Sandholme, East Riding of Yorkshire

Sandholme railway station was a station on the Hull and Barnsley Railway, and served the hamlet of Sandholme in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The station opened on 27 July 1885, it was closed to passengers on 1 August 1955 and closed completely on 6 April 1959.

Gilberdyke lies near to Howden which is 5 miles (8 km) away. It lies on the B1230 road, 1 mile (2 km) south of the M62 motorway. The civil parish is formed by the village of Gilberdyke and the hamlets of Bennetland, Hive, Sandholme and Scalby. According to the 2011 UK Census, Gilberdyke parish had a population of 3,430, an increase on the 2001 UK Census figure of 3,028. The village is served by Gilberdyke railway station with trains operating between Scarborough/Bridlington via Hull to Doncaster and Sheffield, and between Hull and Selby/York. The village was recorded as simply 'Dyc' in 1234 and 'Dyke' in 1336; 'Gilberdyke' was first mentioned in 1349, and 'Gilbertdike' in 1376. Who 'Gilbert' refers to is unknown.In 1823, Gilberdyke was in the parish of Eastrington, the Wapentake of Holderness, and the Liberty of St Peter. Population, including the settlements of Hive and Sandholm[e], was 640. Occupations at the time included four farmers, two blacksmiths, two carpenters, a shoemaker, a corn miller, a constable, a schoolmaster, an overseer, and the licensed victualler of The Cross Keys public house.Current Asking Alexandria and We Are Harlot vocalist Danny Worsnop grew up here.

Bennetland is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 19 miles (31 km) west of Hull city centre and 5 miles (8 km) east of Howden town centre. It lies less than 1 mile (1.6 km) west from Gilberdyke, and is south of the M62 motorway and just to the south of the B1230 road. Bennetland lies between the Selby Line and the Hull and Doncaster Branch and is served by Gilberdyke railway station. The hamlet forms part of the civil parish of Gilberdyke.

Scalby is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 7 miles (11 km) west of Brough and 7 miles (11 km) north-east of Goole. It lies on the B1230 road.Historically in the wapentake of Howdenshire and the parish of Blacktoft, it now forms part of the civil parish of Gilberdyke, and is represented at Parliament as part of the Haltemprice and Howden Constituency. The name is from the same form as Scalby in North Yorkshire; Skalle-by, with Skalle being a personal name. Skalle is Old Norse and by means farm or farmstead.

It was opened in 1840 by the Hull and Selby Railway, and until 1974 it was known as Staddlethorpe station. Today it is operated by the Northern train operating company. Situated 17 miles (27 km) west of Hull, it is the junction for the lines to Selby and to Goole and Doncaster.

The River Foulness is a river in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Its name is derived from Old English fūle[n] ēa, meaning “dirty water”. Maintenance responsibilities for the river transferred from the Environment Agency to the Market Weighton Drainage Board on 1 October 2011. Market Weighton Drainage Board subsequently amalgamated with the Lower Ouse Internal Drainage Board on 1 April 2012 to create the Ouse and Humber Drainage Board. The river discharges into the Humber Estuary via Market Weighton Canal. Water levels within the river, its tributaries and the canal are managed and controlled by the Environment Agency. The river lies in an area known as the Humberhead Levels.

Royal Air Force Bellasize, also known as RAF Bellasize, was a former RAF airfield in the hamlet of Bellasize, near Gilberdyke, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Originally opened in 1916, Bellasize was one of only four Yorkshire-based RAF locations to see use in the First and Second World Wars. Flying at Bellasize was sporadic and training based, with the site not being used in an offensive capacity during the Second World War.

Wallingfen railway station was a station on the Hull and Barnsley Railway, and served the village of Newport in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The station opened on 27 July 1885 as Newport for goods traffic, and a week later it opened to passengers. It was renamed Newport (Yorks) in September 1921 and on 1 July 1923 to Wallingfen to avoid confusion with others stations titled Newport. It closed to passengers on 1 August 1955 and closed completely on 6 April 1959. The station has been demolished, and a section of the M62 motorway was built over the railway alignment in the 1970s.
