Roanoke County, Virginia

Twelve O'clock Knob is a mountain located in southwestern Roanoke County, Virginia, directly south of Salem, Virginia. According to local lore, enslaved people in the western Roanoke Valley noted that the Sun was directly over the mountain roughly around noon local time. In 1995 and 1996, the Tour DuPont staged a time trial in the Roanoke Valley, the highlight of which was a ride over the steep, winding Twelve O'clock Knob Road. The north slope of the ridgeline formed by Poor Mountain, Twelve O'clock Knob and adjacent peaks such as Sugarloaf Mountain mark the southwestern boundary of the Roanoke Valley. This mountain should not be confused with Twelve O'Clock Knob in Patrick County, Virginia.

Preston House, also known as the John Cole House and Johns(t)on House, is a historic home located at Salem, Virginia. It was built about 1821, and is a two-story, five-bay, Federal style brick I-house dwelling. It features a single pile, central passage plan and original rear ell, its exterior end chimneys and decorative brick cornices.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, with a boundary amendment in 2006.

McVitty House, also known as the Inn at Burwell Place, is a historic home located at Salem, Virginia. It was built in 1906 and expanded with a substantial addition in 1925. It is a 2+1⁄2-story, L-shaped, Colonial Revival style frame dwelling. It features a full-length wrap-around porch with Tuscan columns, elaborate dormers, stunning fanlight windows and an attached sun/sleeping porch. The house is operated as a bed and breakfast.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

The Blair Apartments are a historic residential apartment complex at 231 Chestnut Street in Salem, Virginia. They consist of a series of seven connected buildings, forming a rough U shape on the west side of the street. They were built in 1949 with funding from the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), and are a well-preserved example of the types of buildings the FHA funded. Salem experienced a population boom in the years following World War II, prompting its construction.The complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.

Salem High School is a public high school in Salem, Virginia. It is the sole high school for the City of Salem public school system. Until 2022, Salem was an International Baccalaureate world school, certified for the Diploma Programme.

Salem is an independent city in the U.S. commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 25,346. It is the county seat of Roanoke County, although the two are separate jurisdictions. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Salem with Roanoke County, which surrounds both Salem and the neighboring City of Roanoke, for statistical purposes. Salem has its own courthouse and sheriff's office, but shares a jail with Roanoke County, which is located in the Roanoke County Courthouse complex in Salem. The Roanoke County Sheriff's Office and Roanoke County Department of Social Services are also located within Salem, though the county administrative offices are located in unincorporated Cave Spring. Roanoke College is located in the city. Salem is also the home to a minor league baseball team, the Salem Red Sox.

Academy Street School is a historic school complex located at Salem, Virginia. The complex consists of two buildings; the first built in 1890 and the annex about 1903. They are connected by a hyphen. The 1890 building is a two-story, three-bay, brick building with a projecting three-story tower and hipped roof. The 1903 annex building is a two-story, L-shaped brick building with a hipped roof and one-story frame porch.The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

Southwest Virginia Holiness Association Camp Meeting, also known as the Salem Camp Meeting, is a historic camp meeting complex located at Salem, Virginia. The complex consists of two buildings—a 1922 tabernacle and a dormitory, built about 1926. Both buildings are plainly detailed frame buildings with novelty weatherboard siding and poured concrete basement levels. The tabernacle measures approximately 60 feet by 80 feet and contains an auditorium designed for a capacity of 2,000 people. The dormitory is a two-story, three-bay, building with a full-width one-story porch.The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Salem Presbyterian Church is a historic Presbyterian church at E. Main and Market Streets in Salem, Virginia. It was built in 1851–1852, and is a Greek Revival style temple form church. It has a slightly projecting Ionic order portico in antis with belfry. The church owned the Salem Presbyterian Parsonage from 1854 to 1941.

Evans House is a historic home located at Salem, Virginia. It was built in 1882, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, L-shaped, French Empire style brick dwelling. It features two concavely cut intersecting mansard roofs which are pierced by two paneled interior chimneys with corbeled caps. The front facade is symmetrically divided by a two-story projecting central pavilion supported by a bracketed cornice and topped with a convexly rendered mansard roof.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Andrew Lewis Middle School is a former high school in Salem, Virginia, United States which was named after Andrew Lewis, an American pioneer, surveyor, and soldier from Virginia. He served as a colonel of militia during the French and Indian War, and as a brigadier general in the American Revolutionary War.
