Building (1928, 2006-2007), bell tower (1951, 1960), and the separately listed Weaving Room of Crossnore School (1936, 1986). It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. Crossnore is one of the approved schools supported by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Milligan Shuford Wise and Theron Colbert Dellinger Houses is a set of two historic homes located at Crossnore, Avery County, North Carolina, United States. They were built in 1926 and 1927, and are rustic 1+1⁄2-story, frame American Craftsman-style houses. The Wise House is surrounded by contributing landscaping. Also on the property are a contributing garage apartment (c. 1932–1935) and stone one-story Wise Cottage (c. 1941). It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

Crossnore Presbyterian Church is a historic Presbyterian church on US 221/NC 194 east side, opposite the junction with Dellinger Road in Crossnore, Avery County, North Carolina. It was built between 1924 and 1926, and is a one-story, "T"-plan rock building with American Craftsman influences. Also on the property is a contributing stone arch (c. 1926) and non-contributing church cemetery established about 1929. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Ray Wiseman House is a historic home located at Altamont, Avery County, North Carolina. It was built in 1941, and is a one-story, Arts-and-Crafts bungalow-reflecting the American Craftsman influence. It is considered one of the best examples of Arts and Crafts architecture in the region. The home is a good example of an upper-middle-class home of the 1940s. The interior includes well crafted chestnut woodwork and red oak floors. The floor plan includes two large bedroom suites with a private sunroom for one and a large attic/loft space with enclosed stairway. The sun room still features rare 1940's original wall paper. The original plumbing fixtures stamped (1941) can still be found in the original main bathroom off the center hall and a modern second bathroom has been added to the master bedroom. It is constructed of native river rock and is approximately 1,400 square feet. It sits on 1.5 acres of land carved out of hills to form the original roadbed for the highway in front of the property. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Altamont is an unincorporated community in Avery County, North Carolina, United States. The community is located along US 221/NC 194 (Linville Falls Highway), between the town of Crossnore and the community of Linville Falls. Altamont translates to "High Mountain." The Ray Wiseman House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Linville Falls is an unincorporated community located at the junction of Avery, Burke, and McDowell counties in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is named after Linville Falls, a nearby waterfall in the Linville Gorge Wilderness.

Pineola is an unincorporated community in Avery County, North Carolina, United States. Its boundaries roughly span a three-mile radius, from the intersection of U.S. Route 221 and North Carolina Highway 181. Pineola is the site of several businesses, including a concrete plant (Loven Ready Mix), a building supply and lumber company (Loven Lumber Company), a Campground (Down by the River Campground), an asphalt plant, a general store (Lowrey's), a sawmill (Loven Lumber Company), a boutique Salon (Timothy and Company), and a hotel (The Pineola Inn). In the center of Pineola is the hundred plus years old Pineola Presbyterian Church, which is an architectural landmark and historically significant to Avery County. A number of choose and cut Christmas tree farms dot the community for seasonal visitors. The Linville River flows through the area, and is impounded by a dam into what was the original Anthony Lake for several resort communities. The Blue Ridge Parkway passes through the southeast portion of the area.

Spanish Oak Mountain is a mountain in the North Carolina High Country, located southwest from the town of Newland. Its elevation reaches 4,531 ft (1,381 m). Most feeder streams from the mountain flow to the North Toe River; except for White Pine Creek, from its southeastern slope, which flows to the Linville River. The mountain is partitioned by the Eastern Continental Divide. The mountain is named after Spanish Oak, a type of red oak, which can be found on the mountain. The mountain is predominantly covered by Fraser Fir farms, a popular choice of Christmas tree.

Avery County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,806. The county seat is Newland. The county seat was initially established in Elk Park when the county was first formed, but was moved to Newland upon completion of the courthouse in 1912. Founded in 1911, it is the youngest of North Carolina's 100 counties.

Three Mile is an unincorporated community in Avery County, North Carolina, United States. The community is located along NC 194 (Three Mile Highway); the name is derived from the air miles-straight-line distance of three miles between US 19-E to US 221. It is a rural, unincorporated community, vs. a chartered town and is part of the Green Valley Community and fire district, near the South Toe River. The community is 4 miles from the Mitchell County line and 5 miles East of the Mitchell County Town of Spruce Pine. Due to better roads and close proximity, the area has historical ties to Spruce Pine, population 2,200, for shopping and eating, vs. to the Avery County Seat town of Newland, which is 11 miles north. Spruce Pine has several large shopping centers, several motels, numerous restaurants, bars, alcohol sales and a regional hospital. The unincorporated community of Linville Falls, 4 miles East, is where Avery, Burke and McDowell Counties converge. Burnsville in Yancey County, is 18 miles west, Asheville is 55 miles Southwest, Boone is 30 miles East and the Johnson City, Tricities TN-VA area is 50 miles north. The area has Avery County's only section of 4-lane highway; a 2-mile section of US 19E, extending from the Gushers Knob Road intersection, to the Toe River bridge at Schoolhouse Mine. The NC DOT has planned that section of highway for expansion to 4 lanes for 3 miles, from the Toe River bridge to connect with the 4-lane, US 19E Highway at the city limits of Spruce Pine. 19E was extended in October of 2020 from Spruce Pine, all of the way to Interstate 26 in Madison County, near Mars Hill, making travel to the Asheville area much faster. There are several major, regional employers nearby: Mayland Community College-Main Campus, Schoolhouse Mine mica and quartz mine owned by Sibelco and 2 large side-by-side NC State Prisons; Mountain View and Avery-Mitchell. The community area also has several churches, the Avery County Airport (7A8); a public, a regional airport with a paved, 3100 foot runway for general aviation with,several hangars, and aviation fuel, but no tower or rescue crew, Riverside P-5 Elementary School, Green Valley Fire Station, an Avery county park, an Avery County EMS station, a campground, 2 tombstone shops, an automotive garage, a shooting range, along with several small stores and a public landfill. There Mile's children residents attend Riverside Elementary School grades P-5, then Avery Middle School in Newland for grades 6-8 and then the adjacent county's sole central high school, Avery County High School, for grades 9-12, along with classes for high school students at Mayland Community College. Avery County School buses provide transportation, as does Avery County transportation.
