Saredon is a civil parish in South Staffordshire district, Staffordshire, England, situated to the north east of Wolverhampton, West Midlands, and to the south west of Cannock. Formed from two hamlets, Little and Great Saredon, this parish lies south of the A5 and is bisected by the busy M6. The Saredon Brook, a tributary of the Penk, formerly known as that river's Cannock Heath branch, links the hamlets. This brook provided the energy for two powerful corn mills at Saredon and Deepmore, and was also renowned for the large number of trout it held.There was also a windmill in the middle of Little Saredon, which remained in use until at least 1872, its working life thereafter being slightly prolonged through the use of a portable steam engine to drive the stones. In 1942, the remains of the sails were removed and the tower was converted into a house for the proprietor of Hawkins Tile Works in Cannock. Little Saredon's other noteworthy feature was the disproportionately large number of yew trees that used to grow there. Great Saredon has a Roman tumulus on high ground, a quarter mile distant from, and facing, the A5. The estimated population in 2004 was 739.

Hatherton Canal

The Hatherton Canal is a derelict branch of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal in south Staffordshire, England. It was constructed in two phases, the first section opening in 1841 and connecting the main line to Churchbridge, from where a tramway connected to the Great Wyrley coal mines. The second section was a joint venture with the Birmingham Canal Navigations, and linked Churchbridge to the Cannock Extension Canal by a flight of 13 locks, which were opened with the Extension Canal in 1863. The coal traffic was very profitable, and the canal remained in use until 1949. It was formally abandoned in 1955, after which the Churchbridge flight and much of the Extension Canal were destroyed by open cast mining. Plans for its restoration began in 1975 and the forerunner to the Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust was formed in 1989. Since then they have worked hard to protect and restore the canal, which was threatened by the route of the M6 Toll motorway. Negotiations eventually led to the provision of two culverts, one paid for by the Trust and the other by the road builders, which will be used in due course for the route of the re-aligned canal. In 2006, the engineers Arup produced a feasibility study for a replacement route for the destroyed section which would link to Grove Basin on the Cannock Extension Canal. Environmental concerns led to a second feasibility study being produced by Atkins in 2009, for a route which connected to the derelict Lord Hayes Branch on the Wyrley and Essington Canal. A short section near the junction with the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal is navigable, and the cost of restoring the rest and building the new route to the Wyrley and Essington was estimated at £44.1 million in 2009.

Cheslyn Hay is a former mining village and civil parish which is contiguous with Great Wyrley and Landywood in Staffordshire, England. It is situated within the South Staffordshire district some 3 miles south of Cannock, 7 miles north of Walsall, 8.5 miles northeast of Wolverhampton (the closest city) and 12.5 miles south of the county town of Stafford. The West Midlands county border lies 2 miles to the south. Station Street is the main street with some small shops. A major employer in the village is B.S. Eaton Ltd, a manufacturer of concrete products who operate a fleet of distinctive orange trucks. Another large employer is PP Control & Automation Ltd, a manufacturer of automation machinery. Landywood railway station, which opened in 1989, is the nearest station. Previously the village was served by Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay railway station which closed in 1965. Until 1 January 1916, the LNWR also operated a halt at nearby Landywood. Before World War II there was a cinema at the top of Rosemary Road, on the site much later occupied by Barts Motors. The housing stock has been grown significantly in each post-war decade, with suburban expansion into surrounding fields. The old Primary School was situated on the site bounded by Hatherton Street, Pinfold Lane, Hill Street and High Street. It was constructed circa 1883 and demolished in the 1990s and the land used for new housing. An additional modern building on the opposite side of Pinfold Lane was used for school meals and gym. The village is now served by two primary schools (Glenthorne Primary School and Cheslyn Hay Primary School) and by one secondary school, Cheslyn Hay Academy. The Hawkins family were a prominent family in the area in the 19th century. During the 19th century the area was known colloquially as the Wyrley Bank (in the local dialect Wyrley Bonk).
